《Lola's Birthday Wish》You Drive Me Nuts
Advertisement
The next day, in the Loud house. Tatiana was making a grim discovery as she rolled over to find a brown teddy bear staring her in the face. Tatiana was going to have to go to school.
She had spent all of yesterday retracing her steps on Lola's birthday and her results were somewhat enlightening. Now that she was in the loud house she could follow up on this end and see if anyone in the family had something to do with this.
Tatiana picked up Lola's phone but then remembered that it was three thirty am in California. So instead of calling she sent a simple text.
The phone said it was half past six, so Tatiana went downstairs and began making herself a healthy spinach omelette.
She needed a step stool to reach the stove and her short arms made it hard to flip the omelette just right but it was a passible endeavour.
She was about to make herself some coffee but, upon reflexion, decided against it. She had no idea if Lola had ever tried coffee and her six year old body might not be able to handle that much caffeine.
Tatiana felt like something sweet so she found a packet of hot chocolate and made that instead.
As she ate her breakfast she decided to look over Lola's homework and make sure it was done properly.
Lola's e-mail yesterday was very informative. Tatiana now had firm grasp over Lola's personality and daily routine. Lola had also made some personal requests regarding her social life at school that Tatiana was going to have to try to repair.
Lynn loud sr entered to the kitchen to find his six year old daughter eating an omelette, drinking from a coffee mug and skimming the newspaper like a boss.
"God damn republicans." Tatiana murmured to herself as she shook her head in contempt. She looked up and saw Lynn sr staring at her.
"Good morning." Then, remembering whose body she was in she added. "Daddy! I didn't see you there!"
"Hey..Lola."
Tatiana got up and give the man a big hug . "I brought your paper in for you. heh-heh. Garfields really funny today."
"riiiiiight. What time did you get up?"
"6:30. Oh! I should probably start putting myself- I mean! ...awww, I don't want to go to school today, but I guess I better start making my lunch." Tatiana said.
Lynn Sr choked back emotion. "Oh. You...don't want me making your sandwiches anymore?"
"Well. I mean. I'm right here. And I'm all dressed. And the utensils are already out."
Lynn Sr sniffed. "No. I understand. Your growing up and want to start making your own meals. I'm okay." He sniffed as his eyes started to water.
"Oh for the love of-" Tatiana murmured under her breath.
Then she slapped herself in the face. "Come on! It was your idea to help each other keep up appearances. Stop being proud and act like Lola!"
Tatiana walked back up to the counter and said, "That's right daddy. I'm going to make my own sandwiches today."
Tatiana took a knife, stuck it in a jar of peanut butter and began slathering it across two slices of bread like a lunatic. Then she scooped a big spoonful of jelly and poured it onto the bread and the counter as well. Making as much of a mess as possible.
"Whoops! forgot about the crusts." Tatiana said as she took an even bigger knife and held the bread slices in one hand and positioned the knife right above her fingers.

Mr Loud grabbed the knife in a hurry. "Actually! Why don't you let me do the crusts for you honey? You can go and grab an apple from the fridge, okay?"
"Aw, I wanted to make a sandwich."
...........................
After changing her clothes (from the peanut butter). Tatiana boarded Vanzilla for school.
She was the first one in the van and had to wait fifteen minutes for the other siblings to arrive.
"Last time one of my employees was this late, I fired him as an example to the rest." she thought coldly. "But they're not my employees. These are my sisters and brother. And they're making me late. So as Lola I wouuuuuuuuld..."
Tatiana began honking the horn and yelling at the top of her lungs, "COME ON! GET THE LEAD OUT!"
"Okay, okay! Thank you for making sure the horn works." Lori grumbled as she walked out the front door with the keys. The other loud siblings followed.
Tatiana smiled to herself. Those e-mails were VERY helpful.
...........................
Lola woke up in the bright room. An alarm was going off on the glass table next to her. Lola was going to have to go to work.
She groaned loudly. Then, after a second she pulled herself up and read Ms. Tiches text message.
"Another meeting? Not those grouchy director guys again." Lola groaned.
But soon she took a deep breath and let it out. "Okay Lola. This is no time for being a grumpy pants. Ms Tiche is doing her best to help you so you have to do the same for her. Put on your clothes and act like a grown up until your back in your body."
Lola re-read the e-mails she got from yesterday. "Wear the black business suit or the blue one for work. The way you wear my hair and makeup is satisfactory but I use only a base liner for my skin and no lipstick. See attached picture. Thats how I look at the office."
