《The Howling Dust》Chapter 3

Gordon sat on the bench in front of the head of the hunter's office, he felt uneasy because of the call from the village head. He didn't know exactly why he was summoned, but he had a feeling this was about him getting lost in the forest.
What really worries him was not the summons itself but because he hasn't got the right story to tell as the reason he got lost in the woods and how he came back safely.
An old man he didn't know came out of the head of the hunter office. He looked at Gordon and said "You may enter young man; Mr. Sully wants to talk to you."
Gordon immediately stood up and entered the head hunter's office, inside were three middle-aged men he recognized, the one sitting in the chair behind the table was Mr. Arden Sully, the chairman of the hunter association, while the one standing beside and in front of the table was Marcon who was his companion during the training event and Rubben Antam, the village head of Eston.
"Have a seat, young man, there's no need to be afraid," said Arden, because he saw Gordon was so tense as he walked into the office.
Gordon quickly sat down in the chair at the table, he felt very tense. This was the first time he had been summoned by the hunter leader and here was also the village head who had been watching him with a sharp gaze.
"I am the lead hunter, and my name is Arden Sully" Arden introduced himself.
Gordon certainly knew who the man in front of him was because he had seen him several times on special occasions, He usually gave a speech at the opening of the event, everyone in the village knew who he was even though Arden himself often interacted directly with the villagers.
Gordon's friends used to talk about the Arden when they were together, saying he was a former special force from the capital, very good at fighting with both weapons and bare hands. Apart from that, Arden was also a user of special powers, namely special powers such as the ability to control elements. There are many types of special powers, for example King Kalid, the ruler of the Nomus Kingdom, who has a special power that can make his body very strong, some even say that King Kalid can turn into a giant if he releases his full power.
The most great of the special power users was, of course, the heroes, according to the story they get their power directly from the gods which make them very powerful, even the descendants of the heroes themselves also have great powers even though their strength is not as strong as their ancestors. With that power they can remain in power all this time.
"I'm sure you already know Mr. Antam and Marcon".
"Yes sir"
"How are you son, are you okay?" Arden asked in a worried tone.
"I'm fine sir, excuse me if I caused a lot of trouble for you" Gordon said, feeling bad after learning from his mother that Arden had all the hunters in the village looking for him for days. Gordon himself did not think that Arden cared so much about his safety that he had to mobilize all the hunters.
"You got lost during a training event supervised by one of the senior hunters, whatever the cause was your safety is my responsibility" Arden said with a friendly smile at Gordon. "We are here just wondering what really happened, so we can avoid something like this from happening again in the future "

Here it is, the moment I feared the most, whether I should honestly tell them what it was or is it better if I come up with a story that makes sense, one that isn't too embarrassing.
After pausing for a moment to consider it, Gordon decided that he would honestly tell them the reason for getting lost, because he needed time to come up with a plausible lie and Gordon felt sure these three people didn't want to wait another day to hear his story.
"That night, after we ate and were about to sleep I slipped away to catch a calf or rabbit or whatever was easy enough to catch" Gordon said, his mouth feeling so dry after saying that, he took a deep breath to calm his heart that beating very fast.
"What for? Is there a shortage of food? As I remember, we caught a deer at that time and the meat was more than enough for the six of us to eat. ”Marcon said, he was confused by what Gordon was doing, even though everything was going well and they were just waiting for tomorrow to return to the village.
“I… I didn't do it to eat, sir,” Gordon said, feeling afraid Marcon would be furious if he told the truth.
"Then for what?" The head of the village said, he was also surprised by what Gordon was doing, sneaking alone at night to hunt animals.
"To ... ... to ... ... to impress Sharon with me sir" Gordon said then he lowered his head, not daring to look at anyone.
The office room became quiet after Gordon said the reason for sneaking that night, Gordon himself became even more panicked when no one spoke, he lifted his head a little to glance at Marcon.
Marcon's face looked shocked, it seemed like he had a hard time accepting the fact that all his troubles during the last few days were because Gordon wanted to impress his crush. Marcon himself thought that Gordon had slipped to defecate, then got lost on his way back to camp. It sounds ridiculous, but according to Marcon it was the most plausible reason.
Gordon immediately lowered his head again, waiting for what the three of them would say.
“I… don't know what to say.” The village chief said hesitantly, he turned to Arden and Marcon.
Arden took a deep breath. "That is an excuse that was unthinkable to me before".
"Falling in love is a natural thing, I have experienced it myself, so I can understand your feelings young man, but do you know that Sharon already ..." Arden stopped in the middle of his words and turned to the village head.
The village head understood what Arden meant and said "Sharon is a good girl, she is beautiful, diligent and smart, I am happy to see her myself" the village head stopped saying for a moment to take a deep breath "But unfortunately for you, the girl is engaged to my son Marcus, they will get married after Marcus officially becomes a hunter".
What?
Gordon looked at the head of the village with a face of disbelief, but his mind changed after seeing the village head's face full of pity on Gordon.
His heart was crushed and on fire.
A Crown of Spring or I will have your soul. Instantly Loksum's face flashed into Gordon's mind which made the embers in his heart go out.
I have other business, bigger than this.
"Ehhmm ……"
"I'm sorry Gordon, I hope you find someone better" the head of the village said, he felt bad for Gordon.

