《Redshirt: The Journey》Redshirt- Redshirted

He awoke cold, wet, and miserable, so he rolled over getting ready to complain to his girlfriend God willing future wife. Of course, he then found a face full of shit, luckily his face wasn’t a face in manure; though is it really lucky to be placed in a situation where you could awake in poo, the man with a thick nose began to sniff the faeces in an attempt to track the animal droppings, before he remembered that he had never ‘really’ been out into the countryside and away from cities such as he was born in, which was…

The man with full lips and hair like lambswool quickly sat up and switched his thought track, (obviously not because he was running out of words to describe defecation), and felt as if core parts of himself were being stripped away by some great pressure all around, looking around at the field surrounded by some big trees, he guessed that by the reactions of some of the various kids and more commonly the youngish adults, around his age, that he wasn’t the only one feeling as if his very identity was being consumed. Though some of the more ‘unique’ people seemed to be handling it better.

On that point a taller than average girl with a confident gait and stylish white gloves, followed by a shorter man with what looked like a tailored sweater vest began to walk in his direction. The man believed he had no issues with those who had more material wealth than him, but with the all-encompassing dread that came along with your very sense of identity being stripped away, he wasn’t feeling particularly charitable.

“Excuse me, you in the red shirt can you please move over to the left.” The girl commanded as she squatted down to look at the animal droppings and began to mutter something about the potential for divergence across worlds within the Equus Farus family with her friend.

The tall girl brushed passed, their hands touching for a fraction of a second. His hand felt as if fire ran through it, and this fire slowly spread throughout his lean body. The girl didn't even seem to notice to contact, so he made no mention of it, or the uncomfortable senation that burned through his veins.

The man in the ‘red shirt’ had many issues with the preceding moments; the confusion over how some poo is tied to a family, the way that he almost stopped existing to the two after he politely moved out of the way, but most of all was the slight amount of red rage he felt about being referred to as Redshirt.

He was not fuming because of the dismissive way he was spoken too, since it was common back home to address strangers by their clothing, no, he was pissed because of the fact that, one he was not in fact wearing a ‘red shirt’ and, two the girl called his £400 Balmain tracksuit a ‘red shirt’. Some would question why an almost grown man would be so hung up on a posh younger girl dismissing his clothes, and to that the man, would begin to talk about the intricacies of the phrase ‘drip or drown’.

Of course, the purchase of his first designer tracksuit saw him drown, especially after blowing some of his first payslip upon it.

Nonetheless the man had acquired what he equated to wealth and to have that dismissed so thoughtlessly by someone, who most likely never had to work for their wealth rankled. He internally ranted about the ‘red shirt’ and by the time he was ready to let his pain out verbally upon the pair, he realised they were out of talking distance and that there was some sort of box in his face, and not the one he would expect or want to see after falling asleep next to his missus.

Well done!

Fair enough, the man thought, relatively pleased that he was receiving more validation from this floating box than he did from his lecturers at his Uni.

Then he realised that the burning sensation has mostly calmed down, though a bit of heat lingered upon the back of his neck, which he ignored.

The man thought for a bare moment before deciding.

Vanessa.

The name of his girlfriend and if he could return home, future wife, the other options did not even tempt him.

The young man, now with a name engraved within his soul and an ironclad goal, was not a philosopher but he thought to himself what is a leaf without no tree? His tree was Vanessa and as he felt his memories return from their awkwardly sweet first meeting, down into arguments that bloom after the honeymoon stage and then finally into the nervously joyful feelings after seeing the positive pregnancy test result from the night before. He knew no matter what he would return home, not just to look after Vanessa and their unborn child but to live a full and happy life.

The man looked around, across the clearing it was clear that the other kids were seeing the same thing as him, some of their reactions however were a lot more animated than his own. Now he didn't know if it was because he was naturally a calm, cool, and collected person, or if this system took away everything from his brain, except the name Vanessa.

The man decided that it didn't really matter, and that he should probably go find some munch, a job, and a room. Maybe not in that order, the man patting his incredibly empty pockets began to get ready to play a school yard game to decide on what direction to walk in, something about a cat with a flu and a dog with a chew.
