《Dynamic Force》Chapter 15- Due Diligence

It was only an hour until the meeting Scott had set up with Ewan Buckner. Ewan moved briskly through the town hall of Rocky Mount. The hall was buzzing with activity; people were setting things up in preparation for Siren's arrival later that day. The meeting with Senior Strong, Ewan had to stop himself from gagging even thinking of that name, was still three days off, but Siren liked to be prepared. She took the time and paid attention to details to turn this town hall into her home turf, even in a neutral area. Senior Strong wouldn't even pay mind to these tiny details, and in Ewan’s mind, that is what made Siren the better leader and the one that would ultimately come out on top. He knew Senior Strong was just a means to an end, and when the dust settled, Siren would rule damn near the world. He thought he might be getting ahead, but it was an honor to work for someone of Siren's caliber, and she had his complete loyalty and faith.

Ewan walked to the back of the town hall, where the kitchen was located, and a doorway leading downstairs. When he reached the bottom of the stairs, it lead into a control room. The large room was filled with computer terminals, large monitors, and staff spread across it monitoring different places and people. He made a b line for a terminal with two men sitting and looking at monitors.

“Good Morning Jackson and McNair.” Ewan addressed the two men sitting at the console.

“Good Morning, sir.” The men replied in unison.

“Any updates?” Ewan asked.

The men updated him with all the information they had, although it wasn’t much. The group hadn’t left the campsite, and there was a small argument between the man with invisibility powers and the blonde girl. It was short and relatively uneventful. They spent a good deal of time in the RV, and the men reminded him that they could not see inside the RV with their drones. They advised that currently, Scott was sitting on the picnic table by himself. Ewan looked up at the centermost monitor, and sure enough, there sat Scott with a black hoodie and a baseball cap. He couldn’t see his face because he appeared to be staring at the ground in contemplation. What kind of BS was this guy going to try to pull? Ewan thought to himself.

“He looks like he is dressed for a rap battle instead of a meeting,” Ewan said to Jackson and McNair, and it hung in the air for a few seconds with the men not knowing how to react. Ewan let out a small chuckle at his attempt at humor, and then Jackson and McNair began laughing, much louder than Ewan knew was apropos for the joke. The perks of being the boss, he thought to himself.

“Thank you, gentleman.” With that, Ewan began to walk away. He was a little surprised that Siren had agreed to meet with Scott, but it was a low-risk proposition. She had a small army of security forces and controlled all the details of the meet. While Ewan didn’t feel threatened by some small-time con artists, he did find them annoying, and he was certain they were wasting their time. Perhaps if Scott didn’t truly have valuable information, he could volunteer to ‘teach him’ a lesson. He so rarely got to get hands dirty in his job anymore that it would be a welcome break.

“Sir, it appears he and the girl are on the move,” Jackson said as he half turned his chair to look at Ewan.

“Must be on the way to the meet.” Ewan looked at the screen, and sure enough, Scott was walking with his hoodie up and eyes still focused on the ground in front of him. Vanessa walked beside him. Was the con-man up to something? Was he trying to conceal or hide something? Did he know the drones were watching him? These questions and more flashed through Ewan's head. He had better stay on his toes, Ewan thought to himself.

“Thanks, Jackson. Do me a favor and make sure the sniper team on the roof is visible when they arrive at the coffee shop. I don’t want him to think that he can play games with us. Oh, and let me know immediately if you guys see anything out of the ordinary on the drone feeds. I want all eyes on them until this meeting concludes.” With that, Ewan walked out of the room without waiting for confirmation from Jackson. It was almost time to get this over. Ewan felt adrenaline start to build in his body. Overseeing so many people had left him few opportunities to get involved in the action. He thought of his days as a simple bodyguard for Siren in the early days of the Dynamics. He knew back then that he had backed the right Dynamic, and soon that was going to pay off as long as he didn't allow any annoyances like these criminals to distract them too much.
