《Isekai Tales》Prologue: There is no Isekai

Journal Entry no. ###

This is my last journal entry. Isekai is the romaji of the Japanese word 異世界 which literally means ‘different world’. It is a subgenre of many popular Japanese entertainment media, specifically light novels, manga, anime, and video games. The plot revolves around a normal person being transported to or trapped in a parallel universe. Most of the times, this universe already exists in the protagonist’s world as a fictional universe, but it could also be a whole new world unknown to them. There are many ways of being transported to another world. The most common way is dying in the original world, specifically being hit by truck-san. They are either directly whisked off by a divine being, a strange phenomenon, or for no reason at all, and find themselves in another world either as a reincarnated person starting as a baby once again, or with their original body. Another way is the sudden transposition. The protagonist blinks his or her eyes and suddenly finds themselves in a completely different world. No matter the how’s or why’s, the main point is that the protagonists find themselves in another world where they can then make a difference due to their circumstances: either gaining overpowered abilities because of their divine patron, or just be too smart for the fantasy world they found themselves in because they possess knowledge of advanced technologies from their original world. The rest of what happens after their transfer does not matter to me. What interests me greatly is the existence of these fantasy parallel worlds. Do they really exist or are they just a product of humanity’s curious minds? Today, I will find out. If you find a corpse in my room, I may either be truly dead, or reincarnated in another world. If there is no body otherwise, then I have been transported as a whole to another world. P.S.

Anne, if I find myself in another world, I’ll try to find a way to summon you there. I love you. This journal entry was found in the room of one Mr. Kent Kobayashi whose corpse was found peacefully lying on his bed with a highly modified virtual reality helmet attached, or for lack of better words, melted to his head. A report of the existence of a strange odor coming from Mr. Kobayashi’s locked room was filed two days after the apartment complex experienced a power outage. The Anne mentioned in the entry may be referring to one Ms. Anne Jackson, Mr. Kobayashi’s lover who died six months ago to a road incident involving a passed-out driver of a delivery truck.
