《From beyond The Veil》Chapter 7 - The monsters

Mate with her, mate that boring legless freak? No way, absolutely no way. A mere peasant can't be enough for the pumpkin king. However, my thoughts betrayed me as the image of her smiling face came into my mind.

This was agitating! Just because she has good taste and a pretty face doesn't- Did I just admit she was pretty!? Ugh! Don't forget what happened. Don't let some harlot lure you in again. Your Alister, king of the pumpkin patch! You don't need some useless, legless human!

I growled and snapped my fingers. I could hear a loud pop as a car down the road past me. The front left tire exploded and the car started swerving down the street.

"Mow"

I heard the happy chirp of Loki from the left side of me. I looked over and I could see a flash of purple light coming. Then the gentle familiar paws of my cat on my shoulder.

"Oh, Prince Loki. I was wondering when you'd hop back into this dimension." I hummed as I lifted up a finger and gently rubbed under his warm furry chin.

Loki was a black cat. I don't quite know where he's from. He just showed up at my patch one day. I liked the look in his purple eyes, so I kept him. However, I let him do what he wants. He vanishes often. Sometimes for days, even weeks. But he always comes back. Just as I was about to relax, I realized I didn't hear any crash yet. I turned to look back down the road. And I could see the car in the distance, driving like nothing happened. Huh, human cars must be more efficient than I thought. I wonder if that has anything to do with the geese they put in them…

"The human world is strange Loki. This Blair girl said she loved me. What the heck is with that?" I looked over to Loki and he just nuzzled my cheek.

I smiled slightly and sighed.

"You're just as strange as her I suppose, liking monsters. She has to want something from me Loki. But I can't figure out what it is. She's human, she can't understand the value of my status. Plus she manipulated me. She used my ignorance of the human world to get my attention. Then she attacked me with the L word. I'm sure she knew my weak mental state. But why, I don't buy this love crap."

Then I felt Loki bit onto my hair and yank me to the right.

"Ah! The hell Loki!" I yelped.

Then I stopped thinking. I stared in surprise as Loki had my face turned toward a store called peas in a pod gaming.

"What? You trying to say she thinks this is a game?"

Then I felt the weight of Loki disappear, and he reappeared on top of the word peas, then he leaped over to the word pod.

"Were two peas in a pod?" I asked as he vanished.

I felt the warm fur of Loki happily brushing against my cheek again. He meowed happily and I turned from the place.

"Ya know, sometimes I have no idea what you're talking about. But I'll agree we do have a lot in common. But still, that fear of hers. It makes me uncomfortable…"

Flashes of the day came into my mind. The busted open pumpkins, the laughter. The devilish smirk that rivaled my own beaming down on me.

"I'm not gonna fall for something like that again. Even if she's pretty. So don't get your hopes up Loki."

I turned and gave him a stern look. Which he promptly responded by licking my nose.

"You're totally gonna snuggle up to her huh?"

He just mewed again.

"Traitor," I grumbled.

“Alister.”

I heard the low growl of a familiar voice coming from behind me. You’ve gotta be kidding me...

“And if it isn’t dog breath.” I huffed. “What the hell are you doing here?”

“I could ask you the same thing.” He sighed. “I heard about yesterday's incident.”

“So what?” I asked as I turned toward him.

I could see he had his contacts in. Which were modified awhile ago so my illusions don’t work. It doesn't allow me to make full eye contact. Totally lame. Then again, beasts' fear stop being fun a long time ago.

“Do you understand the situation we're in here?”

“I don’t really care if I’m being honest.”

“You realize cameras aren’t the only way to give away our position right!? One loud noise and our pray will be let loose.”

“Well, why don’t you come to school and keep an eye on me then, if you're so concerned? Oh yeah that’s right! Because a monster like you shouldn’t even be let outside of its cage!”

He glared at me and I smirked.

“Oh? Did I hit a nerve? Why isn’t the little puppy with his master? Last I checked you weren’t allowed out of your cage alone. Or is it that Reaper doesn't even know that you're here right now?” I teased.

“None of that is your concern.”

“Maybe I should give Reaper a call? Let Em know his little Eugene has hopped the fence.”

I slowly strolled over to him, and I could smell it. That prime whiff of fear coming off him. I saw a lady jogging and I snapped my fingers three times. A street light from behind us started to creak and shake. Quickly snapping and falling toward the woman. I smirked more as I could smell the imminent fear from Beast grow as his elf ears twitch to the sound.

He quickly took off his flannel as panic had officially set in. The shirt wiggled in his palms right before he threw it. Quickly forming wings and soaring past me to the woman.

“What are you-”

I walked to his side and rested my hand on his shoulder.

“Listen here you freak. Just because everyone back home is scared of you doesn't mean I am. So next time you feel like running away from your master. Just remember there are other beasts you should be afraid of.” I looked him in the eye, and he looked back into mine.

I flared my eyes for him and curled my lips into a twisted smile.

“I am the pumpkin king after all,” I said as I walked past him.

I heard the poll drop behind me and the woman screams. I sniffed the air and sighed happily. Ah, fresh fear. There was nothing better. Loki suddenly vanished from me, wonder where he was going. Just as I closed my eyes to continue my stroll, I heard a loud thud behind me.

I quickly opened my eyes and it was only a blur. Then it was excruciating pain! It was like a cannon blasted itself into my stomach. I was sent flying back and slammed into the concrete wall of the peas in a pod place. I coughed desperately as I tried to catch my breath. It burned, my insides just burned! I slowly looked up and I could see Beast, and he came back in and gave me a right hook that knocked me to the ground. It was like the world was spinning.

“Pathetic, the pumpkin king on the ground with two punches. Your father wouldn’t have been beaten so easily. He at least could put up a fight.”

“Sh-hut up,” I grumbled.

I raised my hand to snap, but Beast just stomped on my hand.

“You seem to misunderstand. I’m not the one on the leash, you are. And I’ll yank that chain back every time I need to.” He kneeled down to me, glaring intensely into my eyes. “Your sister is as good as dead if you're all she has.”

I felt my heart skip a beat as he said that. It was happening again. It was just like that day at the patch. I sat up and growled, glaring back into his eyes.

“I am strong enough! I became a monster!” I roared.

Beast quickly punched me in the face, and my head bounced on the concrete.

“If you can’t even beat me, how do you expect to beat the Doctor? Alister, you're pathetic.”

Beast slowly stood up as the sound of sirens could be heard in the distance. Someone must have called the humans guardians on us. Beast quickly leaned down and threw me on his shoulder, which was a whole new wave of pain on its own. It was like riding a rollercoaster on his back as he zoomed off. There I was being held down by Eugene again. Beaten and bloody just like that day. I was supposed to become the devil, the monster everyone would fear! But everywhere I turn, It’s like I did it for nothing! I killed them so I could become stronger! I forsaked my mom's dying wish for this!

Suddenly Beast dropped me down on the ground. I felt the grass below, and I could hear the birds chirping around us. Must be the woods.

“Next time you do something stupid that might jeopardize the Blairs or our mission. I’ll kill you. So you better get your head on straight.” Beast grunted as he started to walk away.

How!? How is he so strong? How is he so powerful? Why does everyone fear his name and not mine!?

“Tell me! Tell me how!”

Beast stopped walking and he turned toward me.

“What?”

“How did you become the monster everyone fears!?”

Beast turned completely around now and looked me over, a sympathetic look in his eye.

“I didn’t become a monster, I was born one.”

He said as he slowly turned away from me, then he started to walk off.

“You and I are a lot alike. But we both live in two different worlds. Don’t try to become something you’re not.”
