《I want to live》ch. 14 Thief
Advertisement
“Hello sir, I was told that you had a problem.”
“Hi, you’re right. Somebody stole something very precious from me. I saw him while he was leaving my house. I followed the guy until he reached this building. I want to enter but I won’t be able to defeat a thieve.”
“I can help you.”
“I appreciate it a lot but I can’t pay you anything.”
“Don’t worry, I’ll do it for free.”
“Thanks, you’re my savior.”
I don’t really care about the reward, what I want is the thief’s possessions. I found this mission on the internet, it’s a fast mission. The only complicated part would be to kill the thief, He must be around level 54. It would be impossible with my level but, since I put all my points into strength, I should be able to deal considerable damage to him. The only problem is dexterity, I won’t be able to hit him, he’ll dodge all my attacks. The only reason why I’m doing this is because I have a theory.
I enter the building and start to look for him. The internet article said that I should be able to find some footprints that would take me to the thief. After walking for a while, I see something that resembles a footprint. It goes up to a closed room. I use Heavenlyhand and break the door as I charge inside.
“Hey, what are you doing here!?”
“You took something that is not yours.”
“Oh, so you’re here for this.”
He shows me a small wooden box.
“Yeah.”
“You can take it back, I thought it was something valuable but it is just some trash.”
I take the box from his hand and I put it in my pouch.
“Thanks, that helps a lot.”
I try to show my gratitude so extend my hand to him and we shake hands. Before the handshake ends, I hold his hand tightly and I bring him to me. I use my other hand to bring him to the ground. I kneel on him and use my hands to suffocate him. He fights to get out of my hands but he slowly loses strength.
“You’ve killed a human with a level far higher than you, 46,800XP, you’ve obtained the [Against the impossible] ability”
“Level up”, “level up”, “level up”.
Passive ability
Against the impossible(novice): (?%)
(When fighting in a disadvantageous position, you get a 50% increase in all stats.)
What!? If I’m not wrong. This is a legendary ability. Legendary abilities are the only ones that show the mastery level but not the percent. That also means that, since it’s legendary, I’m the only one with this ability.

I feel like I cheated doing the handshake thing. The reason why artificial dodge didn’t get activated was because I was grabbing his hand. Artificial dodge only works on these conditions:
-There is a possible way to dodge.
-Nothing is holding you.
-The system detects that an attack is going to hit you.
-You have a higher dexterity than the attacker.
-Artificial dodge works on probabilities. The higher the disparity between dexterity, the higher the chance of it activating.
It didn’t activate for 2 reasons. First, I did a hand shake not an attack so it didn’t trigger. Second, When I attacked him, I was tightly grabbing him.
There’s nothing more. Since I had the strength, I just had to prevent the artificial dodge to trigger.
The thief dropped a ring, a pair of gloves and a lot of money. When I found this mission on the internet, everybody advised to kill the thief. It is the only way to get some reward out of this.
Gold ring of a nameless thief (rare)
(When fighting someone, yours and his dexterity becomes 0)
Gloves of a nameless thief (rare)
(Dodging without the artificial dodge system increases your higher stat by 10% for 5 seconds)
When I saw these two objects, I knew I had to obtain them. They aren’t very useful to the average player, but for me, they are extremely useful. The average player would hate the dexterity effect too. Monsters normally have low dexterity, so it is detrimental to the majority of players. They don’t even have boosts to stats, a normal rare object has from 1 to 3 boosts with up to a +5 in any stat.
The average player would not dodge without the artificial dodge system too. Dodging by yourself is very hard, I can dodge attacks because I can see their movements in their hearts. The only problem I have now is that I can’t see the heart of any monster or NPC, so the only way to dodge them reliably is to use Skywalk. I think that with enough training, I’ll be able to see their hearts too, but I’m not sure.
I have to return the box now. I take a look inside. There is a little straw doll. Why is this doll so important to him? Well, I'll just return it.
I go out of the building and find the man waiting outside.
“Hey sir, is this it?”
“Yeah!! Did you defeat the thief?”
“Yes.”
“I’m so grateful, I said I wasn’t going to give you anything but I’ll get something for you.”

“Don’t worry sir, if you want to reward me, just tell me why that doll is so important for you.”
“Well, it used to belong to my daughter, she passed away. 5 Years ago, I had a family and a good job. I had the most beautiful daughter you could have ever seen. She was my pride. One day, when I was going home. I saw a lot of smoke; I ran home jut to find all my house in flames. My wife was shouting my daughter's name. She was in the second floor and couldn’t get out. I called her too and I heard her last words. “Take care of Lux”, she threw her doll through the window. We gave her this doll when she was born, she used to bring the doll everywhere. She always called the doll “Lux”. Now that my wife left me, and I was fired. This doll is the only thing I have.”
“Thanks for telling me.”
I gave him a pat in the shoulder. The world is unfair sometimes. I left the place.
There are two more things in my plans, getting better equipment and the cook subclass.
…
I’m at the top of a mountain. I climbed for an hour. An entrance to a cave is in front of me. There are two monsters guarding the entrance. they are a mix between a human and a reptile. They have silver armor and a spear. I approach them.
“Hey human, what are you doing in the green lizards territory.”
“I just want some armor.”
“Sorry but we don’t sell armor to strangers.”
“Don’t worry, I won’t buy anything.”
I approach the guards using Skywalk and Wolf leap. They try to attack me with their spears but I dodge them. I use Heavenlyhand on one of the guards and it opens a hole in his stomach. The other guard thrusts again, I can’t dodge it completely and it cuts part of my left arm. I use Stonekick and he gets thrown away and crashes into the entrance without any sign of life. They turn into white particles and I grab the drops.
They just dropped some coins and a piece of armor; this armor is the one I’m looking for. I’ll wait until other guards come out and I’ll kill them until I get all the pieces of this armor. I could enter the cave but I want to have time to heal and I don’t know if I can deal with the guard's quantity inside.
…
After some hours I got the last piece of armor and a lot of duplicates. Now my status looks like this.

