《Mutation Era》Chapter 5: More Humans?

Rachael walked, and walked. Sometimes, she gets distracted by the occasional bunny (a regular one), bun-bun (okay, this one is the bad one), or just a couple of frogs or bugs. But as she walked, no fellow humans were to be found. Although, it might be debated on whether Rachael still counted as a human since she got superhuman hearing from the bun-buns.

But as a side note, Rachael didn’t find out whether she had or didn't have bunny ears yet. Remembering this topic, Rachael moved her hand over the top of her head, feeling for some long, potentially soft and long, ears. To her surprise, she did! They were soft, fluffy and felt good when touched.

However cute they may or may not be, Rachael was worried that other people would mistake her for a bun-bun and attack her or at the minimum hide from her. Although hinding wouldn’t be very effective (Her mutated hearing), it still would make Rachael feel bad that people were as scared of her as they were of the bun-buns, albeit a bit less.

Keeping her mind off that topic, Rachael decided to pursue another point that she had been curious about for a while now.

“Hey super brain?” Rachael mentally called out. “What even are you? I mean, I think that you’re sure as hell not part of me. I really don’t think that I have a part of me that’s so bitchy.”

Sounding as reluctant an annoying mental voice could sound, she responded.

That’s not very nice! Calling the person you’re asking a question ‘bitchy’. Well for your answer, find out on your own! Ehe, I’m not gonna tell you anything just cause I don’t feel like doing so!

Feeling incredibly pissed off, Rachael decided to direct her anger towards a branch on the ground, throwing it in a random direction after snapping it in half. Rachael then stomped forward, although as quietly as you can get while stomping since stomping loudly would probably send 50 bun-bun’s towards her and she didn’t want to die just yet.

Although Rachael was feeling quite bored, she decided to play with her super-hearing a bit. She was already a bit in control of it so she wanted to see if she could get used to a higher level of hearing. She first bumped up the sensitivity a bit and could already hear the difference. She was hearing small details that she wasn’t hearing before.

Firstly, she could very clearly hear the sound of her light breathing and her heartbeat was a light thumping that she could hear in the background. Then when she focused outwards, she could hear the light movements by small grasshoppers, ants and other small ground creatures. She could also hear many other very nice qualities about the forest that she never would’ve heard without her bun-bun ears.

Quite enjoying her pretty-new-but-very-tones-down-super-monster-mutated-hearing, Rachael decided to push it even farther and increase her sensitivity even more. This however, crossed the line of pleasantly-enjoyable and even over the line of slightly-crowded-but-bearable line. It directly jumped into the category of way-over-the-top. Rachael could hear all the tiny sounds and noises that made up a typical forest and even more. She could distantly hear the sound of a car driving, screaming and the other sounds of the pretty far away city that she was in that was also terrorised by bun-buns.

This was obviously way too much for her and it was hurting her brain.Rachael mentally shoved her hearing way back down to a normal person's level and ducked, her hands pointlessly covered over her ears.

“Well, I better not mess with my hearing any more or else by the time anyone else finds me I’ll be reduced to an insane humanized bun-bun,” Rachael jokes, slightly scarred.

Hah! You’re a wuss! You’re too scared to even use your own superpower! You’re scared to help your friend, you’re too scared to properly fight, what aren’t you too scared to do? You can’t even bear a small amount of pain for anything! What an amazing hero you are!

Rachael shook, offended and confused by super-brain’s sudden aggression but deep in her mind, she knew it to be true. But a small part of super-brain’s statement confused her.

“But I’m not a hero?”

Super-brain just scoffed, and started ignoring Rachael. Rachael on the other hand, wondering what she did wrong, just sat down under a tree and lay there for a while, repeating the words that super-brain had metally insulted Rachel with. After thinking for a while, Rachael just forgot about thinking about it and just stood up and started searching for company again.

But before she walked for too long, Rachael saw a group of humans, sitting quietly beside a put-out campfire.
