《Unlikely Animals (short stories)》The Boy & Rain

One dark day in late summer, The Boy sang the one line he knew from the one song he knew for such a day. “Rain, Rain, go away. Rain, Rain, go away. Rain, Rain, go away.”

“What!” cried his mom in mock horror, “we so desperately need rain this summer. Maybe you could sing another song?”

“I don’t know any other song,” said The Boy; “it is the only song I’ve been taught in Sunday School.”

His Mom pondered for a moment. “Instead, sing ‘Rain, rain, come and stay.’”

The Boy tried it out. “Rain, Rain, come and stay.”

“See?” she said. “Now, go and play!” And then left The Boy to play outside.

The Boy remembered more lines to the song and fiddled with the words some more. “Rain, Rain, come and stay. Come again every day. Mommy wants to play. Rain, Rain, come and stay.” He danced about and sang the one verse of the second song he knew for such a day.

Be careful who you invite to stay.
