Chapter 1 – Blood Rain
Author’s Note- Sorry if it’s boring right now, **** goes down later, but currently, I have to set the story up and build some character. Like digging holes. They build character right? Also, since this is my first story, most people don’t know that I am stupidly descriptive of scenes, so if you want a straightforward, action only story… Uhh… sorry. In addition, at the end of every chapter, I like to put fictional pieces of writing, read it if you like background information. Any resemblances to real world people, events or objects are completely coincidental.
Enjoy!
--* Fenlei City, Grinn Shai High *--
A monotone voice echoed throughout the classroom as the students stared ahead with eyes covered by a cloud of boredom. Some of them had zzz’s floating above their heads as they rested on their table. It was a very dismal atmosphere, yet the professor lecturing did not seem to notice.
“…and so, due to the peace treaty between the World Nations and the E.L.E.C State, the Frozin Empire could not threaten any of their territories. The two superpowers could not threaten the Frozin Empire either, nor did they want to, since the ice caps do not hold the resources that they need. In the end, the world fell into a temporary peace,” the professor droned, his voice lingering in the air.
A brown haired boy just sat at the corner of the room, his eyes ignoring the teacher and staring outside through the window. A simple glance outside did not reveal much at all, as a thick cloud of smog filled the air.
*Riiiiinnnggggg!*
A shrill sound shrieked throughout the school, signifying the end of the day. The clutter of chairs replaced the tired voice in the air as students stood up from their chairs and began to go about their personal activities.
As the doors of the building exit opened to the courtyard, a rotten smell rushed into the facility; the youths’ noses scrunched as it invaded their nostrils, yet no one voiced any complaint. They were too used to it.
Enduring the smell, the students walked out and began to separate. As the group of students walked out, the brown haired boy suddenly stopped in the middle of the courtyard, and stared up into the sky. Ignoring the crowd of students who stared at him strangely, his red eyes examined the space above him acutely.
*drip*…
A crimson drop fell on his nose, his eyes narrowing as he wiped it off his face.
*drip… *drip*…
More crimson drops fell from the sky, each one penetrating the thick smog in the air. Soon, the dripping escalated into rain, as more and more drops descended from the sky. The smog that used to fill the air was shredded into small wisps of pollution.
*drip… *drip*…*drip… *drip*…*drip… *drip*…
Pools of crimson began to gather on the ground as blood covered students who began to scream in horror as they ran for cover.
A high pitch noise suddenly covered the city, “Attention citizens, blood has begun to rain upon the whole Tripp Region, please proceed with caution as it may contain unknown pathogens. Please stay inside your residence or any cover and avoid touching, drinking or interacting with the blood rain. The World Nations' scientists have started examining the liquid, and will announce the results within an hour. Please proceed with caution until further noticed,” an announcement proceeded.

The brown haired boy snapped from his trance, and quickly followed behind the students who were rushing back towards the school building. As the boy entered, fervent conversations entered his ears.
“… pathogens!? We could be infected right now, and we wouldn’t be able to do anything about it for an hour?” a panicked girl cried, her eyes dripping with tears. Her previously white uniform was now covered in crimson and stuck to her curvy body. Several boys stared at her with lecherous eyes.
“In the first place, why did it rain blood?” a bespectacled boy questioned, though no one vied to respond.
Ignoring the other students, the brown haired boy found an empty space and sat down on the floor quietly.
...
A loud noise aroused the attention of the students, “Attention citizens, through thorough examination, we have determined that the Blood Rain does not have any negative impacts to humans, though long-term study is still required. However, the blood is now causing major problems to agriculture and livestock. By the order of the National Military, we declare international food rationing. We expect you to comply.”
Students erupted into discussion.
“Food rationing?! Are you kidding me? Food is already expensive as hell, and yet they begin to ration it? What is going on…” one of them questioned.
“No use thinking about it, since the rain won’t kill us right now, I’m going back to my house and try to stockpile food before the rationing actually begins,” a student declared as he walked away. Many others stood and followed him out of the school.
