《Dynamic Force》Chapter 13- Change of plans

"You told them what??!!" If it were possible for flames to shoot out of a human beings’ head, as they did in cartoons, then an inferno would be raging out of Alexia's head.
"Well, we are as screwed as a cowboy with no horse." Bricks said
"I admit that it isn't ideal." Scott tried to defuse the situation
"Not ideal?! Not ideal is a bad haircut. This is botched six ways to Sunday." Alexia's burning fury showed no signs of cooling off. She angrily paced back in forth.
“You have to play the hand you dealt sometimes. The only other option was to have no options. Does it suck? Of course. We have had to drop plans and wing it many times in the past. Remember the Henderson Mansion or the STA convention jobs? We work well on the fly.”
“The difference being that our safety and our family’s lives weren’t on the line.” Alexia continued, “You know that just because we aren’t married with kids doesn’t mean we don’t have families that the Overseer is going to kill.”
“We all have a lot to lose. I was there, and Scott did what he had to in the heat of the moment. The alternative was being forced out of this entire area, and then what happens to our families? At least now we have a shot at this.” Vanessa came to Scott’s defense. She wasn’t a fan of the situation they were left in, but she also knew Scott salvaged what little chance they had at success.
“Yeah, I listened to the whole thing, and that guy was going to force us out of town one way or the other if Scott hadn’t done what he did.” Yumi chimed in. She felt strange because she wasn’t’ sure it was her place, but she had as much on the line as anyone else. She thought quickly to her family back at home, and she quickly shut that door as this was no place to start getting emotional or show these strangers how vulnerable she was. She wondered if she even trusted these people or how they could trust her. This whole mission was becoming a mess, and she didn’t even have anyone she could lean on. Yumi quickly pushed her emotions down and locked them away, now was not the time.

"It sucks. I know that. We will figure this out. I don't want to let any of you down, or your families, or mine." Scott did his best to try to project a calm front to everyone. On the inside, turmoil raged inside of Scott. He searched for a way out or a plan that didn't leave anyone’s family in danger. He never thought he would yearn for the days when his most significant decision was to cut more ham or hope the current cheese stock would make it through the day. He thought about how out of practice he was with running a team and making such impactful choices. People always say that things like this are like riding a bike, and it comes right back to you. That was not the case. This was nothing like riding a bike, and he didn't even like bikes anyway.
"I need to take a walk and think this through." With that, Scott headed off towards the woods and slowly faded into them.
"If there was ever a better time for whiskey, I reckon I haven't seen it." Bricks sat on the picnic bench by the RV. He held his flask in the air as if to make a toast and brought it to his lips, and gulped down as much of the rough liquor as he could handle.
"There is plenty to share" Bricks waved the flask around towards the group that remained.
"No, thank you, I have some work to do." Yumi turned and headed into the RV. Alexia ran into the woods in the same direction as Scott without a word.
"Screw it; I'm in." Vanessa sat next to Bricks and grabbed the flask, and took a swig.
"This reminds me of high school," Vanessa said as she took another swig
"How so?" Bricks questioned, a genuinely puzzled look on his face.
"Cheap booze and a man walking away frustrated."

Swindle
—A Celebration of all things chess... Shounen Sports–manga Style. Anasthese is the current reigning World Champion for the Junior Chess Female Division. For years, she's wanted nothing more than to beat the Male Division Champion, Rei. These two are considered prodigies way ahead of their age; none of their peers even come close to holding a candle against them. But be that as it may, Anasthese too, cannot hold a candle to Rei... She's never beaten Rei once he's serious. Anasthese has always considered Rei the best of her generation. It's her lifelong goal to beat and surpass him. That's why, when Rei's cancer had become fatal after their 3rd year running, Anasthese took it hard. Rei will die, with her never having beaten him, not even once. Things take an unexpected turn when Rei reveals that he is far from the "invincible" player Anasthese envisions him to be. Even he has someome he could never beat, not even if his life depended on it... a fellow apprentice who studied with him under GM Amane. A guy so-called "Net". This enrages Anasthese. A person stronger than Rei should not exist. Because if he did, then what has all her efforts for the past years been for? And if this Net "does" exist, why doesn't he challenge Rei for the title? Rei tells her it's not that simple... Net's playstyle is void. It's an enigma. It's chess that should not exist, and should physically not be possible to play. It goes against all logic, and it's power is not something that can be measured in numbers. It's something that would "absolutely not work" in a professional setting. Anasthese attends Rei's funeral as a last rite before setting off for Japan, bound towards the disintegrating Futenma Shintenkan Highschool chessclub, of which there are only two members left: Mukuro and Net. She has to see it with her own eyes, a playstyle that Rei lost to... And as Anasthese stays for the long-term, various misadventures are started at Futenma High, including rebuildung the club, Anasthese's "Royal Guards" (four girls dedicated to serving Anasthese and helping challenge Rei) coming to take her back to America, and unexpected guests gracing the local Sports Meet chess scene. From a guy who can only play well everytime money's involved, to a girl who plays on a weird "Magical Girls vs Orcs" chess set, get introduced to the quirky playstyles that make chess wonderful. (Disclaimer: I am not a chess pro, I'm only 1400. Expect me to have no idea what I'm talking about at certain times...)

The Dreamside Road
Five years after the world fell into chaos, a treasure of artifacts is up for grabs. The relics of the Dreamside Road offer a power that could help rebuild or annihilate what remains. Orson Gregory is an adventurer for hire, but hunts this treasure for answers, not glory. Enoa Cloud’s late aunt helped hide the Dreamside Road, but following in her aunt’s supernatural tradition offers her as much peril as power. Together, Orson and Enoa battle a magic-obsessed militia, clash with a host of rivals, and face constant adventure on their journey to find the Dreamside Road. *Updates Monday and Friday The Dreamside Road is now on TopWebFiction! Vote so people know this exists. _____________________________________ NOTE: The Progression tag applies specifically to Enoa. Also, fair warning, that element doesn't enter the story until she begins her studies. Content: Main characters range in age from teenagers to people in their thirties and older, but it will not contain gratuitous violence or explicit sexual content. It also won’t shy away from implication, anything to make this story and its world feel more real. Characters will freely allude to potentially triggering topics, including living with a disability, facing terminal illness, coping with trauma, surviving societal destabilization, and the consequences of bigotry. At its most intense, the Dreamside Road is a hard PG-13. Worldbuilding: This is not a story with a lot of early exposition scenes, conveniently explaining ‘magic systems’ and political dynamics. Readers will learn, progressively, as the characters do. This story/world has a ‘magic system’, or rather, a set of systems, but the effort to quantify and understand the truth of the setting plays a role in the backstory, as well as in some character motivations. In that same vein, not every character has a firm grasp on the nature of their world, and not every piece of dialog from every character should be taken as entirely truthful Worldbuilding. Also, this isn't the softest Sci-fi. There are at least some basic explanations given for various elements, but Royal Road does not give me a spectrum to choose from. Given the choice between hard and soft, let's just say The Dreamside Road won't be cited in any college Physics papers. Setting and Theme: The Dreamside Road walks the line between fantasy and science fiction and deals with finding one’s place in a changing world. Many of the characters in this story are United States natives and the story begins in the United States, my homeland. However, knowledge or interest in this country is not necessary to understand the story, especially as it progresses. Also, as this is a novel that deals with societal collapse and while that damage may be widespread, in story, I don’t want to overstep and critique the culture of others’ unless I have particular knowledge in a given area. Ultimately, the Dreamside Road is American in the same way Harry Potter is English, fantasies that do not have a full secondary world, but with enough original elements to fully diverge the setting from our the real world.
