《You Saw Right Through Me》The Trial of the Era

We went into the courtroom and saw Kaede and Rantaro's photos. They're faces were crossed out with hot pink paint. We all got to our places and Monokuma explained how the class trial works once more.

"Himiko is suspicious." Angie stated straight out.

"What? Why are you blaming Himiko all of a sudden?" Tenko asked, frantically.

"Well, she is the most suspicious at the moment."

Kiibo said that Ryoma was killed during her magic show as well. "Ryoma and Himiko switched, and he was eaten alive!" Kokichi suddenly sobbed.

"No, that's wrong!" Everyone turned to me. "The Monokuma File stated that Ryoma died of drowning, not by getting eaten by piranhas. It was his body that was in the tank, not Ryoma himself. He wasn't eaten alive, he was already dead."

"So?" Angie began. "Ryoma drowned, Himiko changed places with him, and he was eaten."

Kiibo shook his head. "Himiko only had 60 seconds to escape. Even if Himiko did switch places with him, that's an insufficient amount of time to drown someone."

"If that's the case, then when did he drown?" Kirumi asked. "I believe Ryoma drowned before the show started." Shuichi stated. Kiyo agreed. "Before being eaten by the piranhas, he made no attempt to escape the tank." True... but then when did he die exactly?

"Are you saying that Ryoma's body was hidden until the culprit made it appear?" Kiibo asked. Gonta put a finger on his chin. "Hidden? Where?"

I thought back to how the stage looked during the show. I doubt that he was in the tank with Himiko since we didn't see him before the curtains closed.

"The culprit would have to hide the body near the tank, and show it during the act." Kirumi said.

"Is there a place where the culprit could've hid the body?" Kokichi asked. "Oh wait, Himiko should know since she's the one who performed it."

In a fit of rage, Tenko started scolding everyone. "Why are you all still picking on Himiko?" Kaito scratched the back of his head in annoyance. "Man, we've gotta figure out how the trick works before the body was hidden."

We all began naming different ways Himiko could've escaped the water tank.

"Maybe she just climbed out?" "Nah, someone would've noticed"

"Perhaps a mechanism was set up on the stage"

"The curtain that covered the tank was certainly suspicious."

"What about that square pain of glass we found in the tank?"

"Maybe there was a secret hatch?"

"It must be real magic!"

"Maybe there were two Himikos and one was Tsumugi in disguise."

"I doubt that." I said. "Then what could it be?" Miu asked me. "Well, I agree with Maki. There was probably a secret hatch or a faux wall." Shuichi said. "That would explain the puddle we found backstage."

"That's wrong!" Tenko yelled.

"Huh? W-Why?" Shuichi questioned.

"You're such a degenerate male that you don't know why you're wrong. I'll smash your face in with hot burning steel!" She balled her hand into a fist. "That won't be necessary." I said calmly.

Everyone turned to me. "Just because we figured out how Himiko got out, that doesn't mean we figured out how Ryoma got in. And no, it doesn't prove that you're not a mage, Himiko."

I explained how there was a puddle seeping out from a wet staircase. "I think that the staircase was there to cover up the hatch. I believe there's a door in the staircase facing away from the audience that Himiko could've gotten out of."

Shuichi added to my testimony. "However, the person who did the act must've been soaked, explaining the puddle that was found next to the staircase."

"Caught you soaking wet and red-handed!" Miu accused.

"I don't think so." I hummed in thought. "First of all, just because we know how Himiko escaped, that doesn't mean it's linked to Ryoma."

"Wait, but how was Himiko dry?" Tenko asked. "Wouldn't her clothes still be wet?"

Shuichi thought back to the magic show. "She might have changed her uniform. All of our closets are stocked with the exact same uniform, right?" Angie recalled that she saw Himiko come with a towel and extra uniform.

"Anyways, back to where the culprit hid Ryoma's body." Kirumi said. "From our discussion earlier, his body could've been hidden inside the staircase." Kiibo looked confused. "How would both Himiko and Ryoma fit in the staircase?" Tsumugi put her hand on her cheek. "It would be hard for even Himiko and Ryoma to fit in there."

Angie said that Himiko could've switched places with Ryoma. "I think that explains how Himiko exchanged places with Ryoma's body."

"Wait, why are you all assuming it was Himiko?!" Tenko yelled.

"Well, it really only could've been Himiko, right?" Angie said. "Tenko, if you keep defending Himiko, and she does happen to be the culprit, we'll all die. Are you okay with that?"

