《RITE OF PASSAGE》2. RAVEN

Emptiness. Void. A pitch black nothingness greeted me, when I recovered consciousness.
Suspended in this void I knew I was not alone, as I felt other presences near me. But before I could figure out anything else, I felt something huge looking at me.
It's gaze laid me bare, as if it could see through everything. All my secrets, my lies, my truths and untruths. As though, all my thoughts were an open book to it. It's mere presence suffocated me, made me feel small and insignificant.
But just before I was going to pass out again, it withdrew it's gaze. As I panted heavily, trying to regain my breath, a sudden flash of dazzling light hit me, nearly blinding me in the process.
After the light faded away, I saw that there was a magnificent white tree floating at the centre of the pitch black void. It rose so high that, I could neither see it's beginning not it's end. Its branches held innumerable shiny leaves and crystalline flowers. Among this ethereal foliage dangled four perfectly shaped silver apples.
I saw mesmerized, as the silver apples dropped from the tree one by one. One of them started to roll towards me, across the void.
As soon as the silver apples fell, the white tree had started withering, as if aging thousands of years, in but a brief moment.
By the time the apple came to a rest before me, the tree had become a withered husk of its former self. A twisted caricature of its earlier beauty, with its shrunken limbs and rotten leaves.
And as the apple touched me, I felt a warmth spread throughout my body. My vision was blurring, and enveloped in the warmth as I lost consciousness, the last thing I saw was the tree crumbling into motes of golden dust.

When I came to again, there was no white tree or dark void before me, instead I seemed to be in a luxurious chamber.
I was lying on a huge four–poster bed, grey morning light filtering in through the ornate bed hangings which had dancing golden lions and prancing silver bucks embroidered on them.
As disoriented as I felt with the bizarre nature of events that had befallen me I was even more anxious about the present situation. Had I somehow survived being shot in the chest? If so, where was I? In some weird luxury hospital suite? Then where was my family? Or nurses and doctors? Or medical equipment of some sort? Or had I actually died and this was the afterlife? Heaven or Hell or what ever else that comes after death. I had no idea what was happening to me and that frightened me more than anything ever had.
As I tried to extract my right arm from under the covers, I noticed that it felt extremely bony. How long was I out, for my physique to deteriorate so much, I wondered. But as I saw my arm in the pale light of dawn, I was rendered speechless.
For what I saw was, a fleshless, bloodless, skeleton arm of pearly white bone.

The Depths of Magic
Synopsis It's the year 2052 and the release of the new next-generation full-dive VRMMO game called The Depths of Magic is hitting the world by storm. The game's technology will surpass all other games before it and shock the masses. Hector who goes by the name Locke inside the game is an experienced player of the genre. He is looking to continue his goal of enjoying gaming as well as the competition that goes along with competing for the top ranking spots. Novel Summary The Depths of Magic is a LitRPG novel focused on a Fantasy VRMMO setting. This is not a harem novel. In-Game systems The Depths of Magic features state-of-the-art technology never before seen in Hector's world. The key system the novel will bring up often is the Second Brain. The Second Brain system is more like a guidance AI for the players in the game that acts as if you had a second brain assisting your every action. How much guidance this AI will give is based on its experience or mastery skills a player will receive in the game. The guidance is seamless to a point where a player won't even realize they are being assisted, it's will feel like what they are doing is something they could always do. However, once they leave the game it will become quite apparent that they were receiving heavy guidance. The purpose of this system in a writing sense is to explain why a player can realistically become more powerful, more agile, or more skilled than they would otherwise be able to as a human. To give an example if someone could move faster than a bullet, how would a normal human brain be able to perceive and control this movement properly. Or how could a player who has never held a sword before become as experienced as someone who has trained with the sword all their lives? The magic system will be another focus of this novel. I don't want to spoil anything here but it should be an interesting one. The hope is that the system I have made will spark discussion between the readers on what combinations will do what. I already have most of it, but it will be fun to read as the author. Side notes My general focus for this novel is to attempt to make the in-game systems make sense. To give a vague example I have read a lot of novels of this genre and some have the habit of just creating such powerful items that it just breaks the system, and somehow the MC keeps finding challenging situations even with those items. What tends to happen when I read a novel like this I just ignore the stats of the items he is getting because the numbers don't even matter anymore. Release schedule: The chapter release schedule due to real-life complications is to release as I write them. Patreon setup: 1 chapter early release/discord access. Free content up to the current chapter includes an excel sheet that contains Locke's current stats at the end of the chapter. This is extra information for those that are interested.

The branch of humanity on earth was merely part of an old, thought to be extinct bloodline. The Warden had sought to use this bloodline for his own purposes as part of the Great Game, a fully immersive virtual reality world that was created by an unknown entity billions of years in the past. The Great Game was now populated by players from millions of different civilisations across countless galaxies. Braizo is forced into the Great Game by an old enemy in an attempt to kill him, but instead of dying Braizo receives a special ability that is both a curse and a blessing. So begins his adventures in the Great Game.

... And My Skillet
A long time ago, a child was born under the great blue sky. Many a Dwarf grumbled at the auspicious event, tugging furtively at their beards at this ill omen. A year later as the expedition had begun digging into the virgin hills of their new home, the grumbling of the doughty mountain people rose to a disbelieving furor when the yearling passed over the ritual offerings that would determine his lot in life. Instead, the as of yet unnamed child crawled over to a skillet fresh out of the fire and begun picking at the rock bread, unconcerned with the heat. Shouts turned into laughter, frowns lifted into craggy smiles. Upon placing a handful of the bread into his mouth, the infant’s face grew so grim and stony not even the eldest of the present Dwarves could match him. There was a durable ore within this babe, of that the Lore Keeper was sure. Yumly Ironhand was thus named, the beginning of his great tale immortalized on the rune walls of his clan’s history. “It’s pronounced Yoom Lee and no, rock bread isn’t a misnomer.”
