《The Strongest Armor》Chapter 5: The Birth of a 'Cripple'

[Ding! Your cultivation levelled up, current cultivation: Qi Gathering lv 9]
The sweet sound of the system shook him out of his focused state. With no sense of day or night, Li Zimu just cultivated, slept and grew.
Slowly, he could feel his body forming. It felt gross and strange, not something he would go through another time. Not that he would... Right?
That wasn’t foreshadowing for sure, yes, that wasn’t.
His forming body could now lightly kick his mother’s belly a few more times a day. As an obedient adult-turned-baby, he wouldn’t pointlessly kick his mother after all.
As a smart baby, he simply kicked lighting a few times a day so his mother could fawn over him. Yes, fawn over, as his webnovel wisdom concluded that all main characters have doting mothers, awesome fathers to revenge and, in some cases, horrible grandfathers.
Tho not always accurate, he had a sneaking suspicion his mother-to-be would shower him with so much love that he’d drown.
Although Li Zimu’s cultivation has increased to the ninth level of Qi Gathering stage, he knew he wouldn’t break through to Channel Opening stage soon. He had no plans of charging through yet as he could sense he was about to be born.
Although Li Zimu didn’t know what cultivation was like for others, for him, all he had to do was repeat the same circulation, absorb energy and the system would automatically convert it into experience for him. It was, in other words, just grinding. Pure, boring grinding.
He wondered how those muscle-headed idiots could sit around for centuries grinding like this.
Another thing to note is that even though his body was only that of an unborn infant, his sturdiness could be compared to a 6 year old.
Therefore, he had no fears of incidents happening to him during childbirth, and he trusted his mother’s cultivation level.

Being pushed through that hole, however, wasn’t something he wanted to experience. He dreaded the inevitable birth.
…
The beautiful woman on the bed was sweating, her face red and strained. A blood-curdling scream rang out from her fragile looking mouth. The sound produced didn’t match her delicate appearance.
The maids hurried in and out with basins of warm water, towels and other essential items. The doctor was covered in sweat, if anything went wrong, not only would his head go rolling, but so would his families. And maybe half the city’s…
Indeed, the woman was about to give birth.
Seconds passed like an eternity as the young man paced about the room. Sometimes holding his head in worry, other times, he would kneel beside his wife and hold her hand, whispering encouragements.
Long arduous hours slipped by and the tension dissipated. In the woman’s embrace was an extremely ugly newborn boy.
…
Pov: father
As a tiny head emerged, followed by the rest of the body, I saw my son for the first time.
My only thought was: Fuck this thing’s ugly. Where did my good genes go?
My next reaction was shock as my adorable, beautiful, amazing, fantastic wife hugged and kissed this abomination as if it was an adorable little baby.
The mother’s eyes are amazing.
My last reaction was when I sensed his cultivation.
He had none.
Absolutely no feeling of Qi.
He was a cripple.
Our first child was a cripple.
An unwarranted tear rolled down my adorable, fantastic, amazingly awesome wife’s beautiful, fair face as she noticed it too.
I hesitated, my mouth opening and closing. She sensed it as well, knowing what I was thinking.
I didn’t want a cripple as my first son.
Her fierce eyes glared back at me, piercing my heart.

I weakly muttered “He’s a cripple.. We can’t have a cripple child…”
“Li Zhihao. I warn you. Our baby has just been born. We can’t confirm it. Even if he is.. That. He is still our baby, and we will raise him properly into a strong body practitioner.”
I swallowed my words. I knew that we both knew he was most definitely a cripple. Any child would be born with Qi. Yet, sometimes, there would be anomalies. So very rare would a child be born with nothing. They would only absorb qi, and never retain it. They could only cultivate their bodies.
Although body practitioners can be very strong, that was limited to their bodies. They have no qi to infuse into their attacks and are extremely disadvantaged against cultivators.
I shook my head in desperation. This is my son, I will raise him to be a miracle.
Pushing away the waves of guilt, I swore to protect my baby son… and to have another son.
…
Back to pov Li Zimu
I saw my first light after emerging from the tunnel of trauma.
And then a woman’s face, she was very pretty. I knew this woman was my mother. She held me so very gently. I tried my best to smile at her, yet my baby face was out of my control, barely managing an ugly smile like expression. It’s ok since my mother seemed to have understood.
The next moment, my joy faded away as I sensed something wrong. Her eyes looked at me with warmth, joy and.. And pity.
Why pity?
I’m her child, I’m healthy. I don’t have three arms.. I think.
I just checked, I only have two.
A man’s voice sounded beside me. I couldn’t see the person as I couldn’t move properly yet.
“He’s a cripple.. We can’t have a cripple child…”
Cripple? That confused me.
I’m not a cripple, in fact, I’m a magical genius that started cultivating from the womb.
Unless I have a twin brother?
Highly unlikely, I didn’t feel anyone else in their with me.
Unless…
‘Hey system, did you hide my cultivation or something?’
[Answer, all host’s presence is sealed.]
Ah.
That’s a good thing if I had invisibility or something. I can also hide my strength and slap people’s faces everywhere.
Ah but not now, I don’t want my parents to treat me like a cripple!
They wouldn’t know until I could talk and tell them!
‘System, can I turn it off? Turn it off for me, yeah?’
[No, unable to turn off.]
‘…’
And thus began Li Zimu’s days of being treated as a cripple baby.

Fragments of Glass
before the 1939-1945 War, most churches in England had stained glass windows, but despite local people's best efforts many of these windows were smashed in the bombing. What could be repaired was repaired, but in many churches all they could do was reassemble the remaining fragments randomly, with extra bits of clear glass added to eke them out to fill the windows. That is what I imagined for my collection of short stories: fragments of stained glass, bits of robe, bits of faces, all sorts of odds and ends randomly stuck together. And with quite a lot of clear fragments among the coloured ones. Just broken pieces of stories that anyone can look through.
