《MINDMEN》Chapter five

The way it was explained to Anna, if it all went well, the night wasn't expected to be a long one. It was a simple plan, one that Anna considered to be in three phases. Phase one was staying put till the police officers came. Aside the team of police officers that were yet to arrive, the group was made up of five persons. Gathering a group of five on her side sounded small given the fact that the night could turn out differently, but this was best. Donna couldn't ask for help from everybody she moved with. Just people she trusted. She hadn't even told her parents. Not because she didn't trust them but because she knew they'd call the police (differently from how Sarah did it) and make it public which was the opposite of what her brother wanted. So she had told only her closest friends; Sarah, Anna and Mike and her boyfriend, Jonathan.

Currently, they were at Sarah's house. Precisely in the girl's living room. They had been at the police station earlier though. There they met with Sarah's father, the police captain and Donna told him the full version of the story, the text and the drive (which the police went through) he was asking for. It contained a video of John and a few boys torturing and eventually killing someone whom, from the audio the video provided, was a drug dealer who failed in delivering a huge load of the 'product'.

Although the reason for making the video was unclear, one thing was: John McCormick was drug dealer. One who aided the murder of an individual.

What probably made the video important to the big group the text spoke about and also important enough for the police to make a copy of it, was that it incriminated a big player. Someone the police had been trying to nab but was too protected by money and power for them to do so. Carter Grayson. The man basically had a hand in every shady business that went down in the city. Despite that, they couldn't find any hard enough evidence to put him behind bars. And now, this video not only placed him at the scene of the crime, but one of the boys, called Aiden, who created the video, referred to him as their leader saying: "the bossman is disappointed in you dude."

Anna was pretty sure that was the reason Captain Dunlop agreed to spare his men to help Donna get her brother.

From heading to Donna's home and ransacking the girl's brother's room looking for the drive, to going to the police station and explaining the issue in detail (which took hours), Anna didn't get the chance to go home and she wouldn't have taken it if the opportunity presented itself. Anna had already called Claire to tell her she'd be spending the night at Sarah's place to deal with homework. It wasn't a total lie, they did have maths homework and Mr Randall's research assignment on Redstone Missiles which was related to the excursion they'd be going on. Only they weren't going to do the homework just yet and the real reason she didn't want to want to go home was because, there was a high chance her dad was going to be home today.

On the outside, people loved her family. Even before he became Mayor (it still wasn't clear why he chose to), David Albert had already won the hearts of many in the city by frequently donating to charity, reviving dying businesses and even offering scholarships to financially below-average students. Then, people looked at them as royalty in Redstone and the man's mansion located in north of Redstone was a castle. People still thought of them as high class individuals even though Anna didn't live in the mansion anymore due to it being under reconstruction. But in reality her life never really was like that. The mansion always felt like a prison because her dad never let her leave the place. That ended the moment she started living in the new house. He hardly came home and she started going out more. But if he did come home tonight, it meant she wouldn't be able go back out to protect Sarah and Donna. She was happy today happened the way it did.

She couldn't show that happiness now though. Everyone had a serious look plastered on their face. Donna and the boys were talking about the plan and the part she'd play when they got to the location and Sarah kept pacing about the room commenting on the plan once in a while. The atmosphere wasn't one someone could joke about or in this case smile for no reason.

Speaking of looks, Sarah and Donna had completely changed from what they were wearing earlier. Donna had put on a pair of cargo pants and a plain green T-shirt that matched her blonde hair and Sarah was wearing a hip hugger and a blouse. Jonathan and Mike were basically wearing the same thing: a pair of jeans and a sweatshirt. Only that mike was wearing a blue sweatshirt while the brown haired, blue eyed boy was wearing a grey one.

Meanwhile Anna had taken off the hoodie leaving only the shirt and jeans. She wasn't worried about the glowing eye thing that much... for now. However that worked, she felt sure it wasn't going to happen now.

“Okay this is getting late,” Donna said getting up from the couch in the center of the room. “How long are we gonna wait. The text said eleven pm. It's quarter past ten and the warehouse is on the other side of the city.”

“Okay, calm down,” Sarah replied. “I'm sure they will be here any minute.”

As she said that, they heard a car slowly come to a stop outside of the house. A moment later, there was a knock and Sarah answered the door.

“They're here,” She announced from the door.

“Only two?” Mike asked sounding disappointed as he saw them. Running his hands through his thick long hair he added, “I don't see how a number this small is going to help.”

“Kid, you should be grateful the police is taking this serious,” one of them spoke as they entered the house. It was the taller of the men who spoke. He was a bald, dark skinned man unlike the other police officer beside him. They were both dressed in civilian attire and looked equally annoyed about being here. “You should be grateful son. Be grateful.”

“I'm Officer Brantley,” the other police officer spoke rather politely. “And my partner here is officer Payne. We've been sent here to help.”

“Thank you sir,” Sarah replied. “Sorry about my friend, he's a little on the edge.”

“It's okay. We should get going,” the man replied and walked out of the house.

They moved out of the house and into the vehicle. The car was fairly large. Large enough to carry them comfortably and with enough space to ensure that they sat without excessive body contact. Still being cautious, Anna sat closest to the left car door so she could alternate between looking out the window or staring at her phone screen.

The drive was much like the one she had had earlier today. She hardly contributed to any of the conversations going on, despite the fact that a lot was being discussed. Her friends were asking questions about where they were going and what they were going to do when they got there.

They were almost there now. Anna could see less skyscrapers and tall buildings. The warehouse was not too far ahead.

