《Shadowlove (Lite)》Chapter 8.5: The Hellish Twins

The moon was bright that night. It enveloped the world with it’s beautiful shade of blue while most of the living rested for the night. The sound of the wind picking against the leaves of the greenery was perfect to camouflage the sounds of the twins rushing through the yard of the castle grounds.

After failing to assassinate the princess in the daylight, they had to appease their leaders with some results. Thankfully, one of them has shown some mercy to them and gave them a boost they very much needed in order to complete the mission.

A magic spell that would affect an entire area and causes everyone to fall asleep for a specific amount of time. It was the perfect kind of spell for an assassination.

The twins smirked as they pass by the various knocked out guards. The more than usual amount for the castle, but it just mean all the more victims they could end up taking after completing the mission and have their own fun.

They each mentally make a note on who to take. The maids inside the halls would be the more popular pick.

“Brother, do you know the way to the king’s quarters?” One of the brothers would ask as they looked to see many doors were down the hall, begging to be looked into.

“Nay, I haven’t actually searched the map in what way we needed to go.”

“Same, I suppose this is supposed to be a punishment of sorts. We’ll need to look through each room.”

“But we can be as noisy as we want. The spell would allow us that much freedom.”

“No brother, we must be professionals. We can’t disappoint the sisters anymore than we already have.”

“And who are you two?” A voice would call out to them from behind. Each turning around, they would face a man cladded in shining armor with a sword that was too decorated to be anything but special.

“It’s Caliber.” One of the brothers stated.

“But that’s impossible. The spell should have affected everyone in the castle.

“Fools, my king has blessed me with the ability to be immune to magic. I didn’t anticipate anyone would be dumb enough to attack the castle after the White Reaper has attacked us. Who are you two criminals?”

“No time to talk, we take him out.”

[Round One Begins. Hellfire Twins’ Turn.]

The twins rush at him from both sides. Caliber draws out his shield and holds it firm as he holds his sword firmly to block both of the brothers. But the force of their combined attack pushes back. He tries to move out of the way, but they simply follow along with him, keeping him locked in their push. The three of them would break through the window and into the yard. Now having tension with the dirt, Caliber would halt their push and finally repel them.

“You’ll have to do better than that to defeat a Champion!” He exclaims as he gets into his battle stance once more. The two would smirk as they continued to look onto him. That was when his instincts alerted him of danger. He looks around and then at his weapons. Each of them have something on them that resembled charms of some kind.

“What kind of trick is this?” He states as he tries to remove them, but it was too late. The charms would give a glow and then send a shock all throughout his body.

“Ahh!” He screamed in pain and felt his body losing control of himself as his hands open up, letting go of his sword and shield.

“It was a good thing that we brought that with us, huh brother?”

“Yes, indeed. Though it was meant for the White Reaper.”

“That was only for the assumption that he intended to fight us.”

“The Champion is as much of a threat to us as the White Reaper. This one’s death will also be a big boost for us.”

“Yes, surely the sisters would finally respect us as equals if we are the ones to have killed the Champion of Lumines.”

Caliber, during their conversation, tried hard to move his body, but it was paralyzed from the electricity flowing through his body.

The twins closed in on him, their wicked smiles showed the knight that he was in for something fatal. But no matter how much force his mind puts into his body to move, he could not budge a single finger to move. As they draw up their daggers, a noise disrupts them.

“What was that?”

“Another one whose able to withstand Apophis’ spell?”

“It could be the king. He did say that the king blessed him with some anti-magic.”

“We’ll have to investigate it. We don’t have anymore traps. We’ll have to rely on our stealth yet.”

Tucking their weapons back into their cloaks, they leave the Champion where he was.

He tries to move his arms but to no avail. ‘Apophis, they say. One of the leaders of Hellfire. They still exist?’ He takes the time to ponder such a possibility. Until the effect eventually wears off, including the magic spell that took over the castle that night.

They ran. They ran as fast as they could. They had to or risk losing too much blood for one of them to continue on.

“This wound is very persisting. To think the White Reaper was as skilled as Caliber.”

“He is a living legend. Imagine the great battle that would occur if they crossed swords.”

“Heh, I better live long enough to see that.”

They ignored the lights under them as they jumped rooftop to rooftop. They passed the spot where they were yesterday when they fired that arrow meant to pierce the skull of the king.

They jumped over the wall that would protect city from the wild. Heading to the spot where their leader awaited them to report.

He stood in the shadow of the walls, his figure secluded and hidden well. Only demones would sense him there.

His eyes would open once he heard the two land before him. They were bright yellow with a sliver of black in the middle, but then quickly verted to a more human-like pair.

Silence fell between them for a minute before he spoke to them. They kept their heads ducked. Too afraid of what he’ll say or do.

“Judging from the count of limbs, you have something to report to me.” He spoke to them.

“Yes, Lord Apophis. We came across some...resistance in our attempt to slaying the king.”

“Go on.” He simply states, his tone was neutral so it was difficult for the twins to guess whether he was bothered or not so far.

“When we first arrived in the castle, we found that the Champion was safe from your spell thanks to the king. We had to use the stun traps on him, but then we heard of others who survived and had to take all of them or risk the whole plan. That was when we came across...him.”

“I take it you mean the White Reaper?”

“Yes, the one who also endured the spell was the princess. We tried to silence her, but the White Reaper stepped in the way to protect her. We had to fight him, in the end, he would be too much for us and we had to retreat for now.”

“Boys…” He says after some time of silence. The twins gulped. The one who lost his arm felt his shoulder go numb, barely feeling the pain of what was lost.

“You have done some well, to report this to me.”

“Thank you, Lord Apophis.” They would say in unison. Taken aback to his words.

“To know what enemies we have on the opponent's side, it would do us some good to plan things accordingly. Without this knowledge, we could have easily lost our only chance at claiming this land as ours.”

Hearing this explanation, they would slowly feel less of failures. They tilted their heads up.

“Right, right.”

“We must now prepare even moreso. I will need to call forth my legion and assemble another spell to disperse upon the castle.”

“We will go alert the legion and return at once.”

“Yes, go call forth for them on my behalf, but don’t come back.”

“What was that?” They looked up in confusion.

“I said….” He would stretch out his arms and grab hold of their heads, pinning them both onto the ground. “, don’t come back. I don’t want your stench of failure anywhere near me anymore.”

“But.”

“You failed me twice already. I only took you two on recommendation only, not because I entrusted you two to complete a simple task.”

He lets them go and they distance themselves scarcely before leaving the area.

With a sigh, he would wipe his hands on the mud nearby, the smell of the sewers was present in the air, but that in itself was miles better than having such germs in his hands.