The Laptop Hero (Portal/Isekai LitRPG)
[participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge] - April 2022 Silas got summoned to another world—by a group of kids attending magic school who seemed rather unhappy with the results of their ritual. After a brief glimpse of his summoners Silas woke in the town dump. Unable to speak the local language, a misunderstanding escalated and before long Silas wound up in a jail cell, the locals having confiscated all his worldly possessions aside from his laptop, which had formed some strange bond with him. Now he can summon his laptop at will, and he can view his Status, level up, and gain powerful skills and magic as if he were some character in a video game, which is great and everything, but all Silas really wants to do is sit in a dark room and play games on his laptop. Only, life isn't a game, and Silas needs to get his act together because everyone else is playing for keeps. Or does he? Maybe for Silas life is just one big game now, with everyone else stuck playing by his rules. Assorted Disclaimers, in no particular order: I am only posting this on RoyalRoad.com, so if you find my story elsewhere it was not posted by me. Please do let me know! While I do consider this a progression fantasy, and have tagged it as such, Silas's Status improvements will not necessarily proceed in a linear fashion. His RPG stats will have ups and downs, exploits and nerfs, periods of growth and stagnation. Such is the life of a gamer, to be held under the thumb of the all powerful devs, or in this case a certain goddess devoted to the idea of Balance. SIlas himself should learn and grow, improving and progressing in areas where he struggles, or rather, to show such is my goal. The story is told from multiple points of view. While other PoVs will come and go, Silas shall remain the only lead character. The world Silas finds himself on is not a nice place. Expect him to encounter gore and traumatizing content and bad people who do bad things for selfish (or possibly noble) reasons from time to time. Some characters will use profanity, however due to cultural differences the curse words used will differ from those used in our corner of reality, so I'm not including the profanity content warning. Silas himself isn't one for foul language. No explicit sexual content here. This novel is intended for mature readers, however, and will include mature topics, including, but not limited to, sex, violence, death, and taxes. No harem. Might be an eventual romantic interest, possibly even some competitive jealousy, yet as his story begins Silas is too overwhelmed with other concerns to consider long term plans. Musophobics might want to steer clear of this story. Same goes for turophobics. You have been warned. Keep in mind, however, if my other disclaimers didn't make this clear, I only have the faintest of outlines at the moment. This story will take me where it will. My goal with this story is to write it to the end, something of a long-term writing exercise, with the hope others might take an interest in my work and encourage me to keep at it. I've started a number of works before, even finished a few, but this is the first time I've shared any work in a public forum. My temporary cover was made by me, in GIMP using public domain images. If you can do better I'll happily accept your submission and give credit for your work here!

Madness Led by the Hands
‘Great, no… splendid. It was for naught.’ ‘Naught? Depends. If your desire is to send an army of killers our family’s way, yes indeed. If it’s plain survival you seek, then no.’ ‘They don’t coexist?’ ‘What… don’t tell me you’re still all groggy from the fall. Perhaps in novels, but real life is much tougher–––many more times a drag than anyone can possibly imagine. If dusty history is not a reliable teacher for you, then the pandemic surely took that place. At least that one has the advantage you needn’t be literate to savvy how reality always trumps imagination.’ ‘Whatever you say, whatever you say. So… what now?’ ‘Now? Isn’t it obvious? Now we shall survive. And live a good life.’ ‘Ohh… pretty much everything here has something against this little weird wish of ours. Might you consider?’ ‘Then pretty much everything here is a goner.’ ‘Hm, I don’t like the sound of that. Too much trouble, you see. I’d prefer laying low somewhere safe.’ ‘…nobody told you it’s mutually exclusive, no–––or did you forget about that too?’ ‘Fine, then I wish my future enemies all the best.’ ‘They are undeserving of your pity.’ ‘Of course not. That unlucky bunch won’t ever comprehend the reason behind their demise. Just let me smoke in peace and offer my condolence in advance.’ ‘Idem, let me study alchemy, unobstructed by all, if possible. This also includes you. By the way, are you sure you smoke to offer condolences? It seems like an excuse to me.’ ‘I-it is none. Plain truth, you see?’ ‘Seriously, why did I even ask...?’
