《Numb》Chapter 3 - Jazzy

Jazzy finished school for the day. With a gray beanie on her head, Jazzy glared at her laptop. I hate online classes. Three homework yesterday and today, I have four new assignments. Can you believe that? Not to mention those never-ending projects, all these are way too much for any student. It’s getting ridiculous. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath.
Relax now. Just think about that delicious lunch you had earlier. Hmm. So yummy. A little smile crept across her face. Maybe I’ll have the same thing for tonight. Yeah! I better call Rocky later. Anyway, I cannot blame my teachers. Remember, it’s business. That must be it. Because of the pandemic, I assume that my school cut costs by hiring fewer teachers this school year. Students to teacher ratio are probably at its highest. Pandemic or no pandemic, private schools are in it to make money. And that’s the bottom line.
A telephone ring snapped her train of thought.
“Hello? Yes, ooh... okay. I’m on my way down. Yippee!” Jazzy threw her hands in the air and stormed out of their condominium unit.
SWOOSH! Jazzy jumped down from the stairs. THUD!
She checked her time. “55 seconds from the 6th floor. Yes!” Jazzy pumped her fist. “That’s my new world record.” She bowed to the imaginary crowd cheering for her incredible achievement. “Thank you, thank you. You are so kind.”
“Hello, Jazzy.” The dayshift guard chuckled while pointing to the lobby. “Your package is waiting.”
“Hee-hee. Thanks, Danny.” She approached the lobby area.
“Please sign here,” the courier said before giving her the box.
“Package for Miss Jasmine Lopez?” another man asked.
Jazzy pointed to herself. “Me, me, me.”
“Hooray!” She yelled after receiving her second box.

“Hey, Jazzy. Can you manage, or do you still need some help?” Danny asked.
“Don’t worry. I got this.” She placed her chin on top of the first package, securing both boxes before entering the elevator. “A little help here, Danny. Can you kindly press 6 for me?”
“No problem, Jazzy,” Danny replied with a smile.
The elevator door closed.

Rushing inside, Jazzy placed the two boxes on the dining table. She read the first package. Hmm. From Raquel Lopez. Ah, you shouldn’t have. Nah, of course, you should.
“Yippee!” Jazzy threw her hands in the air. “Baseball stuff from Rocky.”
Removing her beanie, she wore the new red cap while placing the baseball uniform over her chest. “Whoa! I make this look good,” Jazzy said, striking a pose in front of the mirror.
She read the second package. Huh? From Jazzy Lopez? That’s weird. It must be a typo. Hmm. And there’s no return address. Opening the second box, Jazzy found a stuffed toy inside. “What is this?” She picked it up. “Ugh! It’s so heavy. Maybe 10 pounds? Nah, it’s more like 20.”
She examined her gift, pulling it closer to her face. This toy is so realistic. It looks like a real fawn French bulldog. Aww. Look at him. He—is—so—cute.
Jazzy kissed her new toy, then it moved. Her eyes widened. Whoa! It’s alive? No way! She cuddled the puppy as it continued to wiggle. “Are you alright, cutie pie?” Jazzy shook her head in disbelief. “I didn’t even know that you can send animals through the parcel. Talk about animal cruelty.”
The fawn French bulldog snuggled closer to her. “Hee-hee. You are so sweet. Hey! Cut it out. I’m ticklish. Wait a minute. What do I name you?”
RULF! The puppy barked, wagging his tail.
“Ralph? That’s not a bad name,” she said, nodding. “Do you like it if I call you Ralph?”
RULF! The puppy barked again, bobbing his head.
“Okay. So, Ralph, it is.”

The Madec Legacy
The dawn of Emotion Based A.I.s is here, John is the fifth test subject to have an AI implemented in his brain, and so far the first one to survive. Blinded by the dream of immortality, the researchers push the tests to inhumane standards. John is obligated to take part in sessions of torture designed to test the limits of the AI influence over the physical and mental health. What was supposed to be a new beginning in life turns into living hell. An (un)lucky twist ends his life. John then reincarnates with his AI in a new world where a System influences the interaction between Magic and Matter. With seemingly limitless potential and a game-like system influencing the world, the hero sets on his journey. --AUTHOR NOTE, PLEASE READ-- I will state here my promises to you, potential reader: 1. No harem! I don't trust myself to make a harem feel natural or healthy, I never met any person who has a personality that can adapt and live in a harem for reasons that are not monetary, so I can't draw inspiration from real life. Sorry!; 2. The enemies will not be bland and illogically mean. Some may feel like that at first, but I will take great care in fleshing them out, trust me. You may end up hating some, but you won't be able to deny that they had their reasons for what they did; 3. I am using a paid (and expensive) automated editor tool, and I take longer to write because I take my time in editing the stuff. I am aiming to improve and I will not shy away from constructive criticism, nor take offense for no reason; 4. Characters will die and will suffer, some will get over the tragedies and improve, others will not be as resilient. 5. This novel has a lot of ground to cover, it is neither a short story, a manual on crafting, or the script of some action scene. There will be both time skips and oversimplifications of some actions for the sake of moving the story forward. Time skips will be more prominent in the first 30 chapters. I will describe crafting processes and fights with more detail if they are essential for the chapter; 6. If I took my time describing something, it's because it is important. I hate novels that waste time describing useless stuff. If you skim over something, the chances are that something in the future will not make sense. I am an adept of "Chekhov's gun" principle; 7. I already have 31k words on my auxiliary documents, I have a plan for the story, and I will not be making changes even if someone ends up noticing some foreshadowing and figures out what will happen. The story comes first. 8. I have a wife, a job that demands 9h every day and courses related to my job (lawyer) three days of the week, it's unlikely that I will be able to do mass releases at all. I will have a healthy amount of chapters to be able to post at least 1 chapter every day continually. Don't worry. 9. I will read all the comments. I will listen to all you have to say and will try my best to accommodate demands as long as they do not hamper the path I prepared. 10. There is an arc that spans the entire novel. Each volume will be an arc in itself while progressing a little bit of the main arc. Every arc will have one or more main antagonists. I think that's it! Thank you for reading it all. Have an awesome time reading my first novel!!

Fade
The story follows the life of John Grimshaw. From tragic beginnings to hopeful ends, John embarks on a quest for meaning. When visiting the cemetery he meets a girl named Jennifer Stone, a youthful teenager who quickly becomes a safety raft for John in turbulent times. But nothing could have prepared John for when he met the man in the pinstripe suit. The man with bright eyes, dark skin, and gleaming white teeth. The man claiming to the impossible and break the thin ice below John's feet entirely. (ADDITIONAL DISCLAIMER) This story starts off relatively dark. Those who dislike subject material surrounding loss, depression, grief, should probably not read. With that said, the story evolves into a supernatural thriller past the initial chapters. It’s a comparably low fantasy for a website like this but hope some of you still enjoy it.