Without a second to think, Tenko blurted out, "Yes! I'd rather die believing in Himiko! I'm going to keep believing in her 'til this body takes its final breath!"

They began debating on whether or not Himiko switched the bodies, but then I remembered.

"Wait!"

Everyone hushed to let me speak. "According to Gonta's account, when he went onstage, there was nobody in the tank. No Himiko, no Ryoma." Shuichi spoke up. "That's right! And Himiko couldn't have hidden with the body because she wouldn't think anybody would see because of the curtain!"

"What about the tank of piranhas?" Kiyo suggested.

"But wouldn't the piranhas have eaten the body already?" Kaito asked.

"Maybe the body and the piranhas were separated." But how would they be separated? Was there anything in the tank? "Oh! The glass pane!"

"You mean in the tank?"

"Yeah," Shuichi agreed. "The glass pane could have been separating Ryoma and the piranhas. That's why Angie thought that there were more fish than usual! But where did the glass pane come from?"

Himiko spoke up. "That was the lid. It's really easy to detach it, so it definitely could've been used to separate the body and the piranhas."

"Wow, thanks for that useless explanation!" Kokichi said, sarcastically. "I don't think it was useless," I began. "That means that whoever killed Ryoma had known about Himiko's act, and about the tank."

I looked at Himiko. "Who exactly helped you set up yesterday?" Himiko thought back to yesterday. "Um... Angie, Kaito, Kiibo, and Kirumi." Hm, not a lot to go by. "Great, now we're back to square one!" Miu said.

"And how are we back to square one?" Kokichi asked her. "Cuz now everyone could be the culprit!"

"Nuh uh, we can narrow it down to whoever doesn't have an alibi yet." I thought for a moment. "Wait, but when exactly are we talking about?" I looked at Shuichi for some sort of guidance. "I think we're talking before nighttime, since the gym is closed during nighttime hours."

Kokichi imitated a bell on those trivial game shows. "The Ultimate Detective gets it right again!"

"Wait, but can we narrow the timeframe down a bit more?" Kaito asked. "I think we can narrow it down with the last time someone saw Ryoma alive." Shuichi said. "Which would be around 8:00 last night." Kirumi stated. "So the crime was committed from 8:00 to 10:00pm last night."

I put my finger on my chin. "Just because that was the last someone claims to see Ryoma alive, that doesn't mean he was killed in that time period." I muttered.

"What was that, Y/N?" "O-oh, nothing."

"So all we must do is see who has and doesn't have alibis for that time period." Kiyo said. "Most of us were at the Insect Meet and Greet once we were... detained by Gonta."

I thought for a moment. "That would be Kaito, Kirumi, Kokichi, Maki, Miu, and I. I was chasing around Kokichi, but I lost him for some of it since I went straight to the dormitories but he wasn't there." Kirumi raised a hand. "I was with him in that time period, I assume."

"Were you not in gym?" Gonta asked. "You say you were busy." Kirumi nodded. "However, I was only there for five minutes." I sighed and crossed my arms as Miu yelled. "I think it was the cleaning lady here!"

"Miu, you don't have an alibi for that time period either." Kiibo reminded. "What? I'm suspicious? B-but I don't even know where the gym is!"

Everyone who wasn't at Gonta's research lab, except for Kokichi and I, began claiming they weren't the culprit.

Until I heard Kiibo say, "But Kirumi, didn't you stay in the gym?"

"Wait, I think Kirumi has an alibi." Kiibo turned to me, asking for an explanation. "Kokichi said that he ran into Kirumi and claimed that she was with him for about an hour, from 9:00 to just before 10:00."

"If I were the culprit, that means I killed Ryoma, transported him to the gym, and hid him in the fish tank in 5 minutes." Kirumi said. "Which is highly unlikely."

I nodded, although I don't think she was clear of suspicion quite yet. "So the only ones capable of the murder are the other three, who don't have alibis." Kiyo said.

"Actually, there's one person we can take off that suspect list." Kokichi said. I cringed, knowing what he was talking about. "Y-You mean... Miu, right?"

"That's right!" Kokichi said. "I saw her running around half-naked from running away from Gonta." I remembered what she had said.

"Things got a little heated if you know what I mean."

She probably meant she used her... female parts and Gonta's urge to be a gentleman to get away from him.

"That could've been anybody!" Kaito said. "No, it's Miu without a doubt." Shuichi concluded. "According to her and Gonta's statements. Gonta said that he saw Miu's 'secret woman weapon' and Miu said that she showed it." I covered my mouth. "Gonta, your poor innocent eyes!"

