《Outlaw Teens》Chapter 10

Zack had arrived there right in time to find a girl who was thirteen, the same age as Zack, running away from the police. The police was no match for the speed of girl and the gap between them was increasing.
Unfortunately, just then, another police car came from the other side and the girl was trapped. Zack commanded the car to get to the girl as fast as it could, but he was still far away from her.
Zack finally made the decision of throwing one of his two pistols at the girl. As soon as she received the gun, she shot a confused look at Zack's car but then started firing at the advancing policemen who weren't expecting the girl to suddenly get armed.
Meanwhile, Zack threw a grenade at the police car that had come from the other side, causing it to explode. He then landed his car just next to the girl.
"Take cover behind the exploded car." Zack shouted at the girl.
The girl gave him another a suspicious look but Zack proved himself by firing at a police officer and killing him. She also realized that taking cover behind the car was better than leaving herself exposed to the police who had now gotten out of their shock.
Together, they ran towards the exploded car and then fired at the policemen from the cover, taking them down one by one using their pistols.
However, very soon, the girl realized that the police weren't targeting her but rather Zack. More reinforcements arrived and finally Zack was overwhelmed and shot on his left shoulder. Before he could get back to his cover, he received another shot on his knees. The last he remembered was the girl pulling himself back inside the cover before his eyes finally shut close.

When Zack's eyes opened, he found himself lying on the backseat of his car. His sleeves were rolled up and a bandage was applied on the left shoulder where he was shot. His knees too were bandaged.
Zack managed to force himself awake despite the stinging pain in both the places where he had been shot. Through the windows, he could see dense forest all around him. He recognised the trees very well. All around him were Gisera trees, something which could only be found in Giser, a huge rainforest in South-Western part of Mecca.
Zack tried to get out of the car but then realized that his right wrist was tied to the handle of the door through a handcuff. Upon inspection, Zack realized that it was his handcuffs.
He almost laughed at the stupidity of the girl.
"Stupid girl didn't realize that I could open the handcuffs with my fingerprints." Zack muttered to himself as he used his free hand to enter the fingerprint in the scanner but the LED light on the handcuff turned red.
"I changed the fingerprint." The girl entered the car and sat on the seat in front.
"Impossible. It requires my password." Zack said.
"I hacked it." Judy said.
"You hacked handcuffs?" Zack asked.
"Yes, I just needed to connect the fingerprint scanner on the handcuffs with my mobile and then hack it. I also tried to hack your phone but that would take a long time because your phone is protected by multiple layers of firewall, so I thought I'll ask you in person. Who are you? Why did you help me?" Judy pointed her gun at Zack.
"I came here to save you. I work for Rebels."
"Rebels? Are you serious?" The girl lowered her pistol.

"Why else will a teenager keep his phone so secured?"
"And how did you know I was in trouble?"
"We have drones that keep a watch on all the areas around us. If we spot anyone who needs our help, we come to the rescue."
"And you spend your entire day observing the city?"
"Different people take turns keeping a watch."
"That's a lot of work. Can't you build a program that automatically detects any threat?"
"We have tried to but were not successful."
"Huh? I can develop such a program easily."
"Which is why we need you. The police killed your parents too, right?"
The girl shook her head.
"Then why were you being chased?"
"I hacked a bank and stole millions."
"Whoa! Why?"
"I am an orphan. My orphanage was shut down because the government refused to fund it. We were promised a new home but no such thing happened. So, I and all other orphans started living on our own. I hacked the bank so that we could purchase a new house for all of us but was caught."
"And where are the other orphans now?"
"I don't know. Hiding somewhere probably."
"Do you hate the government?"
"Who doesn't?" The girl snorted. "The main reason why I hate them is not because they shut down our orphanage but because they made me orphan. You remember the increase in tax that happened four years ago?"
"Our revolt forced the government to reduce tax. Why won't I remember?"
"Yeah anyway, so my dad was unable to pay tax and felt into a debt. He finally committed suicide. Unable to bear the death, my mother died due to fever which left me orphan."
"That's sad to hear. I have an offer for you and all the other orphans. Join the rebels. You will be given a new life to live."
"Since when did Rebels start recruiting teens?"
"We are finding it difficult to recruit people to our cause and if things continue like this, we'll be extinct. This is why our Chief put me in charge of a program that hires kids. The government is driving people away from their houses. They always kill the parents but never kill the children. We realized that we could increase our number by recruiting children."
"If you always come to the rescue and take them away, why don't they kill the children ?"
"Maybe our President has some humanity left or maybe he does it hoping to catch us."
"I see."
"So, what do you say about the offer?" Zack asked.
"If I am promised a decent life, I'll be happy to join your cause."
"Shall we start the car then? And uh... Free me?"
"Oh sorry." The girl entered her fingerprints to unlock the handcuffs.
"Thanks, and uh.... How did you manage to escape the police?" Zack inquired.
"Fighting them was no good, so I used your smoke grenades to get both of us safely inside the car. Is it okay that I used them?"
"You probably saved my life by doing so. Why would I have any problem?"
"By the way, what's your name?" The girl asked.
"Zack."
"I'm sorry for treating you that way. Can we start things over? I am Judy."
"Nice to meet you Judy."

The Emperor's Chef
"Cook like your life depends on it, kid. Because it does." Charles had an enviable future lined up for him. Training from the age of five by some of the finest chefs in the world. Schooling at a top culinary academy in the capital. An honorable position as heir to House Boulier, a line of merchant-lords who have charmed the rich and powerful with their cooking for centuries. And in a single night, it all burned to ash. When the outbreak of war destroys his hometown, Charles is charged with escorting his family’s sacred treasure—a recipe book passed down for untold generations—out of harm's way. But his simple mission grows complicated when he’s captured by one of the most feared battalions in the world: the Spears of Mercy. Life as a prisoner in their war camp is brutal and uncertain. Charles has few allies and even fewer strengths to rely on. Only his skills in the culinary arts, honed over a lifetime in the kitchen, are deemed useful enough to keep him alive another day. But he’s not out of hope just yet. With a dash of wit, a pinch of luck, and some very creative cooking, he might just find a way to recover his family’s legacy and take back his freedom. This project is a food-themed fantasy that centers on cooking and chefs. The setting spans a wide world featuring ingredients/recipes both real and inspired by traditional fantasy. I'll eventually be publishing it as a full-length novel (or series of novels depending on length). These are the first draft chapters. I'll likely be re-writing more than once, then editing before publishing, so impressions and feedback are quite welcome. If you like the story so far and you're interested in being an early reviewer for the final product, feel free to message me. I'm looking for an artist to make some concept art and a cover (the cover shown here is just a temporary placeholder). A stand-alone novel for now, but it may turn into a series down the road.
