《Meta Human》Chapter 18: They will come

Ruff and Alvin paced down the corridors and went down the stairs to a basement in the lab.
"So... We going to just keep him there?" Alvin asked curiously while looking at riff as the went down the stairs.
"Mm... mmm" Ruff nodded.
The metallic stairs made a sound whenever Ruff and Alvin steppes on them.
"But for damn how long man!"
Alvin said with a little displeased tone.
"For as long as the government is prepared to detain metas. For now... They have no clue yet."
Alvin nodded when Ruff gave a sensible explanation.
"Well, well... You surprised me this time. I didn't expect that from you." A bearded bald man with tattoos on his neck said smiling widely while leaning in the glass wall that detained him.
Earlier in city bank, the masked man activated a force field around himself when he heard Ruff count down.
But as soon as Ruff reached zero, an anklet strapped around his ankle beeped flashing red.
He looked down at his foot, where the sound came from and a deep frown settled on his face.
Blue sparks were sent from the anklet to the field and it immediately turned off.
The masked man fell unconscious as smoke emitted from his roasted skin.
Ruff ran towards him before he could hit the ground and immediately dashes away without a trace.
The media and police outside could only see riff disappear from his position then feel a strong gust of wind after.
Ruff crossed his arms over his chest as he looked at the man behind the glass confinement.
But before he could even say a word, the man detained spoke again, "You think a fancy anklet and a piece of glass can hold me." he threw his head back as he laughed wickedly.

When he brought it back up, the wide smile that was eminent on his face was replaced by an angry face and cold eyes.
He punched the glass wall hard.
And it have a din sound without any damage happening to it.
He didn't stop there, he continued hitting it over and over again and a rhythm of a din sound filled the air.
It was pointless, he hadn't imagined a glass as powerful as that.
He had under estimated the capability of Ruff and his team.
Ruff pinched the skin between his brows and shook his head; "Tsk tsk tsk... You didn't expect that nhuh." he walked closer to the glass wall separating them and knocked on it, "Re enforced with tachium. Not even a raging rhino cam break through this."
Ruff's words seemed to have an effect on the bearded man for he stopped hitting the glass and stared at riff coldly.
The familiar evil grin formed on his face again; "Not for long... They will come." he laughed hysterically again.
"Who will come?" Ruff asked but the man kept on laughing his ass out.
"Who will come?" he asked again but all he got was annoying laughter.
He asked two more times in frustration even going as far as yelling and trying to hit him through the glass.
But the man laughed like a mad man.
"He reminds of joker." Alvin who was standing 3 meters away said while clutching a clipboard to his chest and biting its corner as shivers went down his spine.
The man behind the glass finally stopped and put on a serious look again; "Come closer and I'll tell you." he said in a whispery voice while leaning closer to the glass.
Ruff did as he said.

"Just you wait. It's a surpriiiisse." he laughed like a mad man again.
Ruff hit the glass wall again and rushed out of the basement on a fit of frustration.
The man behind the glass stopped laughing and looked at Alvin who had remained and seemed to be wandering in his thoughts as he stared blankly at the air; "Why are you still hear?" he said in a deep growling voice making Alvin almost drop his clipboard.
Alvin dashes out of the confinement unit not wanting to stay any closer with a mad man.
He found Ruff in the control room, facing the wall and leaning on it with one hand while the other pinched the skin between his brows in frustration.
"Who do you think he meant by they?"
Ruff let out a deep frustrating sigh and turned around to face Alvin; "I don't know."
Am idea seemed to cross Alvin's thoughts, "Could it be that he was hired by Hudson?.....Or... Maybe he is part of a meta alliance."
Ruff looked thoughtful for a while then said, "I don't think Hudson would hire him when he could just make his own meta clones. So I think the latter option might be the one." he stroke his chin thoughtfully but still frustrated.
He moved towards the set of curved screens and turned on the computer.
"Are you thinking what am thinking?" Alvin walked closer to Ruff when he saw what displayed on the screens.
Ruff sat on the white gaming office chair streamers usually use.
He bit the finger nail of his right arm as he looked at the screen; "Yep."
A week passed and Alex had finished his examination with ease.
Students breathed a heavy sigh of relief when they wrote down the last answer to the last question of the last paper.
When the examiner announced times up, collected the papers and left, they cheered for the excruciating pain of active thinking was over.
Alex's phone on the side table rang and vibrated.
He stretched out his arm lazily to stop it as he groaned still enjoying his sleep.
He finally woke up after a minute of snoozing.
He did his morning routine, got his backpack and went downstairs towards the door.
As he passed David's room on his way to the stair case, there it was again, his brothers conversation with someone.
"At this time." Alex thought to himself.
"Alright, I'll be at the lounge in an hour." his brother's familiar voice could be heard. Although it was still hoarse since he had just woken up.
Alex ignored it and continued with what he was doing.
He walked to school along the lonely boulevard.
"Good morning bro." greeted Calvin as he took his seat, "Feels good to be back."
"It sure is." Alex agreed.
He continued tapping his pencil on the desk in rhythm as the book in front of him played no role just open there without being read.
His eyes seemed focused on the clock above the white board at the front of the class with his thoughts wandering about.
"Two, One." he counted down in his thoughts and immediately the classroom doors opened and a familiar figure entered.
"Good morning class."Madam Morgan greeted and the lessons began.
The lessons that time weren't as excruciatingly long as before.
Teachers came in and taught for a short while before playing a movie in class.
" Hey Alex... "
Alex turned around when he heard the familiar voice.

The entries here are transcribed from the log of Marie Ruiz, first mate of the Adelaide. It was definitely, definitely not published without her permission or knowledge by a certain lovable artificial intelligence for the purpose of sharing it with my AI friends on other ships who follow it like a soap opera. No way, no how. Remember guys, don’t go spreading this around too much. Only pass it on to those you can trust. God forbid this should ever end up on a public network… (Adelaide is a science fiction web serial featuring the adventures of a crew of smugglers. In space. It’s on the softer end of the soft/hard sci-fi spectrum because the author got a C in physics. Updates every other Sunday.)
