《Nightborn》Chapter 7

Dear Diary,

I can't believe I agreed to help the king of the south. What would my parents say?

Caden dropped me off at the gas station I worked at. It was about the middle of a normal shift but I knew Cindy would still let me get some hours. Marcy would moan and groan but that wasn't anything new.

On the way over Caden explained how I'd be helping out. Since I was a well-known slayer I had an "in" with the supernatural community. It would be a lot easier for me to get information from them than it would be the southern vampire king. That made sense to me since most of the supernatural community tended to stay with their own species. Caden couldn't just walk into a werewolf bar and expect them to tell him anything. If anything, knowing that Caden wanted the info would make them quieter.

I was in luck. When I walked into the station, Summer Lynn was manning the register. Guess I didn't have to deal with Marcy today. On the other hand, I did have to deal with Dean. He was leaned over and propped up with one elbow on the counter giving Summer Lynn one heck of a smile. Summer Lynn apparently didn't share his same sentiment. She was giving him her death glare. That meant she was good and riled up and Dean was about to get an ear full. Too bad the bell on the door dinged with my entrance, alerting them to my arrival.

They both looked up as I made my way over. I could tell they both had questions for me.

I felt a little awkward seeing Dean after I made a big deal with the texts and then not really needing his help. It was good to know that I could still (sort of) count on him. It was also heartbreaking seeing him again. I just wanted to walk up to him and put my arms around him and just pretend that he didn't just want me for my last name.

Dean took two quick strides and closed the scant distance between us. He cupped my cheek in his hand and pulled me close with the other.

"God Livvy! I've never been so worried in all my life," Dean said as he stared me right in the eye.

He smelled so good. My arms itched to snake around his waist and hold him close for just a little bit. If Summer Lynn wasn't staring a hole through me I'd be tempted to indulge myself just a little.

Summer Lynn had great senses. She marched her tiny body up to us and wedged herself right in the middle. She managed to push Dean back with one pointed finger to the chest.

"I don't know why you'd be worried. You kinda lost that privilege with the breakup!" She enunciated each word with another poke to the chest. "She's only a few hours late for her shift. Ain't nothin' new for Livvy!"

Dean gave me a questioning look over Summer Lynn's head.

Summer Lynn then turned to me. "And just why did that...thing think he could just slink on up in here and charm me with a smile? Asking all 'how is Livvy?' and 'where is Livvy?' Like I'd give this..this.. rat any information!"

She was good and worked up. Summer Lynn was a spitfire and I needed to calm her down so I could pull Dean aside and talk to him. I grabbed her by the hand and pulled her back behind the register.

"Summy, do you think you can watch the store by yourself for a little longer? I need to explain some things to Dean and it would be better if I did it alone...away from customers," I said.

"Yeah, sure," she said smiling at me. Then a bit louder, "You better tell the scum how to get gone and stay gone!"

"Feel better now?" I asked.

"A little. I'll be feelin' peachy keen once you make that loser leave."

I laughed. You'd think that they were the couple to break up. "Just give me ten minutes, okay?"

Summer Lynn nodded with her agreement.

I dragged Dean with me to the stock room so we could talk in private. It also made it where Summer Lynn couldn't eavesdrop.

It had been a little while since I last saw him so I just seemed to stare a little. I told myself to look just until my nerves settled. Monsters I could handle, this, apparently not so much. His shaggy hair fell into his eyes a little and he pushed it back dragging his fingers through the tresses. It left his hair messy but in an adorable way.

"I guess Summer Lynn isn't my biggest fan," he said with a little shrug.

"No, she's not."

"And just why is that?" he said. He took a small step toward me.

I stood my ground. I wasn't going to let Dean back me into a corner.

"You know why," I said. I couldn't help but cross my arms in front of me. We've had this conversation. He knew what he did.

He took one step, then another. There was just a little space left between us.

"But it wasn't like that! Not at all," he said.

"Yeah? Then just how exactly was it?"

He ran his fingers through his hair, again. Mussing it up even more. He let his arm drop in a defeated gesture.

"I just wish I could make you understand," he whispered.

He took the remaining steps left between us, "I could. I know I could. If you would just give me the chance."

Dean wrapped his arms around me pulling me close. He buried his face into my neck. "Please, Livvy. Just give me that chance. I'll make it right."

God help me but I was weak. I wiggled my arms out of their still crossed position and gave in by wrapping my arms around him. We just stood like that for a few moments. Breathing each other in.

Dean straightened himself up and peered down into my eyes.

"Will you forgive me, Livvy? Give me that chance to make things right? To explain? Still, be my girl?"