“Hey, Nik, you coming with us?” someone asked. The brown-haired boy looked up; his red eyes stared at the person in front of him.
“Yeah, sure,” Nik replied. Nik Morris, one of the school’s top scholars and athletes. Despite his body's fragile looking frame, the boy was capable of reacting instantaneously and commit calculations at light speed.
Stepping out of the building, a cover of red immediately fell upon them; the smell of iron had long since replaced the smell of pollution.
The group of six people, four boys and two girls, walked down the crowded street, umbrellas hung over their heads. After all, even if the rain won’t kill you, why would you want to be covered in it?
As the group walked down the small road, chatter sounded out from the students.
“So Nik, why do you think the Blood Rain occurred? Was it magic? Or maybe the Frozin Empire is up to something…” one of the boys speculated, his eyes glinted with a hint of curiosity.
“Maybe it’s Divine Punishment…” Nik replied shortly, a bitter look filled his face along with a look of certainty.
“Hooh… care to explain?” another boy asked as the rest of the group listened closely.
“Scroll of Larac, 9:48: Man has overstepped their bounds. Destroying the world that they live in, corrupting the processes we have set upon the laws of Nature. Let their sins be washed away by the blood of their kin, may the skies turn red and crimson fall. Seven Challenges, Seven Keys. Only through punishment can they be forgiven,” he replied, recalling the ancient scroll.

“You’re explaining this with a line from an old scroll? Hahaha… though it does seem quite accurate…” one of the girls laughed.
“Well, it’s just a theory,” Nik stated.
“Anyways, where do you guys want to go? I want to get out of this rain already,” a boy questioned.
“Mall?” the girl asked.
“Mall.” The other replied.
“Hah… fine, let’s go to the mall. Nik, coming with us?” the boy asked, unwilling to let Nik go without suffering the mall with two women. The boy simply nodded.
…
Four mountains of bags trudged along the street, avoiding puddles of red. Alongside them were two girls with content faces, a pink blush of satisfaction on both their cheeks.
“Guys, we’re almost to my house, you can drop it all off there, and then we can hang out,” one of the girls declared.
After a few more minutes of walking, the company had arrived in front of a massive gate.
“Huh? Strange… Where is the guard?" the girl questioned.
Filled with suspicions, one of the girls pushed the iron gate open and stepped into the property. The others followed shortly.
“Ahhh----!” the girl screamed as she stared at the manor's garden.
A mass of wriggling plants were collected in the middle of the garden, a sheet of crimson covering it. Every few seconds, it would throb, just like a beating heart. Surrounding the plant heart were the corpses of many maids and guards, their bodies were just a collection of skin and bones. It was as if life was sucked out of them.
Suddenly, the ground began to vibrate. Before the girl could react, a rata vine appeared from the ground and pierced her head, a spray of blood and brain matter covered the others.
“AAHHhh!” another terrified screech shot forth. As if reacting to the sound, the ground vibrated much more violently as five more vines erupted from the earth.
“Run!” one of the boys screamed, immediately abandoned the bags of goods and ran towards the gate.
Unwilling to let prey escape, three vines shot towards the running boy and impaled him. Sprays of blood exploded forth as three holes appeared at the boy's torso. His body fell to the ground, lifeless.
Seeing their friend’s fate, the others stood still, unwilling to move. They watched the vines wrap around the dead body and drag it back towards the heart, where the headless girl had been dragged towards as well.
“Everyone, on the count of three, you all rush towards the gate. If we stay, we’ll die for sure. If we all run together, some of us might get out. One…” one of them whispered, his voice barely audible.
The vines all stabbed into the bodies of the headless girl and the impaled boy.
“Two…”
Their bodies instantly emptied, leaving only skin and bones. The vines ‘looked’ up to the remaining group members.
“THREE!”
The remaining four people instantly sprinted towards the gate just as the rata vines shot forward once again. Six vines, four people.
Three of the vines whipped at one of the boys, crushing his ribs and spine. Ignoring the others, the vines dragged the broken body back towards the heart.
