《Aurelion》Chapter 12

"You have good eyes." The old man said when he saw me staring at a black throwing knife. The knife was short and thin. There was also a long yellowish crystal craved into it that goes through the middle of the knife. I don't know why, but this weapon seemed to be calling me.
"This weapon is called Stardust, the pillar of god. It came from a distance land. The ring next to it is also part of the set." If he never mentioned the ring, I wouldn't have noticed at all. It had a small crystal that looked similar to the one in the dagger. The material of it, I assumed, is Mupryx and Dreirium.
Mupryx is a rare element in this universe, but many people don't know the true value of it. My daggers were made from a mix of Mupryx, Titanium, and Skrynium. Mupryx is a metal that can collect and release mana. When combined with Skrynium, it enables its user to insert magic and mana into it and let's the weapon cast it.
As for Dreirium, it's no where as rare as Mupryx. Many people use it for it's ability to focus magic and mana into a target.
I believed that combination was used to focus mana into the the crystal. This meant that the knife and rings should be magically connected and are magical weapons, although I still don't know what abilities they have.
"Can I have a closer look at the knife? I would like to hold it"
The man took out the knife and passed it to me. With the knife is my hand, I couldn't believe how firm and comfortable the grip was. The knife was very well balanced to give out optimum power and accuracy. He took out the ring too and asked me to put it on, so I did.

"There's a target over there. You can give it a throw and see if you like it or not." The man said as he pointed to a thump of wood.
I pulled my hands back a little. Then I simply flicked the knife and it went flying. I didn't put in too much power into the throw, but the knife flew extremely quickly and smoothly nonetheless. Before I even learnt of its abilities, I have already fallen in love with it.
"Now, open your hands wide and point your palm at the knife. Focus your thoughts and order it to return to you"
I did as the man said and the knife suddenly flew right back at me. I caught it in my hand perfectly. It wasn't anything too special, but it was am extremely useful ability nevertheless, especially when it comes to fighting monsters. It's just what I am looking for.
I studied the knife in my hand a little more carefully. Everything about it was prefect, but there was just a feeling. It felt like it's telling me that something is missing.
"Sir, does the knife have a twin set?" The words just leaked out of my mouth before my brain even processed it.
"Actually..... Yeah, it does. The twin of the knife is called Darksky, the pillar of hell. It was... How do I out it..... Stolen.... Yeah, it was stolen.... By a group of people. They are still in the village." The man said.
"Can you tell me where this group is?" I asked. A part of me just really wanted to get it back for some reason, to probably reunite both of the knives back together.
"I'll the ya if you buy Stardust, then you can go on your jolly way to retrieve the twin knife if you want. It's just 30K credits." The man said as he smiled at me like he hit the jackpot.

"Err... Sorry... You see.... I don't have enough money for it......" I said truthfully. I only had about 150 credits, no where close to 'enough'. The man's face turned grumpy. I quickly said "Is there any commissions I can do to get it?" I don't know why, buy I'm just not willing to give up on getting the twin knives.
He stared at me, then his face turned bright again. He told "you're in luck. The group that took Darksky also took something else of mine. Go and retrieve a crystal called the Eagle's spark. It has a figure of an eagle inside of it. When you bring it back to me, I'll consider trading. But, I'm leaving the day after tomorrow, so you better be quick."
I accepted the commission and returned Stardust. He showed me the hideout on the map of the village. It seemed that the hideout was located at the outer edge of the village.
When I finally left the tent, it was dark out. I walked along the dimly lit road and got to the tavern. My friends were waiting there for me.
"Hey Roland! What took you so long?" Radolf shouted when he saw me.
"Sorry, I lost track of time. They had some beautiful looking throwing knives." I replied
We entered the tavern together and sat at a corner. The woman me and Kishi met yesterday came over and placed a cup of beer and a small slice of apple pie for each of us on the table. "It's on the house, as thanks for yesterday."
We spent the rest of the night listening to Char telling stories of the type of monsters he faced. He wasn't really trying to show off, but I felt like he was just trying to think of something to talk about to fill in the void. After that, we booked rooms in the tavern to stay in for the night. Char and Juno had to go to another Inn in the village because the tavern rooms were fully booked for the night. Just like that, another night has passed by.

8 316The Paths of Magick
Credits: Story by Xcaliburnt. Cover Art by @Bervolart. Magick, the power to bend the laws of reality. All because of a mystical substance known as mana. Mages follow the Paths to achieve power, for there is no more addictive chase. Each Path winds and twists, forcing mages through the flames of adversity and challenge. Though the operative word is "path", the reality is far less straightforward. Instead of a road, Paths are like the branches of world trees, erupting into the heavens, intertwining, and ending in sharp snaps. Only the strongest reach the sky. There are several Paths, and many Ways to walk them—variations of the same Path, and like the stars, they are endless. Magick is the sacred flame that scours the fat, rendering the truest self. Superfluous flesh melting away to show the skeleton of one's being. A chance for ascension—apotheosis. Though not every mage works to godhood, if they survive long enough, It is inescapable. Witness the lives of those that tread the knife's edge of self-destruction. Each one intertwined in their search for answers, revenge, and, most of all: power. These individuals have all lost something precious—irreplaceable—and In search of filling the void left behind, they have taken up the mantle of a mage. Per aspera ad astra. Ad mortem vel divinitatis. (Through adversity to the stars. To death or divinity.) There is no consistent release schedule except my consistent inconsistency. Besides, there’s like a thousand pages worth of content, how can—you already read it? Goddamn. Oh, and there is a very long hiatus between volumes as I intend to edit and rewrite a lot. What to Expect: This story is progression fantasy, so expect a healthy dose of training. It's also heavy on slice of life, and it isn't entirely overarching-plot-driven. Expect characters to live their lives, and not always be on some quest to save the world. There's a lot of magic theory and discussion about it in the story. So, if you don't like impromptu lessons on sorcerous theory by traveling monster slayers, this might not be for you. But if you do like it, rejoice! For there is a lot of it. This is also heavy on prose, purple as a bruised eye. I use outdated, uneccesarily collegiate-level terms and play around with the writing style just for the heck of it. I find it fun to wax and wane poetic, and that might grate on you—I don’t plan to change this aspect of the Paths much if at all. Onto the viewer discretion is advised parts: This is grim-dark/ grim-heart. Take the tags seriously. There will be combat scenes that are brutal and horrifying. Fights to the death tend to be. This is a tale about medieval mercenaries (quite literal killers for hire), man-eating monsters, and eldritch gods beyond the material plane. Beside that, there will be traumatic events that are best left unread. I do not detail certain acts I find heinous enough, instead leaving some parts unwritten but still alludded to if not outright stated; there is simply no graphic narration thereof. This is not for the faint of heart.
