《Chaos Sequence》Chapter 20: Same goal, new approach

"You worried about the others, Private Mirabelle?" Savage turned to Mirabelle who was vacantly staring at a wall. "Cause I'm not, not at all!"
They were in the medical room of their base grabbing any materials that they can get their hands on and bringing them to a large table in the center of the room.
"I think that's enough Private Mirabelle." The droid suddenly came to a halt.
"Hm, you did good work yesterday Private, so I was thinking of giving you a promotion to Private First Class!" Savage took a brief pause. "Eh that's a mouthful so I'm just going to put you up to Corporal." She planned on promoting Reaper up to Corporal as well and, most likely, leave Dealer as is.
Mirabelle was still frozen in place but that didn't matter, everything that Savage needed was now on the table. Her newest plan involved infiltrating the UCNA militia using a disguise and then strike at them from the inside. To put this plan in motion they had to first make a disguise, also having Guard back would be pretty helpful so she hoped that the search team succeeds.
Sewing was no problem for Savage, she had a lot of practice over the years because she had to repair her own clothes and belongings. Even when compared to Sweeper, who used to work as a maid and is well-verse in the art of sewing, Savage would come out on top. What she needed was a needle, some threads and the right coloured cloths to create something similar to what the enemy wore.
It was a shame that they didn't have a sewing machine but they had to make do with what they had. Savage worked diligently cutting cloth and threading threads while Mirabelle continued to do her statue performance.
"Corporal Mirabelle can you pass that brown shirt?" It was located at the far edge of the table and Savage was focused on measuring the piece of cloth she had cut.
Mirabelle slowly stomped her way towards the shirt and picked it up. "Target has been acquired." She made her way back to her Captain and dropped the shirt directly in front of her.
There was much work to be done in order to defeat the UCNA soldiers and their new found might, the enemy was in a position where they could attack them at anytime. Logically, for Savage, this means that they must attack first.

Savage checked the clock hanging above a cabinet, it was 8:48 AM. The search party had been out for over 10 hours now, she wasn't worried as she knew that Sweeper and Reaper would get the job done. She continued constructing the disguises.
"Corporal Mirabelle, what do you think of the team?" Savage asked, hoping to past the time with a chat.
"What are your orders?" Her lips remained tightly stuck together as she replied perfectly in a monotone voice.
"Your mouth, you forgot to move your mouth when you said that..."
"What are your orders?" Without missing a beat she replied again but this time her lips attempted to make out the words, they were still a second off of the voice, it looked like an amateur puppeteer was trying to speak through her.
"That's better!" With a smile, Savage continued her work.
It has been a while since she really got to do any actual sewing, a wave of nostalgia washed over her as she remembered when she first stepped out onto the battlefield 8 years ago. She had been struck by a direct hit from an electric gun which seared away parts of her uniform, her own injuries were minimal due to the durability of the Savage android type which main purpose is to get up close and personal. A fellow squadmate saw the damage and decided to repair her uniform, impressed by the skill shown, Savage asked (begged) them to teach her.
She let out a small sigh. "8 years..." She had only fought in small conflicts, such as destroying bandit camps and fighting off terrorists, so when she heard of the North American War breaking out in 2120 she was excited to fight for her country. It's been almost 12 months into the war now and there doesn't seem to be an end in sight.
"There we go!" Savage lifted up a small robe that closely resembles the militia's outfit. "All I need to do is make the bottom longer and add in some decorative features and it will be a perfect copy!" She showed off her creation to Mirabelle who blankly stared at it.
"Just need to make one or two more afterwards, the search team should be returning soon."
"Are we lost? I think we're lost..."
Somewhere further away from the US base, a single vehicle is slowly making its way southwards, Sweeper had asked Dealer if they were headed in the right direction for about an hour now.