The other vines shot towards the next closest person: Nik.
Report on the Blood Rain:
Through careful examination, we have identified the blood rain as human blood. As of now, the blood does not seem to contain any pathogens or other harmful substances. This may be subject to change with long term examinations. The blood however, does release a minute ringing sound if one listens closely enough. For now, we have not identified the reason as to why it creates those sounds.
Citizens should remain cautious of the blood for any long-term effects, but does not require Code 2 protocol. As for the origin of the blood rain, the Meteorology Technical Branch has concluded that the blood rain came from North Pole. As of now, the blood rain clouds have covered 67.4% of the Earth’s skies. We estimate that it will completely cover the globe within four days.
Though the rain does not affect humans, the soil it seeps into seems to grow much more fertile, but any plants grown in it become heavily mutated, sometimes with deadly traits, such as poisons or a carnivorous behavior normally not present in the plant species. The effects are apparent in the grown plant within a few hours. Plants already grown experience these changes much quicker, but mutated traits are less severe. If the clouds continue to spread at this rate, agriculture will be close to impossible above ground.
To animals, if the blood is drunk, any passive animals will become very aggressive and will attack any humans that go near it. If an already hostile animal drinks the blood, it loses all sense of conscience and will go completely berserk. It seems that the blood has special properties that strengthen the animals’ bodies. Please proceed with caution when facing any animal.

I Became a [Biologist] in a Fantasy World!
I loved Biology - always have, and always will. Unfortunately for me, years of fruitless research whittled away what little joy I had left in what I did. Escapism came in the form of reading isekai works, where the stresses of real life seemed so far away.Luckily, I was summoned to a fantasy world of magic, dragons, and other mythical beasts. I didn't even need to deal with the Demon Lord threat, since it seemed that my summoning was a mistake, and all they needed was the Hero who was coincidentally summoned together with me! There was no revenge subplot, no hidden trap directed against me, and they even paid me compensation for their mistake. At long last, I could finally do what I ever wanted to do - experiment for the fun of it!With my new class as a [Biologist], none of this fantasy world's mysteries will be left untouched. Even if the Demon Lord himself comes knocking, nothing will stop me from researching every nook and cranny there is to discover of the magical biology of this world! ----I write extremely casually, and purely for leisure. Updates will likely be irregular, depending on when inspiration strikes and whether I can spare the time to work on this. Don't expect too much out of this, and certainly not anything close to professional quality! Inspired by an overconsumption of Japanese light novels, manga, and anime... expect their influence to slowly but surely take hold.

The Last Marshal
Weird West Fantasy Noir Once the Republic Marshals brought order to the chaotic lands along the Frontier, facing dangers both human and supernatural with ancient wisdom and a six-gun —but that was a long time ago. Destroyed by conspiracy and betrayal, all that remains of that secretive order is one nameless man on a trek though the West seeking revenge on the woman he blames for the Marshals' fall and his disgrace. When a visitor from our world joins him on his journey, they together must confront the horrors of a strange land, the mysteries of the past and the real meaning of their quest for justice. The world of Tellus is what 19th Century Earth would have looked like if the stories of Poe, Ambrose Bierce, Lovecraft and William Hope Hodgeson were real. History in this world moves slower. The old faiths persist and civilization never conquered the dark corners of the map, at least not without being inextricably changed. Technology and culture takes a little longer to evolve in this land, as people here tend to spend more time pursuing their elaborate revenge plots or trying to avoid being the next sacrifice to the Outer Gods rather than advancing science or statecraft. Imagine Cormac McCarthy by way of Edgar Rice Burroughs, though a little less testosterone-drenched than that description would imply. Three caveats: First, there are deep mysteries here, including how such a world came to be and who controls it. Second, this world is not wholly unconnected from our own. There is a historical point of divergence, but in the distant past. To paraphrase Twain: history in this world is not a repeat of our own, but it does often rhyme. And finally, this is not a setting that lends itself to happy endings.
