《Blaze》Chapter 8 - Even If You're A Girl

Serah looks at the walls and the buildings hiding inside, and she smiles. Looking forward to having a polite conversation, she walks towards the gates.
“Halt! Traveler! You have to pay the toll.” A guard calls out from a nearby booth.
Serah raises an eyebrow. Damn. She thinks as she walks over.
“How much is the toll?” Serah asks, cringing at having no money.
“Just 2 coins. Not too much.” The guard says.
“Ughhh…” Serah hums, not sure how to explain her situation. “Listen, I have no money right now. But I hunted a few wolves nearby in the forest. I was hoping to find a butcher or leatherworker to sell them to. After that, I’m sure I’ll be able to pay the toll?” Serah says, looking hopeful.
“You hunted a few wolves? Don’t sell them to a butcher; wolf meat is too tough for most folk. Sell them to the Town Guard; we’ll pay for both the meat and the furs.” The guard says, enthusiastically. I’ll probably be able to receive a new set of armor if I help out with this. The guard thinks excitedly.
Serah’s eyes light up. “That’s great! They aren’t too far. I just don’t have a good way to bring them over.” She says, satisfied with the deal.
The guard smiles. “Great! Don’t worry about carrying them back; just tell us the location and we can handle the rest. How many were there?” He asks.
“There were 5 wolves. They were about yea big. How much do you think they're worth?” Serah asks with furrowed brows. She didn’t know the going price for these wolves and it was very possible she would get cheated in this deal.
The guard’s eyes widen. “If they were really that big, they would be worth about 40-50 coins? We’ll have to weigh them to be sure. Anyways, you can head into town for now; come back in a couple hours and we should be ready with your payment.” The guard says.

He seemed quite honest, so Serah was hopeful that they would be fair. Serah smiles, deciding to let the matter go for now. Money’s better than no money. She thinks to herself. “Thanks. I’ll be back later.” She says as she walks towards the town with a wave.
…
…
Serah wanders around town. Well, no one has a cell phone… But some of these people look pretty scary… She thinks, feeling cautious. Serah wasn’t quite sure how strong someone could really get in this place. There’s so many skills. And you get a decent amount with each level-up too. Imagine if you just spammed like all your points into one skill. You might not be good at much else, but you could very well be a legendary swordsman or something. Serah ponders, planning to be careful in the future.
“Actually, other people don’t get as much skill points as you. Everyone’s different, and for the ‘I Just Want to Kill’ package, you get 3 points every level-up, which would increase as you become a higher level. But since you chose me as your patron deity, my dear lady, I’ve added an extra point to your level-ups. Also, other people don't have access to the same skills you do.” The deity of war says, her voice resounding around Serah.
Serah’s eyes widen. “Are you listening to my thoughts!? You effing freak!” She exclaims, feeling very violated.
“Aww, come on. Don’t be shy. It was your first time in a town of this world. I just had to take a peak. Okay, I can see you’re pissed. Well, since you’re out of the forest now, I’ll just go. But I’ll check in every once in a while. You might not like it, but fate brought us together, and to me, looking after you is kind of like looking after myself, so you’ll have to put up with me. Remember to call home once in a while; bye, babe.” The deity of war says before her voice disappears.

Serah looks around and she was getting a few stares from the locals. A blush forms on her cheeks and she leaves the area with her head down. Freaking patron deity! Even if you are a girl, that doesn’t change that you’re a pervert! She thinks, angry.

Dear Spellbook (Link to rewrite in blurb)
A rewrite of this story has been posted here: https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/49881/dear-spellbook-a-fantasy-time-loop-rewrite Live. Study. Repeat. Tal is a sorcerer in a world where they are killed on sight, traveling with a man charged with carrying out the task. Every night Tal must pretend to study his spellbook to maintain his disguise as a Wizard’s Apprentice. If his disguise slips and his charade is uncovered, it will be his death. Seeking answers to mysteries that arose after his parent’s murder, Tal must accept any allies, no matter the risks, to uncover his family’s secret. But when he wakes up one morning to find himself trapped repeating the same day, he has to overcome his challenges all on his own. This story is an adaptation of a D&D campaign I ran but never was able to complete. I tried to capture the feel of a table-top RPG session —tropes and humor— without relying on the mechanics. This is not a litRPG or gamelit story and no D&D mechanics or system appear in the game. It follows one member of an adventuring party as he deals with the problems with that arise from being an adventurer. Namely, getting roped into adventures. The story has a time loop element, but will eventually move past that. This story explores the magic systems, the history, and the lore of the world through the lens of Tal's entries in his Spellbook and interludes from other written works in the world. New entries on Mondays Credit to JackOfHearts for the cover.
