《Scion of Shadows》Chapter Seventeen: The Fall of Ys

As Tereus and Maddie approached the Academy, the saw Druids in red robes at the gates. They were fighting against black-clad soldiers wearing the plumed helmets and Gorgoneion of a soldier of Ares. Tereus stopped for a moment to survey his army. With the markets destroyed, soldiers were advancing on the Academy and the Palace. Priests of Mars behind the rows of soldiers, casting offensive spells, tearing down the Druids’ defenses, and creating defensive fortifications of their own. The whole city was in chaos. Only the carefully advancing soldiers, all in perfect formation, were orderly. Palace guards and city soldiers fell first. Druids took much longer. Most fought with magic, but a few of the red-robes fought with swords or daggers. Some druids stripped off their robes, revealing the whorled tattoos of British warriors. They were cut down by the army of Ares, but managed to break apart the line.
As Maddie and Tereus ran closer to the Academy, she saw that several of the students were engaged in magical assaults. Most of them were older students, but several first-years were helping from the back. Maddie saw Corentin leading his class. Cleo and Gaius were standing alongside him.
Maddie tried to look at Tereus, but it was a struggle to move her body. He had lied to her, used her fear against her. And there were her friends, whole and unharmed. With extreme effort she swung the huge onyx sword at Tereus. It rebounded off Ares’s spear.
“So, you’re stronger than I gave you credit for.”
As he looked at her, she felt the weight of his power pushing down on her mind. She pulled the sword back and swung again, but Tereus merely sidestepped. The weight grew heavier, almost physically pushing her to the ground.
“You fight for your friends. It’s time to to eliminate that option.”

He held out the spear and lightning leapt from it. The bolt hit the side of the Academy. Stone crumbled down, killing students and Druids alike. Maddie lost sight of her friends. She pushed off some of Tereus’s weight and swung at him again.
Her sword paused mid-swing.
“I see that won’t be enough. We’ll get rid of some of those pesky memories, instead. The Druids aren’t the only ones with powerful mind mages here.”
He pushed her arms to the side and touched her forehead with his hand. Everything disappeared, replaced by shadow. She looked out on a battlefield, but she couldn’t concentrate on it, or remember why she was there.
It didn’t take long for the water to flood the streets. The soldiers regrouped and retreated toward the city wall. A large ship rose up and the soldiers began boarding. Several priests stayed behind to cover their retreat. Tereus led Maddie to the ship and they climbed aboard.
The waters of the sea began to pull down in the island. It ran through houses. The remains of its greatest building were flooded. The main gates crashed open and more seawater flooded in. Within hours the entire city was submerged.

Bright Battle Story: Tactics Heart
This is Bright Battle Academy. It is not a place where your hand will be held or your failings compensated for. It is not a place for the weak, or the subversive, or the conspicuously diverse. This is Bright Battle Academy, where champions are forged and legends begin. Dwarfs? Once they were part of the great alliance. They helped build this very academy. But they were so stubborn, so unyielding, so unwilling to bend themselves to the rules. And so they weakened, and so they declined, and so their empires faded. What few that are left shun the academy. We have no dwarfs here. Rogues? Perhaps a handful in the sprawl, hiding in the shadows, hoarding their merits, hoping to buy a promotion to something remotely useful, ninja or assassin perhaps. But in the academy proper? No. We have no rogues here. And yet despite everything here she stands. Nala Greyward, Dwarf Rogue. Pettiest of thieves. Unpleasantest of surprises. Causer of problems. So she killed an ogre. So nobody knows how she did it. So what. Throw her in with the real prospects, with the elves and the vampires and the fighters and the magic users. See how she does in that environment--see just how long it is, before the problem that is Nala Greyward solves itself. This is Bright Battle Academy. Good luck. Discord if you're into that.

The Electric Messiah
Volume Two of the Ontogeny series. A time of unprecedented crisis has come. During a mission to the edge of the known world, Brigadier Weyland James discovered that humanity faces a threat so terrible that the sane mind can barely conceive it. Failure to meet this threat would mean the end of human civilisation, mankind thrown back to a life of wandering savagery, easy prey for the true masters of the planet who see humans as mere animals, theirs to use and exploit as they see fit.Hope exists, if all mankind can unite, putting aside their petty differences for the greater good, but the truth is so unbelievable that the Brigadier faces an almost impossible task in convincing the leaders of the human world. His task is made even harder by the fact that several governments have been infiltrated by agents of the enemy, who are using their influence to sow seeds of war and chaos. The Brigadier is not mankind's only hope, though. In Helberion, a small group of scientists, struggling to make a major scientific breakthrough, is being hampered by assassination and sabotage. Is this the work of the enemy of mankind? King Leothan hopes it is, because it would mean that the enemy fears this new science, that it could be used to create a powerful weapon against them. A weapon that could be the Saviour of Mankind. The Electric Messiah... This is the sequel to Ontogeny. If you haven't read that book yet you must read it before you read this book.