"Most of that was unintelligible nonsense, but it seems like Miu does have an alibi." Kiibo stated. Kiyo held the bill of his hat. "That means that Kaito and Maki are the only ones left without alibis."

I looked to the ground and thought really hard. That can't be it. Maki may seem like the type to kill someone, but I feel like she actually was in her research lab the entire time. She won't let us see in there, so I assume that she actually was doing something in her research lab.

Kaito claimed to be running around, hoping Gonta wouldn't find him, and from the fear he showed when Gonta got mad during Rantaro's investigation, I think he actually is genuinely scared of Gonta.

I doubt he would get out of his hiding spot to kill somebody. Maki seems to throw around threats, but never carries them out. Even though Maki didn't want to investigate Ryoma's case, she didn't want to participate in anything once her research lab showed up, so she may be hiding something in there. Something that isn't related to the case. If it were, she would've helped with the investigation since the deed was already done. Besides, just because they're the only ones without alibis for that moment of time, that doesn't mean that they could be the only suspects that we have.

"I have an idea!" Kokichi said. "If one of the two suspects is guilty, that means the other is innocent. So, if they're innocent, they'll blame the other one, right? So that means there's someone amongst us who knows who the culprit is. So do your best to convince us."

I tilted my head. "What are you saying Kokichi?" He giggled. "Have the two argue for their innocence!"

Tsumugi looked rather worried. "Won't they just push the blame back and forth?" I shook my head. "No, one of them is bound to screw up." Kokichi nodded. "See? Y/N understands! You're too afraid to point your fingers at others, so you hide behind the words trust. How do you expect to find the culprit when you're all concerned for each other's feelings? If you're planning to expose a liar, you have to corner them psychologically. Only then will the culprit reveal themselves!"

Everyone looked at me. "Y-Y/N, this isn't how true psychology is, right?" Tenko asked, nervously.

"Depending on how you use it, yes, spotting lies is a branch of psychology." I looked at Kokichi. "So how do you wanna start it?" He pulled out a Kubs Pad. I didn't even notice he still had one. "This was in Ryoma's room!" I leaned on my court stand. "So, are you saying one of our suspects has Ryoma's video?" I asked.

"Ding ding ding! You got it, Mind Reader!" I remembered the motive video I had; it was Kaito's. "So, Ryoma had Maki's video, right?"

Kokichi looked surprised. "How'd you know?" I was silent for a moment.

"I... I had Kaito's." Maki scoffed. "So? Just because Ryoma had my motive video, that doesn't mean I'm the culprit."

"Let's start this argument then!" Kokichi said. "No. We don't need to debate. All I know is that I'm not the culprit, and Maki isn't either." Kaito said. "It's just a hunch I've got." Kokichi looked dumbfounded. "A hunch. You're basing our lives on A HUNCH?" I put my hand on Kokichi's shoulder and he relaxed his muscles.

"Hey, all I know is that neither me or Maki is the culprit. I believe in Maki!" Maki looked confused. "Why?" Kaito explained that it doesn't matter where the clues point, and all that matters is what he believes. "So.. you don't have any evidence?" Kirumi asked.

I shook my head. "Actually, I think his 'hunch' may be right." Everyone looked confused.

"Human intuition, or a hunch as you call it, is linked to a human's gut instinct. Most of the time, when a person doesn't listen to this 'hunch' it ends up bad. For example, Shuichi's instinct while investigating is that no matter what anyone says, every little detail is important. However, many of us are afraid of using our intuition, like how Shuichi is afraid of revealing the truth, despite the fact that he knows he has to. Animals have intuition as well, like a cheetah's 'hunch' that a deer won't be able to outrun them if they run fast enough. Kaito's hunch is that both him and Maki are innocent, and personally... I think so too."

Everyone looked at me. "I guess since it's coming from the Ultimate Psychologist, it must be true." Kirumi admitted. Shuichi looked me in the eye as I smiled at him. He smiled back and looked at everyone.

"I believe in Maki as well." Maki, despite her seemingly expressionless face, looked surprised in my opinion. "W-What?"

"Innocent until proven guilty, right?" Shuichi said. "Sure, no evidence is linked to the fact that our suspects are innocent, but no evidence is linked to the fact that they're guilty either." Kokichi looked confused. "Unless you have evidence in the contrary, these two will remain sus-" "So I'll just have to turn it around right?"

