《Breaking the Chains》Chapter 25: Sleeping and Beauties

The group rapidly reached the shore of the lake surrounding the Martial House.
The Rhino stopped abruptly on the beach where two senior disciples were standing guard.
“Numbers and reason for leaving.” The guard on the left asked in a bored manner with a pen and a book already in his hands.
Everyone raised their identity tokens and the guard noted everything down at an unhurried pace.
“We’re going out on a mission.” Travis spoke in a leisurely manner, it wasn't his first rodeo after all.
The guard silently nodded and turned to his partner who hadn’t spoken from the beginning. He only tapped his foot on a weird shaped rock next to him and a deep rumble sounded.
It came from the lake and from there emerged two stone walls that turned out to be the side protections of a bridge which stopped its rise while still one meter underwater but it was more than enough for the rhino to cross.
Travis spurred his beast on with a light tap on its side and the flesh tank walked across the bridge at a slower pace than he had until that moment.
To the rhino it was the same as a human walking in knee-high water, it was a bit of a nuisance but still easier than swimming.
And more importantly...safer.
Aegon, finally free from Kuro, looked around as the wolf squeezed himself into the backpack.
The water was crystal clear, one could easily see the bottom of the lake and the fish that roamed there, it was a beautiful sight.
After a while Aegon noticed a shadowy figure swimming at a distance, he couldn't really make out what it was but it was big.
The others also noticed it’s presence and squinted trying to ascertain what it was..

“What the hell is that?” Percy was the first to pose the question.
“Not sure…” Travis answered while squinting his eyes harder.
[That figure looks familiar, I just can't quite put my finger on it…] As the beast got closer Aegon noticed it had a crocodile-like snout. [Oh shit! That's a Kroxy.]
"That's a Kroxy…”
The moment Roy heard that he grabbed his sword’s handle with a grave expression.
Aegon was about to do the same when he noticed the lack of reaction from his seniors.
“They don't seem worried….Don't take out your sword just yet, let's see how they handle this.” Aegon whispered to Roy who nodded and retracted his hand.
By now the Kroxy was already right next to the bridge, yet it did not attack, it just silently swam along the bridge while looking at the rhino and its passengers.
[Why is he not attacking?] He was ready to pose his inner question when Travis decided to answer anyway.
“Don't worry freshmen, he can't attack us, the bridge deters him, he is just seeing us off…” He smirked while speaking the last part.[Of course, if we left the bridge he would see us off to the underworld as well.]
The rest of the crossing was peaceful and they soon reached the shore where they returned to their previous breakneck speed. By now Aegon and Roy had accustomed themselves and not wanting to waste any time jumped right into cultiv…sleeping.
Time passed.....The sun was sinking into the horizon and the seniors of the group were pondering if they should camp in the woods or continue for a few more hours and try to reach a village.
“I think we should camp here in the woods, it's not safe to travel at night, if we make a camp here we can easily have one or two people keeping guard while the others sleep.” Percy nodded to what Travis said.

“But if we reach a village we will definitely be safer, just because we can have someone keeping guard doesn't guarantee that they could warn us in time, plus it's just a few more hours, we would be super unlucky to bump into some strong bandits in such a short period.” In contrast Bella and Linda were hell bent on continuing the journey.
As for Aegon and Roy…they were still sleeping soundly unaware of the topic of discussion.
“It seems we reached an impasse. It's two against two right now so lets just wake up Aegon and Roy and ask for their opinion. If after that we are still at an impasse we can just decide it with a coin toss.” Percy suggested.
Linda, Bella and Travis pondered for a moment and decided it was reasonable.
Turning to the two sleeping beauties Percy was slightly impressed. [How did they manage to sleep so soundly on top of the rhino?]
“Hey, you two, wake up.”
They both blinked, somewhat annoyed and still a bit sleepy.
“Did we arrive already?" A yawn escaped Aegon's mouth while he asked absentmindedly.
“No, but we are discussing if we should camp here for the night or keep going for a few more hours to reach a village, what do you guys think?”
[Was that it? I could have been sleeping.] Somehow Aegon and Roy thought the exact same thing.
Aegon turned to face Roy with an inquisitive look.
Roy answered with a shrug but he also rubbed his lower back a little and stretched his neck.
[Sleeping on this thing is leaving me sore all over too, let's just stop now and sleep on something that doesn't move.]
"Let's stop here, all this riding is leaving me sore, I think we all need a good nap.” He yawned once again while talking.
Linda and Bella were clearly mad but they had agreed to the terms so now they had to comply. They were actually more mad at the fact Aegon had the gall to say they ALL needed a good nap, including him, who had slept the entire way.
[This guy is something else…] was everyone’s collective thought.
Everyone dismounted to set up camp.
Aegon was from the countryside so he set up a fire while the others were setting up camp.
Well. one could call it camp, if one only looked at the right side of the fire where Percy’s, Roy’s and Aegon’s tents were. But if one looked to the left they would be more inclined to call it a makeshift palace, there were three tents bigger than Aegon's room in the Martial House and obviously better furnished.
The less pompous trio could understand the girls need for comfortable accommodation, they were high born after all.
As for Travis, even though his family was rich, he was also a guy, and on top of that, a guy who would probably go to war or fight in devastated battlefields in the future, especially if he wanted to actually get the glory he craved.
[He will have to grow a lot...] The trio nodded disapprovingly while caressing their imaginary beards.