Gordon nodded his head, he appreciated the understanding from the village head after all this was not his fault, Markus was the young man who Sharon loved, economically he was also much more established than Gordon, more handsome and more manly, it was naturally that Sharon fell in love with him.
Gordon himself was a poor young man, he quit his job milking goats to join a hunter organization to get more money, to help his mother and save money to marry Sharon, but what can he do, now he has failed to become a hunter and has no job. Even if Gordon managed to marry Sharon he would not be able to provide a decent life for her, a girl as beautiful as her deserves better. Beside, Gordon still doesn't know if he's still alive in the next year or not.
What he needed right now was a job, he had screwed his test so he needed another chance. He had thought it troughs before and decided to tell them about his power in the hope of getting a better job offer, but he would only tell part of it, the other part he would lie.
"Alright, at least now everything is clear and what I want to know more is how you can survive in the forest for days alone, as far as I know you don't have the skills to survive and there are lots of dangerous animals in the forest." Marcon asked Gordon.
“Actually I also don't know how I survived, I only ate three peanuts that I brought from home for three days, maybe because I ate so much while camping that I could survive without eating that long, and if only I didn't find a small pond with clear water on the fourth day, I'm sure I'm dead by now ” Gordon said.
The village head, Arden and Marcon see each other after hearing the story from Gordon.
"A small pool filled with clear water?" Arden asked Marcon. "Why have I never heard of this?"
"Because there really isn't, sir, not in the forest area where we usually hunt," Marcon said.
Arden paused for a moment after heard the answer from Marcon and then he asked Gordon. "How do you find your way back? The pool that you described should be very far from here.
"Yes sir, about 100 km from here" Gordon said.
Arden's face looked surprised for a moment before returning to neutral again, he continued to look into Gordon's eyes, as if he was trying to determine whether Gordon was speaking the truth or not.
"When did you find the pool, night or morning?" Arden asked Gordon
"Morning sir"
“That's a claim that's hard to believe, kid, we found you passed out near the village road in the morning, and that was the fourth day you got lost, if everything you say is true it means you covered 100 km in just a moment and that's is impossible. ” Arden said, glaring at Gordon.
"Actually I only need 10 minutes sir" Gordon said which made Arden's face flush red as he was starting to get irritated.
Gondon raised his right hand and suddenly, the wind gathered in his palm forming a ball of wind that was spinning very fast.
Arden was so shocked he rolled backwards, while Marcon and the village chief could only watch with their mouths gaping open, their faces both white as sheet, expressions of disbelief clearly visible on their faces.
Gordon was satisfied with the reaction of the three of them, he then stopped channeling his strength and the ball of wind in his hand immediately disappeared.
"After finding the pool and drinking the water, I was chased by an adult brown bear, I tried to run as fast as I could but my leg caught a tree root and fell, while trying to run again I realized that I sprained my ankle and at that time I Realizing that I was bound to die, there was no way I could run from the bear with a sprained leg” Gordon said.
He took a deep breath then continued his story.
"Then I looked back and was very surprised because the bear was right behind me, when the bear opened its mouth and was about to bite my face something strange happened, time suddenly stopped and the force of the wind rose from within me, with the power to control the wind I hit the bear until it was thrown very far, then I flew all the way to the village" Gordon said, he believes his story was quite convincing and makes sense, because many stories tell about people who awaken their power when their lives threatened. Surely it wouldn't be too strange if the same had happened to him, after all people couldn't have any other explanation after seeing his power to control the wind.
The expression of disbelief was still clearly visible on Arden's face, but after thinking for a moment and analyzing Gordon's story from various sides he began to believe in what Gordon was telling, the pinched situation was one of the reasons someone can awaken their special power. Arden himself was a clear example of that, he has a special power to control fire that allows him to join the special forces in the capital, his power awaken when he was in life and dead situation. He still clearly remembered that time, all members of his group were dead and he was surrounded from all directions, when the enemy's sword almost pierced his chest, suddenly flames came out of his palms burning all his enemies to the ground.