Everyone looked at Maki. "It's not like I owe this idiot for defending me, but this idiot may have encouraged me a bit." Is 'idiot' Kaito's nickname now? "I didn't wanna say anything, but I think I should. I met up with Ryoma at nighttime yesterday, just past midnight." Just as I thought. The murder wasn't committed at that time.

Kirumi seemed to notice the smile that appeared on my face. "That's what you were muttering about, wasn't it?" I nodded. "Wait, but why wait until now to mention that?" Kiyo asked. "Yes, it does seem a bit too convenient." Kirumi agreed.

"Isn't it obvious? Maki is so desperate that she has to lie!" Kokichi said.

"Oh shush, Kokichi. Maki, please continue." She explained that "Ryoma came to my room to see the motive video I had received. However, I hadn't checked it because I didn't think it was important."

That is true, she did state that she didn't check her motive video.

"Wait, but how did Ryoma know that you had his motive video?" Kiibo asked. I looked at Kokichi. "Kokichi, is there something you'd like to tell us?" He was silent.

"What happened after that, Maki?" Kaito asked. "I told Ryoma to take it from my room, since it wasn't with me in my research lab. I always keep my door unlocked."

Kokichi mentioned how careless that was, as if he's one to talk.

"And then what happened?" Gonta asked. "I'm not sure. I don't even know if he saw his motive video. When he asked me, he told me he'd let me watch my motive video in return, but I wasn't interested, so I declined."

"So... Maki was the last one who saw Ryoma, a little past midnight." I concluded. "Wait, but we still need more to confirm-" Kiibo began. "Why don't we ask Kokichi?" Shuichi suggested. "He kind of dodged the question earlier. Kokichi, did you tell Ryoma about Maki's motive video? If he did, that would back up Maki's statement."

Kokichi admitted that he told Ryoma about his video and I slapped him in the back of the head. "Why couldn't you just say that earlier?"

Kirumi still suspected Maki, but I don't blame her. It's a life or death situation. Actually, everyone was still suspicious. As they debated, I tried remembering last night. I brought Kokichi back to his room... and I saw a small figure in the dark. Wait, a small figure in the dark!

"Nobody saw Ryoma go to Maki's room last night, right?" "Wait!"

Everyone looked at me once again. "I-I'm not sure if it was Ryoma, but I did see a small figure walking around in the dark. I don't know if it was one of the Monokubs or what, but I know I saw a small figure running around in the dark."

Kiyo was suspicious. "And why were you out that late?"

I explained that I was helping Kokichi get back to his dorm since he was tired and he got bitten by a few bugs. "He was held back in Gonta's research lab until really late. See?" I pulled back Kokichi's sleeves and showed three bug bites he had gotten.

"It took a little while to convince Gonta that Kokichi knew better, right?" Gonta nodded. "It was that late? Gonta not notice." I looked at the Monokubs and Monokuma. "Now, be honest, were you out that late?" All of them shook their heads. "Even bears need beauty sleep you know?" Monosuke said.

"Why'd you sit on that info for so long?" Miu asked. "Well, I thought it was one of the Monokubs, or Monokuma, but now that Maki has said that Ryoma met up with her, it could've been him."

Kiyo sighed. "I guess that means everyone else's alibis no longer matter anymore." I shook my head. "Sure, those alibis don't matter, but I know Gonta, Shuichi, Kokichi, and I were at the dormitory building. I know that because we can back each other up." Kiyo spoke up. "So it had to be the next morning, right? The gym is closed at nighttime."

"Wait, Monokuma." We were slowly brought down to the ground. "Yes?" He said. "It's forbidden for someone to go inside of the gym at night, right?" He nodded. "What about reaching inside?" He laughed. "Of course that's allowed! You're not inside the gym, so you're not breaking the rules!"

"And you can enter the pool area, but not the pool itself?"

"Right again, Y/N!"

"And the window was already open, right Shuichi?" He nodded. "So that's how someone could've put Ryoma into the piranha tank!"

Kirumi eyed me. "But how? The window is far too high for someone to reach." Angie raised her hand. "I know! They used the ladder like Shuichi did!" Shuichi shook his head. "It only reached the window because it was on the stage. If the stage weren't there, it wouldn't reach."

Himiko and Miu tried accusing Gonta, but "Gonta wouldn't be able to do that. I was convincing Gonta to let Kokichi go, and then he came back to the dorms after I put Kokichi to bed. Besides, if someone were to throw the body into the tank, the glass pane would've shattered or shifted."
