《A Wanderer's Fate》Chapter 2

I spent the rest of our trip back asking Gus what it was like being an adventurer and found out that it was pretty simple. Earn a class suitable for adventuring by time you reached level 10 and apply at the guild hall. Of course, there were different tiers of adventurer and starting out as a bronze tier would only offer the boring and cheap jobs such as clearing out giant rats from shop cellars. But If I managed to become a caster, or get a rarer class I might be able to skip bronze and enter the guild at Iron tier. Overall there were 5 tiers of adventurers. Bronze, Iron, Steel, Mithril, and Adamantine. They mythical Adamantine adventurers only came around when great change was happening in the world, as the requirements to reach such lofty heights simply were not possible without great strife in the world.

If I was going to make the most out of my second chance I knew that adventuring was the path for me. I could settle down and start a shop or marry a farmers daughter and help out around the farm. From what Gus said either one would be a respectable and comfortable life. I had a feeling that I would not be given this second chance if all I was meant to do was settle down and farm though. I knew that the weird message I received meant I had to work to keep my place here. Exactly what this entity wants me to do I have no idea though.

By time we reached the gates I had familiarized myself with the adventurers accompanying Captain Treq. There was Gus, the unofficial leader of the group. Tom, Gus's best friend and resident warrior. The last two were sisters who joined Gus and Tom after their last adventuring partners decided to quit the life and settle down. Their names are Sylvia and Kara. They were both friendly and helped explain a few of the details Gus left out on adventuring.

The first thing they shared was that while the adventuring guild was the easiest way to get contracts and Jobs, it was not the only way. The world itself would send out quests to people nearby whom it thought would be able to handle the task. And it was just one such quest that lead this group to me. Apparently the world had sent Captain Treq a quest to save someone who had gotten lost in the desert and passed out from heat stroke. The reward was minimal, just a few silvers and a small amount of XP, but they knew it was easy enough and the right thing to do. That was apparently why no one thought it weird I had no idea what was going on, their prompts told them I had amnesia and needed some help readjusting.

As we entered the city my senses were assaulted with all manner of sights, sounds and smells. The dry heat of the desert was replaced by a faint breeze that flowed through the city and cooled the area. The smell of sweat and adventurers who had been wandering the desert for half a day was still there, but overpowered by the smells of food vendors lining the streets and something I could not quite put my finger on. As I looked around more I noticed a large tower in the center of the city, it had to be at least a hundred feet in the air and I saw a silhouette of a man flying to the top.

"Excuse me, Sylvia, but who is that?" I asked as I pointed to the man flying toward the tower.

"That's the King. King Lamruil. That tower is his personal area and he can be seen from time to time flying back and forth from it to his palace or some other part of the city."

"How does he fly like that? Is he a wizard?" Whatever he was doing. I knew that I wanted to do the same. Having the ability to just fly around whenever you wanted sounded amazing.

"No, he isnt a wizard. He is some kind of monk. He can fly because he is Nailo of the Falcon." I had no idea what that meant. Nailo of the Falcon? Was that title?

"Is that some form of title, or class?"

"No, its his race. The Nailo are people very closely related to magic and their ancestors adapted their bodies to have certain advantages. They are a rare people, more reclusive than their elven cousins however you will find that Freden has a mix of all sorts of people, thanks to the king. humans like us barely make up half the population" That surprised me, I had mostly seen humans on the road until now.

"Huh, thanks for the info. Now If I am supposed to already be level 10 and have a class before joining the adventurers guild, how do I get to that point?" I was still pretty clueless about how to get experience and earn a class. All they had told me so far was that at level 10 you get to choose a class, but never explained hot to get to level 10 without one.

"You dont have a class yet? Everyone reaches level 10 naturally by the time they're and adult. Check your status sheet to make sure. You probably just forgot about it."

"And how would I do that?" I had no idea how to pull that screen back up after it disappeared.

"Focus your intent on opening your screen, and it shows up. Whatever hit you in the head really must have done a number on you if you cant even remember how to open your status screen." I was not about to refute the point, letting her just believe that I had amnesia, instead of me being from a completely different world where the rules of physics and nature didnt allow for things like magic and status sheets. Life would have been a lot simpler, and more fun, if it worked like that on Earth.

I did what she said and focused on opening a status shett, and was greeted with a screen that blocked half my vision, and at least five different flashing lights. "Ahh!" I exclaimed in shock "I was not expecting to be inundated with flashing lights and half my vision being blocked the moment I opened it. How do I turn it off!"

"You haven't made any changes to the screen before? The same way that you made the screen appeqar, you can make it transparent and lower the intensity of the notifications. I would just close the screen for now and focus on it when you have time to sit down. Its dangerous to be screen walking."

"Screen walking? I guess it makes sense to have a term for something like that." One thing I noticed before closing my screen was that I had some money. Apparently silver and gold were not actual coins you carried around, but just numbers on your status sheet? I guess that's handy. It would get annoying having to carry around hundred or thousands of coins at a time.

"Thanks for all the advise. How about I buy dinner for the group, as a thanks for helping me out until now. I can take a look through my sheet and maybe the four of you can help explain what the different messages are?"

Sylvia turned to her sister, who was talking with Tom and Gus, and asked them if they wanted dinner on me. I was about to ask Captain Treq if she wanted to join us but she had already disappeared.

"Wait, where did the Captain go?" I wanted to make sure we had not lost her.

"She does that, when we are back in the city she goes off to wherever she goes off the clock and leaves us to our own devices. After all, we get paid by the guild, so no need to follow her to the guard station or anything. And we would never turn down someone buying drinks and dinner for us." She said that second part with a grin, and I got a feeling that I would not have quite as much silver in the morning as I did right now.