Lola looked at the picture and memorized it. "Hmmm. So I was pretty close before."
Lola made the necessary adjustments in the bathroom and called Robert to come and pick her up.
"Good morning ms. Tiche."
"Good morning Robert. How are you today?"
Robert said he was doing very well and the two made small talk about Roberts family and living space.
When Lola got to work she read the e-mail again. "Please tone down your walk. Your posture is fine but too much hip swinging sends the wrong message. You want to be calm, relaxed, but authoritative."
Lola made the adjustments and walked past the cubicles.
"Ms. Tiche?"
"Yes?" Said Lola to the employee with the dark curly hair.
"The guy from Gigamarx finally called back..."
Lola's blood froze. What's a Gigamarx? That wasn't on the list. ....Don't show emotion, said the e-mail
"Hm-mm." was Lola's reply.
The Employee paused for dramatic effect and then spread his arms wide. "They loved it! They want to start marketing in the fall."
"....you're never surprised...." said the e-mail
"I had a feeling they would." Lola said casually. "This autumn promises to be a very good one. Ask him for date when we can discuss this further."
"Yes ma'am. When he calls back I'll have Sally put something in the books." Said the employee
Lola flipped her hair and said, "Satisfactory."
The employee began to tear up after Lola left. He turned to his co-worker and said, "Did you hear that? She said I was satisfactory."
"Relish it. That's her highest form of praise. Only Sally Cohen gets those on a regular basis." said the co-worker.
Then a third co-worker popped out and said, "Not quite. I heard old George got a VERY satisfactory right before getting promoted."
The other two gasped. They had never heard of anyone getting a "Very Satisfactory"
Meanwhile Lola got to her office and heaved a big sigh of relief. She hoped to heaven gigamarx was something really important.
........
School was business as usual. Everyone except Lana was excluding Tatiana.
Which was fine, Tatiana focused on doing Lola's school work. They learned what the state capitals were. Then after a pop quiz on grammar, the teacher read thirty pages of charlottes web. And Tatiana once again felt thirsty. She really needed a drink to get through this level of tedium.
A shot of rye. A glass of bourbon. Beer.... Nice cool beer....
The bell rang and Tatiana ran off to find Lisa Loud in the cafeteria.
"Body swapping?"
"Thats right." Tatiana took a bite of her sandwich. Lynn sr did make them really good. "Didn't you say once that if Lynn didn't stay out of your room you'd put her brain in the body of a chimpanzee?"
"I said no such thing." Lisa replied with her usual assurance.
"You said something about putting her brain into something."
"I was probably just bluffing. After all, she did spill my urine samples all over the floor."
"Hm. Gross. But the body swapping thing isn't possible?"
"Why are you so interested in body swapping?" Lisa tipped her glasses in curiosity.
Tatiana had spent the morning on precisely that question. "Show and tell is coming up and I really want to wow them this time. Could you invent something to put my brain into the body of another kid?"
"That's not funny. Science is not toy. It's the light that cuts through the darkness of human ignorance and lifts us up to a higher plane of evolution."
"God damn. I have got to hire this kid before someone else does." Tatiana thought to herself. Out loud she said, "But you COULD put my brain in someone else's body right?"
"I wouldn't know. I wouldn't waste my mind on such lunacy." Lisa said as she bit into her sandwich.
Tatiana took a bit of her apple. Raised her head and very softly said, "Chicken."
Even for a genius, Lisa rose to that bait like any typical four year old. "Alright Pinky! If you want to get serious then here it is."
Lisa pulled out binder full of paper and quickly began scribbling notes while talking very fast. "Swapping a human brain is not like swapping a heart or a kidney. The brain is connected to the central nervous system and spine. Removing the brain effectively kills the body unless you use a variety of machines to keep the heart and-"
Lisa was off on such a tangent she didn't even notice that Tatiana was reading her notes over her shoulder. When Lisa paused for breath Tatiana interjected, "But couldn't you, like, convert my mind into data and store it in a computer? Then download my mind into someone else's brain via satellite dish?"
It sounded ludicrous, but it was the most scientific explanation she could think of. To her gratification Lisa paused and gave that idea some serious thought.
"Where did you come up with that?"
"Eh. some dumb movie Lincoln was watching."
"Well....Hm...the digitization of a human brain isn't impossible. I suppose under the right circumstances....but to then download yourself into a someone else's brain..."
"Yes?"
Lisa looked up. "I must congratulate you Lola. I know you just pulled that out of your keister but its not entirely idiotic. Except for beaming yourself into another body through a radio signal. Thats not possible."