"Quit it! I'm trying my best here..." Dealer had stayed up all night driving around trying to track the kidnappers. "We're lucky this thing has so much mileage."
"It's been putting in a lot of work." Reaper patted the dashboard.
Dealer and Reaper were sitting in the front while Sweeper had the back all to herself. Lying down on the backseat of a car wasn't as comfortable as Sweeper thought it would be, especially for 10 hours.
"Are we even following the trail anymore?" Sweeper asked much to the annoyance of Dealer.
"There is no trail, I said that a couple of hours ago when you decided to take a nap, there hasn't been a trail for a few freaking miles now!" Dealer angrily looked out the side window, the sun was now shining in the sky so she no longer had to drive in the dark.
Dealer had been up and down and all around but there was no trace of Guard or her kidnappers. She had even driven close to the UCNA base but spotted nothing of interests. For all she knows they could have left Former North Dakota by now.
"You've been up all night?" Sweeper asked.
"Y-yeah."
"Sorry... I thought we all agreed to take a break, I didn't mean to get on your case."
"Well I just thought we would be home faster if we found Guard right away. Also it isn't that big of a deal, I worked graveyard shift at my job."
"What made you want to join the army?" Sweeper's question caught Dealer by surprise that the jeep ran out of control for a split second.
"Huh? Why'd you want to know?" Dealer, after regaining control of the wheel, responded.
"I was just wondering why someone like you would enlist in the army. Were you forced into it?"
"Forced? Nah, the old man that owns the store wouldn't do anything underhanded like signing me up before asking and then going 'But I already told them you've enlisted!' or something like that."
"Then... why did you join?"
"I... I thought I would be able to freely carry a gun around." Dealer forced a smile as she looked away and stared at the large river they were driving nearby.
"That's it? Is that really it?" Sweeper gazed sharply into the back of Dealer's head, who didn't know how to respond so she did a little shrug. "You would risk your own life on the battlefield just so you can whip a gun around?"
"Hey! To be fair, I thought we would just be doing patrols and stuff, not actual combat! I didn't ask to be on the frontlines..." Dealer sulked.
"My respect for you has went down again..."
"Oh yeah? What about you then? Why did you sign up? You had a pretty cozy life living in some rich guy's mansion. I can't think of a single reason why you would join the army." Dealer snapped back.
"Me? Well, why else then to protect my country." Sweeper quickly replied.
"Really... that's boring. I thought it would be because you're secretly in to murdering people."
"W-what are you implying?" Sweeper almost jumped up. "Is that how you really think of me?"
"Nope, just wanted to get that reaction. And besides Reaper's the one that's secretly in to murdering people." She smiled at Reaper.
"I am?" Reaper looked at her in confusion which caused Dealer to giggle.
"Stop messing around Dealer and focus on driving." Sweeper threw a crumpled up piece of paper at Dealer's head before turning her attention to Reaper. "You're a combat android so you probably had less of a say in it than us, right?"
"From the moment I'm created I'm expected to fight for my country." Reaper said as if she was reading it off a cue card.
"I guess so..." Dealer kept her eyes on the path ahead, still no sign of anything. She'd just been aimlessly driving around for the past few hours in hopes that something might happen.
"Hey!" Reaper suddenly grabbed onto Dealer's arm and pointed in a direction. "I see tire tracks over there!"
Dealer stopped the car and stared in the direction that Reaper pointed in, there was a faded trail leading into a large forest. This was the sign. "Okay ladies, I'm going to drop us nearby and we'll head in on foot. Get ready."

Vast Asleep
The story of Kingard the Binder in the aftermath of Broken This short story is the epilogue of Broken, the second book of the Chronicles of Mother's Gate series. It’s a great follow-up to the novel, a bonus story that adds extra layers but is set apart from the full-length narrative. Vast Asleep follows the story of Kingard, who finds himself caught in a world called Mother's realm, bathed in glowing light but strangely stuck in place. He encounters his greatson Varyan there, and learns that his experiences are likely dreams. As he grows more accustomed to the loving realm around him, Kingard remembers fear and trepidation about the face of the world, and he loses contact with his companion. This story answers the question, Is Kingard really dead? with a tentative no, and new mysteries brewing. It also raises the question, What's happening while he's awake? and includes an excerpt from the sister story Ride Awake, about Kingard's situation with the Colkh'rak. Praise for Tales of the Known World Bookends: Loved it. The difference between the two stories is great! The difference between the epilogue and prologue is astounding. So much light and love in the first story. You feel safe reading it. Healing. The second, so much darkness, pain and despair. The choice of vocabulary is awesome and makes an impact. And this set of short stories ties the two books together so well. -- Dana V. of Texas ★★★★★
