《Broken Emperor》Chapter 9

Diana and Ella joined running to the garden. Cayn stopped at their sight, "go check on him, I will be waiting here."
Both the women walked directly to Cassis, yet strangely they were not worried.
Cassis stood there and smiled awkwardly at them.
"I guess your arrogance finally took a hit," Exclaimed Diana, she was annoyed, but she couldn't take it on her brother as he tried to act protective of her.
"It's hard to say who's the oldest when you act like that, dear sister. But, I survive another day, thanks to you." He said as he looks at the ground in shame.
Ella couldn't add anything, While Diana stared at Cayn's back standing far away from them, staring at the dark sky, his hands on his pockets. This scene gave her many emotions.
"Please take my brother back, Ella."
Ella nodded. Held the frail Cassis' arm to walk him, his legs were too weak to move alone.
Diana walked to Cayn slowly.
She stood by his side, raised her head to look at the sky with him.
They stood there for a moment, no one uttered a word.
Cayn slowly spoke with his cracked voice, "Are you mad?"
She slowly turned her head to look at him for a moment, he who stared at the stars, his eyes were cold, tired.
She turns again, "His mouth is wild, I know that. Rather I should be thanking you for teaching him, and for going easy on him. After all, that was only his self-esteem."
"...I had a brother just like him."
Diana's eyes widened, she slowly calmed down, "Would you like, to tell me more?"
"What is there to say, he was a wild one," Cayn chuckled, while she watched him talk listening carefully, "Always starting fights with us, he was the weakest, but he had an astonishing growth. The others worked hard behind the scenes to not get caught up by him."

"The others?"
Cayn finally met her eyes, "Ever since young, I had a lot of brothers and sisters, back then we didn't know the existence of other beings'. And even though there were only humans, for us kids you could never tell which was a wolf and which was not. We managed to escape child traffickers together at least, forming our bond."
"How many?"
Cayn took a deep look in her eyes, before continuing, "We started as a group of fifty-two."
"..." Diana's eyes asked.
"Ten, excluding me. At least the troublemaker made it out alive till the end."
"I'm sorr-"
"Don't."
She nodded, looking at the ground, thinking for a bit before speaking, "In the vision, I saw you, with a demon's head on one hand, and an angel's wings on the other."
Cayn slowly responded, "Let's just say, there were never only two sides of the coin." He stared at Diana seriously as to warn her, "Don't expect them to be what you want them to be."
Diana nodded, she knows it herself. The demons of this world were not ones to be proud of, neither were, the angels.
"May I ask, what was your life like? With this prowess, what did you achieve?" Diana's eyes shinned as she asked, her ambitious self couldn't hide.
Cayn stared at them, "I achieved peace and prosperity for my people."
"Your people?"
"Those I ruled."
"A king?"
Cayn didn't answer.
"An Emperor?"
He nodded. But Diana noticed something different as he nodded slowly, his eyes, were colder, sharp. As if, he ruled something more than what she could imagine. She didn't dare ask.
"How I died, right?"
"Hmm," she shied away in shame, she couldn't hide her curiosity from his eyes.