"Why?"
"Because the process of going from flesh to data would be very time consuming. You couldn't just transfer your brain through a radio signal into another body. You'd have to go body-computer-satellite- another computer- body. Understand?"
"Hm. Well, thank you Lisa that was very helpful."
Tatiana took her lunch away. If a member of the family is guilty it wasn't Lisa. The thought wasn't in her head until Tatiana put it there. Plus, she's right about the process. There's no way to transfer a mind to another body miles away overnight.
"Lola?"
"Yes Lisa?"
"What time would you like to run the experiment?"
Tatiana's eyes went wide. "Pardon?"
"Digitizing your brain into data. When would you like to try it?" Lisa said with a peculiar grin on her face.
"Uh!...you know what? The idea of being inside a computer is a lot creepier than just going into someone else's body. I'm going to take a rain check and find something else to show."
Tatiana ran off to look for Lana.
..........
"Psychic powers?" Lana looked curiously at her twins face.
"Yeah! I read online that twins have psychic powers. Reading each others minds, feeling each others pain, switching bodies, all kinds of neat stuff!" Tatiana made it sound as exciting as possible.
"Whoaaaaa." Lana gasped in amazement. "How would we do it?"
"Well lets test the pain thing. Run around the corner and bang your head against the wall. If I feel it then we have psychic powers."
Lana raced around the corner and a loud thumping could be heard. "You feel anything?!"
"No." Tatiana said while biting her lip. She was being sarcastic and Never intended Lana to try it. "Try hitting it harder."
A louder bang could be heard. Then Lana hobbled back with her eyes dancing around her head.
"How about that? Did you feel it?"
Tatiana burst out laughing. She couldn't help it. Lana's expression was priceless.
"Heh, heh. I guess it didn't work huh?" Lana said while rubbing her skull. "Its nice to hear you laugh again. You were pretty gloomy for a while."
Tatiana caught herself and stopped. When was the last time she laughed this hard? She couldn't remember. After getting Lana an icepack Tatiana asked. "Hey Lana?"
"Yeah?"
"Remember when I wrecked our birthday?"
"Yeah."
"If you could've have wished me to be in someone else's body. Who's would you choose?"
Lana gave Tatiana a curious look. "I don't know. Why?"
"I'm just spit balling here. Say you had the power to send me away and put someone else in my body. No one would know I was gone and you could have a completely new sister. Who would you choose?"
"Uh...thats kind of weird."
"Humour me. Try and remember how angry you felt after the party."
Lana closed her eyes and though really hard. "I'd pick....a dog!"
"A dog."
"Yeah! Or a parakeet! Hehe, could you imagine having a parakeet in your body?"
So Lana has nothing to do with this. Another name off the list.
With ten minutes left of lunch Tatiana went to the table of gloomy kids dressed in black and found the last sibling to be interviewed.
"Lola? What are you doing here?" She said
"Hey-" But then Tatiana froze mid speech.
Her mind began to race. "Come on. Lola sent you full bios on all of them. You had all their names memorized by birth last night. Lori, Leni, Luna, Luan, Lynn, Lincoln.....Lincoln.....Lincoln...."
"Do you want something?" said the creepy girl.
"Oh my god! Why can't I remember her name! I've got a photographic memory, this should not be happening. Come on. Begins with L.....Leti....Laura....Lizzie.....Liv....Lucy...Lacy....Lassie...Lammie.... None of those sound right!"
"Lola?"
"Hey......sis." Tatiana said as she playfully punched the girl in the shoulder. The girl responded by wiping herself off like she'd been soiled. "So I was wondering. Your an expert on magic spells. If I wanted to swap bodies with someone, would there be a magical way of doing that?"
The other goths sat up with rigid attention.
"Whoa..." murmured the creepy girl. "A spell to swap bodies with someone else?"
"Well, more of a curse really. You know, force them to try and live my life while I enjoy theirs. Temporarily of course. Twenty four hour thing."
"Goth huddle." Said a girl with a grey dress.
The kids huddled together and whispered amongst themselves. Tatiana looked at the shoes they were wearing and shook her head. "They must have lost all feeling in their feet years ago. That can't be comfortable." She thought
The kids broke up and the girl in the grey dress said. "Are you free after school today?"
"Yes."
"Then we may have what you're looking for." said a tall pale skinned kid in a white cloak.
The Goths all smiled creepily but Tatiana paid them no mind. "If they were responsible for this they wouldn't be talking like I don't know what they're going to do. It's not her either. But maybe they know something I can use."
