Volume 1 Chapter 11 Lowlight Cathedral

Jack’s group did not take much more time to reach the Cathedral of Lowlight. The name was the Cathedral of Lowlight but its size would have qualified it as a small town.

The church occupied a massive size of land, the walls were as tall as mountains, and the bell on top of the building must have had the same size as Jack’s family house.

The money required for the construction of such a structure must have been colossal. Jack wondered how the Church had gathered the amount needed for the assembly of such edifice.

Therio seemed unfazed by the Cathedral and asked Jack to quicken up the pace. The Overseer was greeted with utmost respect by the sentinels and the group was led to a quiet room.

The food on the table at the center of the room seemed like it was worth two of a farmer’s life. The kid was invited to eat as much as he wanted.

As Jack was stuffing himself to the brim, a high ranking came to greet the Overseer.

They seemed like they were quite knowledgeable of each other, the Overseer greeted the man with only so-so respect.

The man started talking first: “So the boy over there is the last one?”

The Overseer responded: “It seems like; the Goddess hasn’t communicated further revelation?”

The high ranking answered: “Nothing, we can seemingly proceed as we wish to.”

The woman said with an authoritative tone: “Put him in the same program as the others, he is not different from them; their strengths will be put where we need it.”

The man approached Jack and said: “Hello, I’m Cardinal Francis, could you tell me your name?”

The boy with a piece of bread still in his hand answered: “Hi, my name is Jack Lynch.”

The man told Jack: “Very well, you will be in my care for the time being.”

Cardinal Francis asked Jack to follow him, as Therio was about to follow them too, the Cardinal’s guard stopped him and sent him off.

Jack didn’t understand why his friend couldn’t come so he asked the good hearted Cardinal who said he would be in his care.

Francis responded by saying that Therio had something more important to do for now.

Jack didn’t want to bother his friend so he did not ask any more questions. The man explained how they had a long walk to do so they couldn’t stop here to talk.

The boy agreed and they started moving towards the closest door.

The look of the Cathedral went without saying, it was beautiful from every aspect, and the paintings were top-notch, likely made by the greatest painters of the last generation.

The stained glass windows were representing the Goddess triumphing over every other fake god. There was no representation of what the Overseer had called the god of the Dream’s Cultist nor of the Crow God.

The gods that were defeated were some that Jack had never heard of; he thought that was maybe due to his lack of intensive education.

The two of them passed by an old pillar, it sent a regular beating heart like sound wave; intrigued Jack stopped walking for a moment.

The Cardinal seeing Jack’s interest spiked, he did an inviting move with his arm; indicating Jack to go touch the pillar.

Jack nodded and approached the pillar, nothing happened until he touched the cold stone.

A voice started talking in Jack’s head: “Hello young fellow, I am the Obelisk, the last wall of the Church of Eryn.”

The surprised Jack responded: “Hello?” “Can I ask you what you are?”

The Obelisk answered: “I was created by the great Goddess to help protect her church. My main body is in the city of Solarim but a little bit of me is in every cathedrals of the continent.”

Jack said: “Wow, I hope we can talk again sometime soon, you say funny things.”

The pillar answered before going silent: “I wish you good luck for your next challenge, faraway my little friend.”

Jack quickly ran back toward the Cardinal who had already started walking to the next gate.

They continued walking in a seemingly endless maze of twists and turns. After a good fifteen minutes of moving through the Cathedral of Lowlight, they arrived at an outdoor stage.

Cardinal Francis used a movement spell of the Light Path to go up to one of the chairs on the balcony.

He transmitted information to Jack, he instructed him to go on the stage and wait until every seat on the balcony was taken.

He waited for a good half an hour, he took the opportunity to gather more Chus, at the same time he was thinking of creating his own personal spell.

After what seemed like an eternity under the sun, every seat was taken. There was Cardinal Francis, someone wearing the same clothing as the good cardinal and the Overseer.

They signalled the guards standing at the door that it was time, and a guard left to do the chore they had been tasked with.

Cardinal Francis spoke up: “You will now have to show us your potential, you don’t have to worry it isn’t a difficult task.”

Jack nodded showing his approval for the trial that was to come.

A chained up man was brought into the courtyard, his brown hair was messy, and his face was red from dried blood. His body was bruised from his head to toes; his flesh was blue from hits.

The unfortunate man was coughing blood from his fresh wounds; blood was still flowing through cuts everywhere on his body.

Jack looked at the audience with a puzzled look.

The Overseer said: “Come on Jack, it’s not difficult to realize what we are asking you to do. Execute the sinner.”

Jack approached the man; he was praying to the Crow God. His face distorted from the pain coming from every place his jailors could touch.

Jack tried to gather up his will, but he wasn’t able. He was not able to kill the man in front of him.

The Overseer called the guards with a disappointed look.

She said: “The kid will go with the three others and for the love of the Goddess, make the sinner disappear from our sight.”

The guards obliged, as they were bringing Jack to another place, the young Saint was able to see the man being pierced by the spear of the guard that was kept on the site.