"The small price I paid for my achievement."
Diana could suddenly see a big scar appear on Cayn, like a sword cut starting from his neck to his face, another one on his eye, more showed up on his neck, and she could see the tip of others that ran through his body, hiding behind his piece of clothes. The same for his sleeveless arms.
Diana shook, the weigh the body of the man in front of her pressed on her heart. They weren't merely normal scars, they followed him even after his rebirth, at the same places. She couldn't imagine the stories each one of them had as they were stuck on his body unable to let go. She couldn't imagine, the sufferings he lived throught.
"The scares, t-they followed you."
Cayn smiled.
Diana, started tearing up, as she got closer. Touching the scares, seeing him talk about his past without any reaction, nor showing any tears, those tired eyes of his, made her cry even harder instead.
"Y-You,ended yourself." As she raised her eyes to look at him.
His eyes twitched, looking away from her tears, she figured it out.
There was a moment of silence, beside Diana's soft cries and fast breaths.
Thud.
She slammed her head against his chest, resting on him, punching him softly as tears fell down her pretty face.
"Why, why?"
"I..." he sighed, "my job was done," he said
Her punches stopped when she heard his answer.
She slowly wrapped her hands around him, without saying a word.
Cayn could only stand there for a moment, slowly holding her in his embrace.
They both closed their eyes, feeling each other's warmth.
"You have me now," she said.
Letting go, taking a deep look at each other.
He gently wiped her tears, slowly placing his hands on her red cheeks.
He looked at her for a moment, whilst she had a determined yet gentle look.
He smiled, holding her closer, gently placed a kiss on her forehead.
"I will be in your care."
Diana looked at him smiling warmly, then immersed herself in his arms again. They were stuck in each other for a moment before she squeezed him tightly letting go.
"I will walk you to your room."
She nodded, as she lightly, placed her hand on his arm.
The walk was but a few minutes, quiet, yet both felt like they exchanged thousands of words. It was comfortable.
"Sleep well." He said with a gentle smile.
"You too, I will see you tomorrow," She smiled back.
He bent down and kissed her hand that she held out elegantly. This time it was different.

Author's Thoughts: What is litRPG (From wikipedia) - LitRPG, short for Literary Role Playing Game, is a literary genre combining the conventions of MMORPGs with science-fiction fantasy novels.[1] LitRPG is a literary genre where games or game-like challenges form an essential part of the story. A LitRPG work simultaneously narrates the story of characters inside and outside of the game-world. At least some of the characters in a LitRPG novel therefore understand that they are playing a game: they are 'meta-aware'. So, while Tolkien's Lord of the Rings is a fantasy novel, a book about people creating avatars and interacting in a Lord of the Rings MMORPG would be a LitRPG novel. Why do I read them? You know, I am not too sure. I love MMOs. I played them, quit them, joined up and repeated the cycle. They are fun! They are a massive waste of time but so are most games. Do I want to read about someone else playing them? Sort of?The advent of VR and the possibility of VR someday becoming so immersive that you can't tell them from reality sets the imagination on fire. What if this could be life? But most stories fall short. At the end of the day the protagonist hangs up his VR helmet and goes to have dinner with his mom and dad or other family and it becomes meaningless. It's like the story that ends because the main character woke up and nothing you read matters. There have been some books that explore the concept of the intersection of reality and total immersion VR. Enders Game is a classic. There were a few others that escape me but they exist, however, the cross between the game and reality is weak.So what if the game was real? The technology needed for total immersion VR is so advanced that by the time we reach that goal technology should have naturally evolved to include several items. You must have direct neural input. You simply can't have a total immersion (all senses and perfect presence) experience without this basic prerequisite. If you have direct neural access, you can probably do neat things like feed knowledge and skills directly to that person. You can undoubtedly do many horrible things as well. Muscles are controlled by the brain. If you control the brain why would you let the body just sit there and rot? A person that sits unmoving for 24 hours a day will have their body whither away just like a coma patient. However, if you control the brain you could control the muscles. On a basic level, this would be isometric impulses, working muscle group against muscle group to avoid atrophy. Taken to its logical conclusion you would be able to gain muscle mass and program muscle memory. The flip side is that you could remote control their body... but let's not go there. So what would people do if it were real? Well, they would probably limit and regulate it since the drawbacks are very obvious. Even if you look at the basic aspects of this you can see some negative possibilities. Look at the Sword Art Online anime. Personally, I think they missed the boat by putting a bomb in the VR helmet. Do you really need a bomb when you have direct access to the brain? So what kind of events would you need to have a situation where the obvious drawbacks haven't been explored? Maybe a society where the advancement of technology has so far outstripped the explorations of its applications that ignorance was truly bliss? Okay, so I had to put in an alien invasion to kickstart the premise, but that was just one of the possibilities.