Tatiana agreed to see them after school and then the bell rang.
......................
Sally brought a delicious sushi lunch for Lola but she seemed somewhat moody after delivering it.
Lola's day at the office had been better than before. Tatiana had made a full list of what to do today before going to bed and Lola was able to complete most of her tasks ahead of schedule this time.
She listened as several employees made reports and wrote them down after they left.
She delegated tasks (bossed people around) the way Tatiana wanted.
She went to the design department (getting lost for only five minutes) and collected a disc that she needed to view and make a decision on tomorrow. Lola was supposed to put it in the bag for Tatiana but instead she decided to give it a look herself to see what sorts of things Tatiana did for a living.
The disc was a car commercial. For that brand new self driving car that was coming out soon. It was a very detailed commercial with calm, soothing music. The car looked really fancy. "It's missing some pizazz though." Thought Lola "I would add some happier music. Something you can dance too."
"Tanya?"
Lola looked up and saw Sally standing in the doorway. "Its time for the evaluation."
"Right. The evaluation. Of course. I'll just grab my..."
The two women looked at each other. Lola didn't know what to bring to this. "My......phone. Here it is! It was in my pocket. Lets go."
.........................
The elevator went down to the lowest level it could go. It opened with a loud whoosh and a puff of air. Lola stepped out and suddenly felt very intimidated.
It was like something Lisa would build if she had a million dollars. The walls were cold steel. Invisible doors led to a series of rooms. Men in lab coats pushed buttons and made things sparkle and beep.
"Woooooow..." Lola marvelled.
"Ms. Tiche!"
Lola turned to her left to see a group of old grumpy people in suits standing in a room with invisible walls.
Lola adjusted herself and stood in front of the door. It didn't open.
"Ma'am? your security card?"
Lola swiped her card into the control panel and tried to hide her red face.
The grumpy people were all from the board of directors. Lola remembered them from her first switch. One especially. Mr Macgruber. A mean old man with a big paunchy belly who didn't seem to be happy with anything.
"Glad to have you grace us with your presence." He said sarcastically.
"Ex-cuse me?!" Lola snapped
"Easy now Tanya." Said a woman in a green business dress "We all want the same thing here."
Lola took a deep breath and got her emotions back under control. She had to be Tatiana.
"Alright everyone. Lets get this evaluation under way." Lola said casually.
Three lab engineers came forward and removed a tarp, revealing a huge machine that was vaguely shaped like a birds head. The front of it was pointy and narrow and the back part had two edges sticking out like ears. It was coloured hot pink with a yellow stripe on either side.
"What the blazes is this?" Macgruber bellowed
"This is the prototype of the new bio-degrable energy vehicle. Right now it only seats two people but if this new fuel proves to be cost effective, we intend to enlarge the vehicle to accomidate-"
"What's with the design? Who came up with that?"
The technician pushed his glasses up and said timidly. "That would be Ms. Tiche."

Beast
A threat to the galaxy has come from another, and the Union of intelligent life will go to any length to stop it. Military Quarantine has held for hundreds of thousands of cycles. Traders, merchants, colonists, and Pirates live risky lives along the fringes as the politics from the inner systems fail to see the larger threats beyond their borders. A lone human finds himself far from home with no memories to how he arrived. A failing Trade vessel plays on a desperate gamble, while a malicious parasite searches for a suitable host. ............................................. Author's note: Beast is a story that I wrote a long, long time ago. Some of you might have read it then, back when it was posted on reddit over at r/HFY. It was my first webfiction and made in the spirit of that subreddit's "genre" of humanity being awesome. But, it is also a story that has bothered me a little bit. Just like most new writers tend to do, I made mistakes and errors that feel painful to reread. A Space Opera will be a Space Opera, but I had prose that makes present-me cringe. Still, at the same time, the story is still very much a tale I've never given up on. It was my first adventure into fiction: Beast was a crazy adventure with bodysnatching aliens, galactic war, threats from across the universe... Posting this story here is a way to try and redeem myself a bit. I won't call it a complete rewrite, because it's not, but I have wanted to go through and correct some of the major issues Beast has for a long time and put it somewhere more accessible to read (instead of as posts/comments on reddit) and I figure that now is as good a time as any. Additional corrections you might notice are welcome.

Nothing is certain, but if there’s any chance that reaching the monolith will bring Rey back back, then Clay will do everything he can to reach it. This is Book 1 in a new series from Stephen Roark!