"This is happy news, hahahaha, with Gordon here now that we have two special power users, we have to celebrate this." The village head suddenly looked very happy, he immediately called the servant to bring food and drink.
Arden could only shake his head at the village head's behavior, but he did nothing but smile.
Finally, Gordon felt calm because they believed his story, he smiled at all the food and drink served by the village head. All this because of his power to control the wind, it was true what old John said that in this world strength was very important.
"Come on, Gordon, eat, don't be shy," the village head said to Gordon.
They finally moved to the dining room because Arden didn't want his office to be dirty, the dining room was about 20 x 7 meters in size, quite spacious and looked deserted with only the four of them in it.
"What are your plans for the future?" the village head asked Gordon.
"In the meantime I want to find a job sir, so I can help my mother and save for the future" Gordon said while eating the seasoned meat, the smell of the fragrance made him could not bear to eat it immediately, he did not know what kind of meat it was but it really tasted delicious.
"It's special beef kid, the head of the village has to order it from the city because nobody sells it around here" Marcon said to Gordon, after he saw Gordon keep looking at the meat he was eating with amazement.
"Special cow, what is it?" Gordon had never heard of that before.
"It is a special breed of cow, different from the normal white cow, these cows are dark brown and a little bigger than ordinary cows, these cows are treated with special techniques so they produce very high quality meat" Marcon said, Gordon relieved that Marcon doesn't seem angry with him anymore, instead willing to explain to him about this delicious beef.
“If you want, you can work as a hunter,” the village head suddenly said.
"Is it okay, I think I have failed the hunter test." Gordon was quite shocked by the offer from the village chief because he firmly believed he had failed the hunter entry test.
"Camping for one night in the forest is not a test to enter a hunter, after all, only hunter organizations in big cities impose an entrance test. In our village, everyone can become a hunter as long as he or she is healthy and does not have behaviors that endanger himself and others." The village head said to Gordon then he turned to Arden and said. "Do you agree with my opinion, Arden?"
Arden looked at Gordon and said “yes, you can work as a hunter here, your ability to fly will really help us all, but you should know that I have an obligation to report your power to the government, they might station you here or force you to join the military, I don't know for sure, but you have to be ready if there is a call for you because the people who have special powers are closely monitored by the government".
Gordon swallowed his own saliva because he felt a little nervous after hearing the explanation from Arden, he did not know that there were special rules for people who have special powers, he hoped his fate was lucky enough and there was no call for him.
Someone tapped Gordon on the shoulder from behind which took him a little by surprise. He then turned to see that it was the village head, he was surprised since when the village head was behind him.
The village head smiled and said "Calm down young man, you will be fine, everyone knows that people with special powers are always treated with respect by the government, they will do anything so that special people like you will work for them".
Gordon nodded his head and smiled at the village chief, he felt thankfull for his support.
"Tomorrow morning come here again, I have something to explain to you about matters of special powers" Arden said to Gordon, then nodded his head to the Marcon who nodded back and said to the village chief "I have other needs, so I have to go first".
"Oh .. I also have other needs" the village head said, then he turned to Gordon and said "You stay here, enjoy all the food and drinks here".
Arden and the village chief together came out of the dining room while Marcon followed them from behind, Gordon watching them leave with a happy heart, he felt that today was a good day.
Then he saw the abundant food and drink on the dining table and smiled broadly.

If nothing else, plagiarising - ahem, learning new spell structures by observing the local mages should prove entertaining. Sure, there were new dangers in this foreign world, but they wouldn't be anything a fancy bit of spellwork couldn't solve. Though, he would appreciate it greatly if someone could explain to him just what this 'cultivation' business was, why the local Mages were all muscle-brained freaks obsessed with immortality, and why they all seemed to lack any appreciation for the finer details of Essence manipulation. That would be nice.

It's about two teenagers dealing with, among other things, new powers, psycho exes, mysterious datapads and a giant, secret war between the foremost powers-that-be, over information that could forever change the world. Again. You know, normal teenage stuff. Outliers contains some foul language and mild sexual references. It is a complete story, and can also be read on its own website.
