《Mutation Era》Chapter 3: First(Second) Blood!

Rachael searched around for something that was useful, finding nothing remotely close to that except for the cut off part of the bunnies head, something that she clearly remembered not even touching nor did she pick it up, much less bring it along with her on the marathon away from the monsters. “Strange. How did this get here? I don’t think I brought it along, or did I? I can’t remember.” She voiced out to nobody in particular.

Aha! Lets add on extreme forgetfulness to the list of Rachael’s weaknesses in my mental book ‘Monsters and how to kill them.’ along with stupid, weak, and no common sense.

“Oh great. Super brain comes back to annoy me once again” She groans.

Hmm. Super brain is a name I can work with.

Rachael sighed. “Of course it is. Of course. Now, pull up the section about the demon-bunny’s weaknesses. Also, what should I call you?”

Allow the great super brain to bless you with that knowledge. Let me see. No apparent intelligence, chopping the head in half will kill them, weak to sharp objects or maybe that pocket knife is secretly the legendary weapon ‘The Pocket Knife of Rachael’. 1000000000 attack damage. I also guess you can call me, I don’t know, Super brain?

“Sure. Super brain.”

Rachael layed her back against a tree, pondering how she was to deal with the demon-bunnies were they to find her and how to solve her problem of the lack of vital resources required to survive. Eventually, Rachael decided that the best plan of action was to try and find her way back to the city and try to scavenge in the grocery stores or some food while avoiding the demon-bunnies.

So Rachael got off her butt and tried to search for any tracks that she might’ve left when fleeing to this location. But search she did but unfortunately for her, she found nothing.

“Why!?” Rachael inwardly screamed. “Come come there would be nothing? If I ran here, there would at least be some tracks I left nearby, right?”

But no matter how hard Rachael searched, she didn’t find anything. No tracks at all. No footprints, no disturbed earth, no broken twigs, nothing. Zero. Zilch. Null.

Rachael let out a scream, but she quickly stopped it in fear that the demon-bunnies would find her from the noise as there was no telling how sensitive their ears were. Frustrated that she couldn’t find anything nor could she let out her frustration with a good scream, Rachael sat back down in front of a tree and relaxed. Rachael relaxed, forgetting about Bowler-hat, about Eric’s probable death and about the demon-bunnies.

However reality came back to bite her though, as Rachael becoming relaxed made her lax, and she didn’t pay close enough attention to find out that her short but loud shriek had indeed attracted company and unwelcome ones at that by the loud stomping she heard.

Great job Rachael. Now you’ve doomed yourself for the low, low price of a half-second shriek.

But Rachael ignored Super brain, choosing instead to find a decently sized branch to defend herself with because she didn’t fancy getting so close with her switchblade. Looking beside herself, she found an unwieldy branch but it was the best she found in the time that she had to spare. The rest of which she chose to spend on finding where the demon-bunny was coming from so she could get into an advantageous position

Rachael didn’t have to wait long though as it quickly made itself seen with the demon-bunny’s outline appearing in view. Rachael decided to act first, charging at the monster, branch in hand, and swinging the branch at its head.

However much force Rachael put into the swing, it didn’t seem to even harm the demon-bunny, only serving to anger it even more. It gave an enraged growl and charged at Rachael, all its razor sharp teeth plainly in sight. Startled, Rachael tried to back away but tripped upon a rock, falling down on the ground, but narrowly missing the attack.

Rach you idiot. Didn’t I say that a sharp force was effective against the bun-buns? In nowhere did I say that blunt force to the head is gonna kill it. If you weren’t gonna die before, you’re 100% dead now.

Reminded of her nearly forgotten pocket knife, she threw the branch at the demon-bunny, apparently now aptly renamed to bun-bun, to slow it down. She then pulled out her pocket knife out from her pocket and readied herself for the fight with adrenaline coursing through her veins.

In the sparse moments Rachael had before the bun-bun came within slashing distance, she joked back to super brain.

“If I die, won’t we both die? We’re both the same person after all. So why aren’t you more worried about this?”

Well I dunno. And refocus. The bun-bun is nearly close enough for you to hit.

Slightly startled by how close the bun-bun was, Rachael unintentionally closed her eyes, only to have them be shocked back open by a reminder from super brain. She lunged forward, slashing her small pocket knife at the bun-bun’s head. However her endeavor was unsuccessful, her flimsy attempt at an attack being skillfully dodged by the bun-bun.

However Rachael wasn’t so fast, being sent crashing into a tree with a sickening crack by the bun-bun’s furious slap. It then charged forward, hoping to continue it’s onslaught when Rachael stuck out her knife and the bun-bun rammed into it and fell limp, dying on the spot.

Rachael panted heavily as the fight had taken a lot out of her. She also assessed her injuries. She had a branch stabbed through her shoulder, luckly not hitting any bones however the crash had broken one of her ribs.

“Damn that fucking hurts as hell” Rachael mumbled seconds before she lost consesness and passed out.
