《THE MAN WHO FOUGHT GOD》19. Imbuing An Affinity

Joseph found himself in the boss’s tent with many eyes on him. “Joseph, I want you to show me exactly what you did and how you did it.” The boss motioned and a man brought over a spare axe handle to Joseph.
Joseph grabbed the handle with one hand and focused his magic in the other. Once he had a sizable amount gathered in his hand, he placed it to the handle, forcing it into it. They all looked at Joseph with bated breath. “It's done.”
“What that's it?” The mage ran over and grabbed the handle, swinging it around. He then tossed it to the Boss.
The Boss grabbed each end with one hand and placed his foot in the middle of it. “Rahhh!” He used all of his might, but he was not able to break it. He then took a knife out and put it to the handle. Pushing it hard into it and sliding it down its length. Not a single shaving of wood came off. Everyone in the room slowly looked towards Joseph. No one speaking except for the Boss, “How long have you been able to do this?”
“The first time I did it was today on my armor. When I went to test my armor, that's how the battle axe handle broke. So I made him a new one and now we're here.” Joseph couldn't help but tap his leg with all the eyes on him.
“You don't seem to understand what you've done. As we know it, magic can only be used through the body whether internally or externally. However, some great few magic masters have been able to imbue some objects with magic. We call these objects magical items. That is what you just did.” The boss tossed the handle to Joseph.

Catching it out of the air Joseph responded, “But don't magical items let you use affinity's that you otherwise wouldn't be able to? This handle cannot do that. It can't do anything. It's just stronger.”
“We have so few magical items, not because we don't have masters of affinity's, but because it is such A hard task to imbue an object with any mana at all. Putting an affinity to it is the easy part. You have managed to imbue this handle with reinforcement magic.”
Joseph could only look at the boss. ‘This doesn't make any sense. Why are they making such a big deal out of it? I understand that not many people can imbue objects with mana but if you have no affinity's, what uses it?’
The Boss saw the confusion on Joseph's face, “If you can imbue wood with reinforcement magic. You can imbue anything with magic.”
“I've only ever done it to wood.”
The mage jumped into the conversation, “So you've tried it before?”
Joseph looked at the floor, “Well, not exactly.”
The Boss stood up walking over to Joseph while pulling back his shirt sleeve. With it pulled back he unclipped a small gauntlet and handed it to Joseph. “I want you to try imbuing this with your magic.”
“Boss are you crazy? What if he breaks it?” The men present protested but were ignored.
Joseph began to gather his magic and his hand, but the Boss yelled out. “No, not here! We'll do it out away from the tents In case you trigger some earth magic.”
Joseph now sat out in the woods with the gauntlet in his hand. ‘Here goes nothing.’ Joseph poured his magic into it. “It's blocked.” He tried to force it, but it felt as if it was hitting a wall. That's When he felt something change about his magic. Even though he had just started using magic not too long ago, it did not feel foreign to him. It felt as if it was a part of his body. And that's why when he felt this change in it, it caused him to throw the gauntlet. He looked at the gauntlet from a distance while feeling his hand to make sure It was still his.

Picking the gauntlet back up, Joseph began to try again. He felt his magic hit that invisible wall and when it began to change he resisted the urge to let go of the gauntlet. He felt his mana begin to pour into the magic item while at the same time he felt something reach in and touch him.
The Boss watched as Joseph came out of the woods. He was eager to see if the boy was able to do anything to the magic item, while at the same time also terrified that the boy may have done something to the magical item. “So how did it go?”
Joseph handed him the gauntlet, “I honestly don't know, I think I was able to put some of my magic into it, but then—"
The boss looked at Joseph concerningly, “Then what? What happened?”
“Boss I think it put magic in me. No not magic it's different. it's like it put a type of shape that magic can be in me. So I don't have the magic but I know how to make the shape.” Joseph had his eyes closed imagining it in his mind.
The Boss looked towards the mage, “is this making any sense to you?” The mage shook his head signaling he had no idea what the boy was talking about. “It's all right Joseph, why don't you go get some rest. I'm sure that's enough for today.”
Joseph walked away from The Boss lost in thought. As soon as he got to his tent he grabbed one of his gauntlets. He imagined the shape of the magic that was in the boss’s gauntlet. He sat there trying to make the shape in his mind. ‘I-I’ve got it’ Joseph then push the shape onto his gauntlet. When the shape was on it he poured his magic into it, filling up the shape as much as he could. eventually he felt his magic disappear and he opened his eyes. Placing the gauntlet on his arm he stood up in shock.
“That was The Boss’s earth magic item, wasn’t it” Joseph reached out towards the ground. Spikes began to protrude from the ground. Smiling to himself he thought, ‘I probably shouldn’t tell them about this. Considering how much they freaked out over the reinforcement magic.’ Joseph took his knife and scratched a line on it so he knew which gauntlet it was before going to sleep
