《My Demons》Chapter Two

Silas frowned as his belt refused to buckle. He was in a hurry. He had been watching over Tess at her track meet, making sure nothing would go wrong, as so many things could. Towards the end of the meet he realized he had left his sword up in Heaven and had gone back to get it. Now, in the most inconvenient of times, the belt felt like giving him trouble. His golden eyes smoldered with worry.
What if she fell and broke her leg...or another runner attacked her? He shook his head, Gabriel had always warned him not to worry about his human.
"They aren't completely helpless without us." The angel had said with a chuckle.
"Oh yeah, sure Gabriel, like the time I left Tess for two seconds and she got a bloody nose." Silas huffed aloud. He had felt guilty for days when she had gotten that bloody nose as a ten year old. Tess had been throwing a baseball around with Levi. Silas had turned around hearing a branch crack and when he turned back Tess was holding her nose and crying her eyes out. Silas groaned at the memory, it made his chest ache. After that day he had kept a closer watch over her, never leaving her alone. Excluding when she got changed and used the bathroom or the shower, then that would have been...well creepy.
I won't disappoint her ever again. He vowed it daily to himself, even though she couldn't hear the him. With that lingering thought, he stretched out his white feathery wings. One common weakness among angel's was the fondness for their wings. They were an angels pride and joy. He flicked his fingers, making the wings translucent before turning himself invisible. He jumped down onto a cloud with ease, white smoke curling around his ankles as he landed. Walking to the edge of the cloud and looking down from the sky, he scanned the road for Tess's family vehicle. He quickly spotted it, an ugly yellow Chevy truck. He never understood humans taste in color, but a least it made Tess's family easy to follow. He took a deep breath, gathering up strength. No matter how many times he jumped from the clouds it always felt like his first. He folded his wings and stepped off. Anyone who would've seen him would think he was crazy; it was like walking off the edge of a cliff for humans. Silas closed his eyes in bliss as the wind tore at his skin with vigor. His hair undoubtedly would be windblown by the time he landed. He plummeted toward the Earth head first in a downward spiral. Silas opened his shining eyes, feeling the change in air temperature as he came closer to Tess's truck. Slowing his descent, Silas quickly flipped upright, sticking his feet out in front of him. He opened his wings as they caught the air. His feet touched the bed of the truck with not so much as a creak. Silas smiled.

"Another perfect landing if I do say so myself." He chuckled, smoothing down his mess of brown hair. Silas looked through the back window, knowing Tess would have no idea he was there. Her countenance appeared happy and yet angry towards her father. Silas sighed, he knew Tess was not her father's biggest fan and neither was Silas. The man always seemed distant and uncaring to Tess's feelings. Silas could remember countless nights Tess would sit in her room, tears streaming down her face as another argument with her father would transpire. As Tess's guardian ,Silas often felt his anger burn against her father, but he knew he could do nothing about unless he wanted to be cast out of Heaven.
"Can't you just be happy that I won a race for once in your life?" Tess was saying to her father.
"Tess, you aren't pushing yourself like you could. I know you can beat every single one of the seniors at any school, on any given day. You need to try harder." Her father responded lowly. Tess looked taken aback.
"I need to try harder? I work hard every week to try and beat my personal record!" She raised her voice.
"Tess." Her mother reprimanded softly. Frowning Tess turned, laying her head on her forearm and staring up at the stars. She gazed out the back window of the truck, her grey eyes reflecting an internal storm. Silas looked right back into her eyes, feeling her anger and hurt.
If only we were allowed to comfort our humans... Silas thought downheartedly. The thought was quickly cast aside and Silas stood up rigidly. The driver down the road was weaving badly and Silas immediately knew he was drunk. Silas quickly jumped onto the truck roof, propelling himself off of it. He darted forward with propulsion from his wings. Silas felt his heart beat speed up as he neared the impaired driver. He looked completely wasted. Flying to the side of the vehicle, Silas recognized it would take a lot of his strength to keep this car going straight on the road, but he wouldn't have time for any other action. The roar of the yellow Chevy truck began to buzz in his ears. He braced his hands onto the side of the car and began pushing. His muscles began to burn as the driver kept trying to weave back. Silas yelled in pain as his arms pushed the vehicle on the right path. Tess's Chevy appeared quicker than he had anticipated and Silas flapped his wings trying to get the driver over. The smell of car exhaust flooded his nose, choking all senses. There was the sound of a car horn and then Silas screamed as the yellow truck clipped him in the back, knocking him off the drunk driver's car. Silas felt a falling sensation before he hit the ground. His teeth chattered when his head clashed with the road and his left arm burned as skin was torn from it. He ground his teeth together, fighting the pain while he scrambled off the road. His eyes scanned the road, seeing the fading image of Tess's vehicle traveling down the road unharmed. Silas let out a sigh of relief that turned into a groan as he collapsed into the ditch. Pushing, he tried to get himself off the ground, but flopped down in vain.

"You're an idiot." Came a girl's voice behind him. Silas shifted his head to locate the source of the voice.
"How about you help me, Diana? Did you consider that?" He seethed through clinched teeth.
"Fine." Responded the female angel. She landed on the ground beside him; her raven black hair reflected the moon's beams. She grabbed his arm and helped him up.
"Thanks." Silas breathed.
"Don't thank me yet." Diana said, unfolding her wings and shooting towards the clouds, dragging Silas in tow.