“Hey,” Donna said to Anna as she nudged her.

“Hey,” Anna replied, turning her attention from the window to the girl beside her.

“You okay? You've been staring at the window since we got in the car.”

“I'm just thinking.”

“About?”

“Nothing serious. Just random thoughts.” After a pause, Anna asked, “What about you, you okay? I'm worried about you. I mean you just found out your brother wasn't the heroic guy you thought he was and now you're putting yourself in danger trying to save him.”

“Yeah, you'd think I'd feel that way, Feel angry or disappointed but I don't.”

“Yeah?”

“Yeah. A part of me does feel that way... but I just want him home. This will give my parents closure at least. I'm really glad he's alive and hopefully this...” She said lifting the drive, “would help bring him home. The past few month's been hell.

“He'll come home.” Anna assured the girl. “I promise.”

“Thanks.”

Soon after, they arrived at the warehouse. The area was quiet. Dark too. It was really perfect for meetings like this.

Criminals really knew their spots, she thought.

They arrived on time. The text said eleven o'clock and with the time being ten minutes to, they had time to go over the plan. The first phase of the plan was waiting for the police officers and gathering the group. The second was getting to the warehouse. Now that both were completed, it was left with phase three: bringing John home and taking him into witness protection for the time being. If things went sideways, the police officers would step in to handle it.

Seeing the size of the team they sent them, Anna was beginning to doubt that they could 'handle it' if they were attacked by a large group.

Donna, Mike and Jonathan came down from the vehicle while the police officers remained in the car. As planned, they would go into the warehouse while the police officers, Anna and Sarah waited outside.

“Here,” Officer Brantley said giving Donna a small black rectangular box. “Double tap the button in the middle and we'd get an alert here in the car that you're in trouble. At the right side of the box there's an audio record button. Tap once to start recording and twice to stop it.”

Anna understood this part of the plan but she wasn't comfortable with it. Donna, Mike and Sarah were faces John knew and trusted most. They had the best chance of convincing him to come home and not run away again. She understood that but what if it wasn't John that was in there.

“Excuse me sir, why can't we all go in there?” Anna asked frowning. “It is much safer and it is the reason we're here.”

“Listen Miss Albert,” Officer Payne said, obviously recognising her as the Mayor's daughter. “Aside the emotional effect, this way keeps it realistic to whoever might be in there if it isn't Mr McCormick. A girl walking into an unknown warehouse with her boyfriend and her boyfriend's best friend sounds believable because she's supposed to be scared and look for help from friends. But a group of six friends going to a warehouse shows you're looking for trouble. Especially when two of those friends are the daughters of public figures.”

“That makes sense,” Sarah said.

Seeing the look Anna gave her, she continued, “It does! Besides they have that device with them. Nothing bad could happen. ”

“Exactly,” the police officer said.

Anna sighed.

“We'll be fine Anna,” Jonathan said assuring her.

“It's eleven o'clock,” Donna said checking her phone. “We should get going.”

Anna really didn't like how this played out, she couldn't protect them like this. They went into the warehouse while Anna and Sarah rested on the bonnet of the car, a few metres away from the warehouse.

Anna checked her phone periodically. It was taking a while and she was getting worried. Rather than complain again to the officers about it taking too long, she decided to check by herself. Turning her back to Sarah, who was busy on her phone, she closed her eyes and concentrated on her powers. Anna knew she could hear long distances. She did it that night. All she had to do was concentrate.

Before the super hearing came in, she began feeling around the area. The force she used to lift things was all over the place and it had a soft touch on everything. Anna could feel every object and every person in the force. The range was quite long, probably a few miles and for every inch, she could feel the detail it carried.

It was a lot to take in.

But Anna knew what she wanted to do. Concentrating harder, she was able to single out the spot she wanted to feel and listen to. Slowly it became all she felt and she soon began feeling the space within the warehouse.

Mostly it was empty except for boxes lying around here and there. One thing caught her attention though, there were eight persons in there. Five figures surrounded three persons on their knees. She felt the drive in Donna's pocket and the girl was on her knees. Anna didn't need someone to tell her who the other two persons were. But why didn't she notify the officers in the car? It was then she felt the shattered pieces of the box on the floor. All of a sudden there was a cough and someone beside Donna dropped. Before she could debate within herself what that cough meant, she heard a deep voice speak.

“What were you thinking, that'd you'd see your brother again and you'd take him with you? Dude's long gone and you're next.” It was a gun. There was someone in there holding a gun with a silencer about to kill Donna.

“They're in trouble,” She said as she opened her eyes.

“Huh?” Sarah asked confused.

Anna didn't answer. Instead she ran towards the warehouse. As she did, she could hear Sarah and the police officers call her back but she didn't stop. She knew what they didn't. She knew her friends were going to die if she didn't get into the warehouse. Eyes glowing or not, she was not going to let whoever was in there do that.

“Say good night bitch,” she heard the voice say as she got to the entrance of the warehouse.

And the cough was heard again.

She was closer and this time, she could feel the bullets movements and direction. It was as though time was on slow motion as she felt the bullet tear through sheets of air on it's course to Donna's forehead.

So she thickened the sheets.

Whatever force she felt when she used her telekinetic powers, she gathered it in that one direction the bullet was heading for. And when it did, it stopped, hanging in the air. Held by the invisible force.

Before they could understand what had just happened, Anna attacked. With a violent wave of her hand, she sent the man flying.

“Good night...” Anna said, her voice deep dark and somewhat distorted.

“Bitch.”
