《Delvers》Chapter 14 - Here we go again

Another day, another deal. This was becoming too much of a habit. She would take at least a week after this. It was simply too easy to rely on her patron to problem solve. That would definitely come to bite her in the ass, but she had to begin with dealing stuff. No more safety net, no more deals. She was thinking all of this as she tried to find a small enough item to hide on her person. She wasn't stressed about it really, she had stolen stuff before, accidentally mind you. She just had to do it on purpose now, she could do this. She grabbed a small packet of milk. It fit in her purse and as she turned around, she casually put it in her bag. Oops.
With that done she grabbed some other groceries and after a stressful time at the register it was done. Time to go home. She had another stress attack when she saw an employee walk towards her, turns out they were having some kind of event next week. Fucking hell, she took the flyer and walked outside and went straight home. Unpacking her purchases, she tried to put her mind of this whole deal. It wasn't that bad, and she had gotten a pretty good deal out of all of this so... worth it?
Picking the tablet back up she checked the chat function again, only to see a pop-up appear.
--- Goods held in escrow are released. ---
--- Do you accept? ---
--- Yes/No ---
She pressed yes and immediately regretted it. Again. A massive headache hit her, and she dry-heaved. Concepts and training flew through her mind, more understanding and ideas came to her. She remembered going through this yesterday as well but thought that it wouldn't be this bad. She was right in a way. Last time her whole body had hurt, now it was just her head. So much better.

It was fast becoming a productive morning. After sitting down for her first real meditation session, she had gotten hungry again, so she just grabbed the nearest food she found. It was a bad habit of hers, it didn't take that much effort to make something yet somehow, she never wanted to. No matter how much more she would enjoy those foods. Sitting back down for her now final first real meditation session, this time it was for real, the doorbell rang.
"GOD. Who the hell is it now?! I really want to unlock some sort of curse, so I turn the next people into fucking frogs."
Walking up to the door she threw open the door.
"WHAT."
Looking down a small woman was standing in her doorway. She was dressed in casual clothing, a brown pair of paints and a darker brown sweater. She could just make out a green t-shirt below that. The woman had brown hair and looked very young to her eyes. Not Oh-shit-where-are-this-girls-parents young but still. The warlock guessed her ago at about 16 years, maybe younger.
"Hey. You the new warlock?"
"..."
"Wait, how do you know that?!"
SHIT, she was totally found out. She had also confirmed it in her first reaction. This was already going great; she was so getting captured and dissected. Would her devil help her break out of a government facility? Oh god, what would the price be? She would definitely go to hell for that shit. Actually, if she was going to hell anyway, maybe she could start in a higher position? She didn't want to go back to being an intern, that would truly be hell. Her mind was racing faster and faster and it was going nowhere. She had just been staring dumbfounded at the young woman, she saw her lips move but she didn't even hear it.

"I'm sorry, what where you are saying?"
"UGH, look. I've been hired to escort you to the street. It's honestly fairly simple and won't take more than 10 minutes. You're lucky there's an entrance close by."
"What street? What entrance? Who hired you? Are you a government spy? Do you ass-"
"Stop. Ok, I see I skipped some stuff. I come in peace, relax."
Calming herself down she looked again at this young woman. She was short, could she take her in a fight? She seemed nice, but it was better to be prepared. She had magic powers now, that should count for something right?
"The answer is no. You can't beat me. So just come with me, The Diviner wants to meet you and do the introduction."
"Who is the d-"
"Look. Just come with me and all your questions will be answered. By someone else."
What the hell. Time to go for it, I guess. She walked back in the house and got her purse back. She really should have bought some army pants or something. They had to have pockets, right? Tactical pockets maybe? She followed the young woman out the door and locked her front door. The young woman seemed to wait for something but when The Warlock signalled, they could go she just grunted and started walked. She heard some muttering about sub-par security but decided to ignore that. She was going with this woman to a secondary location that she had no idea about. This was going to go great.

The boys and girls are given new bodies, new names, and even new magical talents before they are scattered across the continent. Only one among them is the real ninth, but all of them will have to grow up in a world where they are fugitives. Kalen, once fated to die, is now an Orellen heir in hiding. And he is determined to survive, even if he has to master his strange new powers to do it. The Last Orellen is a long, character-focused progression fantasy set in a vast universe about a boy's journey to become a powerful mage. Reviews are deeply appreciated. Please do not repost my work elsewhere without my written permission. What type of reader is this book for? You might enjoy The Last Orellen if you like... Clever and resourceful protagonists. Big fantasy worlds. Multiple cultures, lots of characters, many different types of magic--this story is expansive rather than closely focused on a narrow storyline. Progression fantasy that takes its time. Our main character will be progressing through magical ranks, but this is going to be a lengthy story. If you're more about the journey than the destination, this might be the book for you. [participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge]