Delve
Summary – Level 1: Delve is an isekai litrpg that follows an average guy who just happened to wake up in a forest one day. He wasn’t summoned to defeat the demon lord or to save the world or anything like that, at least as far as he can tell. The only creature there to greet him was a regular old squirrel. Soon enough, he meets other people, only to discover that he can’t speak the language, and that not everybody immediately trusts random pajama-wearing strangers they met in the middle of the wilderness. Things generally go downhill from there, at least until the blue boxes start appearing. Delve is a story about finding your way in a new, strange, and dangerous world. It’s about avoiding death, figuring out what the heck is going on, and trying to make some friends along the way. It’s not about getting home, so much as finding a new one. Did I mention that there will be math? Summary – Level 2: Okay, but what are you in for, really? Well, this story is supposed to be realistic, or at least, as realistic as a fantasy litrpg can be. The main character doesn’t instantly become an all-powerful god and murder-hobo his way across the universe. Delve is, at its heart, a progression fantasy, but that progression is meant to feel earned. The numbers in this story actually mean something. Everything is calculated, and if you find a rounding error, I expect you to tell me about it. That said, if math isn’t your cup of tea, there is plenty more that the story has to offer. Characters are meant to feel real, and progression isn’t only about personal power; it’s also about allies, connections, and above all, knowledge. Figuring out how the system works is a significant theme. ... What, you want more details? Okay, fine, but this is going to get a bit spoiler-y. Are you sure? Yes! Really sure? I mean, this summary is practically half as long as the first chap– Now! Okay, okay! The main character becomes a magic user, but he takes a route that is not very popular in adventurer culture, namely that of a support. There is a full magic system with various spells, skills, and abilities, but our MC decides that aura magic is the way to go, and that the only stat worth investing in is mana regeneration. Most people at the Adventurer’s Guild think that this makes him a bit of a dumbass, but he’s playing the long game. We’ll see how that works out for him, won’t we? Because of his build, the MC levels up fast, at least compared to normal people. There are no cheats, though, and he is limited in other ways. There are some clear and pretty obvious downsides to his build. That’s what makes it fun, no? Morals? Our MC has them. Again, we’ll see how that works out for him. Realism, remember? Would you be okay with killing someone and looting their body? I sure hope not. POV? The focus is on the main character, but there will be occasional varying perspectives from people around him, or involved in the events related to the main plot. It isn’t going to jump all over the place. Tech is standard medieval stasis. No smartphones, but the MC does have a technical background. Computers and their programming might be involved. There might even be a bit of uplifting down the road, who knows? Anyway, it isn’t the focus. He isn’t going to invent the gun in chapter 1 and change the face of warfare. Romance is not a major focus. Friendships are more the name of the game, though there will be some characters in romantic relationships. There is exploration, though not as much of the geographical nature as you might expect. It is more about exploration of the system and the culture. The pace is slow and detailed, sometimes verging on slice-of-life. The action is meant to be realistic and grounded in the numbers, and it is intended to have meaning beyond simply punching things until they stop moving. The general tone of the story is grey, and some parts can get quite dark. People die. Sometimes, people with names, but not anywhere near GoT level. There is plenty of light, too, though, to balance the darkness. The world is dangerous, but overcoming that danger is why we’re all here, isn’t it? Anyway, if you’ve made it this far through the summary, you clearly like words. I hope you enjoy the story! Cover by Miha Brumec Summary Updated: 2020-06-14
