《THE MAN WHO FOUGHT GOD》4. Claiming Territory

Three months later

Joseph stands in front of a cave. His animal pelt coat is in tatters. He has fastened wooden sticks around his forearms, the ends near his elbows were sharpened. His hair is a long, matted mess he held a primitive spear in his left hand. During these months he has been training with the white wolf. Though from the wolf's perspective Joseph is probably just a playing partner.

Today was different from the past three months. During their training, they had run into a bear's territory more than once but never the bear. Now Joseph had found the bear's layer. Joseph now stood in front of it with adrenaline running through his veins.

His plan? Kill the bear and gain a place to live out of the elements while also gaining a new coat.

"You've got my back right, White?" Reaching over to his right he petted the white wolf. White could smell the bear's scent coming out of the cave and seem focused and ready to fight. Almost ignoring Joseph's pets completely. Though Joseph considered it hard and grueling training. Playing with White every day had grown their relationship considerably in a short time. They ate, sleapt, hunted, and now fought together.

After one final pet, Joseph stood tall and began walking forward, clutching his spear. White followed right behind him.

'If we're lucky we can get an attack off before the bear notices we're here.'

Sneaking through Joseph was careful not to make a sound. Naturally, as a wolf, White's steps were completely silent. This was something that Joseph had grown to envy, especially right now, but in everyday life for them. White had natural instincts and characteristics that she relied on and benefited from every day. Though Joseph had been blessed by God, who he despised, it didn't help him in everyday life. As for his power, he couldn't use it even if he wanted to, for he didn't know what it was.

Thinking to himself about their difference in ability Joseph came to a conclusion. 'If it wasn't for White I don't think I would have ever had a chance.' Despite his envy, he had no malice towards the wolf.

Bringing his mind back to reality, or rather, it was brought back to reality by the enormous sleeping bear he was now looking at. Joseph couldn't help but stare in awe at the giant creature that was easily four times his size.

'I'm not sure if this was the best idea. If we pull it off it's a high reward... but at what cost.' while Joseph was thinking to himself and hesitating White was not. The wolf stayed low to the ground as it moves forward. Joseph realizing there was no going back readied his spear. He knew his best chance was to strike at the same time as White.

White slipped around to the back of the bear and homed in on its neck. Whenever Joseph and white fought each other the wolf always went for the throat. This was no different. Once White was in position Joseph waited for White's tell. Just before White would strike, its tail pointed to the sky.

Joseph brought his spear back in an underhanded grip, ready to throw it with all his might.

Tap.

Joseph felt his spear hit something and stop. 'The wall!'

The bear's eyes shot open a second before White's teeth dug into its neck.

RAHHHHHH!!

The bear stood straight up with White holding on to its neck and White's claws digging into the bear's back. Joseph had been thrown off by his spear contacting the wall and had not released his spear. The bear seeing Joseph in front of it, ignored White's attack and charged Joseph. Joseph brought his spear to hip height and pressed the back of it against the wall. As the bear closed in Joseph didn't move.

'This is my only option!'

The bear noticing the spear stayed on all fours instead of getting up on its hind legs once again.

"NO!" Joseph cried out, realizing his plan to have the bear impale itself wouldn't work if it stayed low. However, he didn't have time to adjust. It was too late.

White hearing him cry out made the final move. Twisting Its head and pushing off with its feat White ripped a chunk out of the bear's back neck. The pain caused the bear to shoot up trying to reach a White that had already pushed off of it. Thanks to that the spear went right into its underside going in halfway before breaking off against the wall. The spear caused the bear's trajectory to miss left of Joseph.

"AHHHH!" Jumping Joseph elbowed the bear's backside, causing the sharp end of the sticks wrapped around his forearms to dig into the bear's backside. However, Joseph was still only a twelve-year-old boy so his weight didn't sink them in too far. Even having half a spear in its underside it whipped around throwing Joseph against the wall. Joseph bounced off the wall and hopped back to his feet, this wasn't the first time he had been slammed. White had thrown him into trees many times during their bouts. Standing back up he raised his arms as the bear slashed at him. Its claws were sharp enough to tear through the wooden sticks protecting Joseph's arm but, Joseph was too light and was thrown back by the blow.

The bear stood on its hind legs roaring at Joseph. That's when White attacked its left heal. An audible snapping sound rang out through the cave and the bear fell to the left under its own weight. Turning the bear tried to catch itself with its front paw but couldn't support its falling weight. It fell to the ground on its stomach, lodging the spear even deeper. White resumed its attack on the bear's neck, staying around its back to avoid the bear's sharp claws. Biting and ripping flesh relentlessly.

Joseph grabbed the half of the spear that wasn't inside the bear. Using it he stabbed the throat of the bear from just outside the bear's reach. The sound of blood mixing and bubbling with the bear's breathing lasted longer than Joseph expected. Finally, the sound stopped, signifying the bear's death.

Joseph dropped to his knees shaking. “I almost died, again." Trying to calm himself he felt a familiar wet feeling on his neck. White was pushing its snout against his neck. looking at the solid white wolf with a blood-red outline around its mouth, Joseph was able to regain his calm.

Placing his hand on White's head Joseph smiled, "WE DID IT!"

White jumped back because of Joseph's sudden shout in the cave. White stared at Joseph as if he had just lost his mind. That’s at least how Joseph interpreted the face of the wolf.

"I...I'm sorry. I got carried away." Joseph smiled brightly showing White he was fine. "Have you ever had bear before?"
