《Second Chance》Chapter 5: Meeting God… again.

‘I will show you how to contact God.’ were the last words Mike said. I looked at him with an expression which was a mix of confusion, surprise, and admiration.

‘Well… show me.’ I urged him to continue. Michael turned towards an altar on a podium and walked over to it. He put his hand on the podium. There wasn’t any light nor was there anything special. After around twenty minutes he twitched and fell back. I caught him in the last moment before he fell off the podium and broke his neck. He looked at me and said:

‘Your turn.’ He got back on his feet, went behind me and pushed me toward the altar. After some hesitation, I put my hand on the altar. As soon as I did that, I blacked out.

I woke up on that one familiar couch. The tall man I’d met around three days ago was standing in front of me. Well, he wasn’t standing. Actually, he was sitting in a very fancy office chair. He noticed me and stood up.

‘What is that you want from me?’ He said raising his hands to his sides to assume a godly posture.

‘Do I have a limit to what I can ask?’ I wanted to get that cleared up. Usually, the all-knowing beings limit your questions to something like three at a time.

‘You have about an hour. Somethings should have been explained in the message I entered into your phone, correct?’

‘Yeah, I saw. How many people have been reincarnated?’

‘Two people currently. You and Michael.’

‘Do I have any kind of superpower, like in those fantasy books?’

‘No, but your 15-year-old body is capable of the same things as your 20-year-old body. I honestly don’t know why, but if I were you I would start lifting.’ He said sarcastically.

‘I have one last question. How is it possible that both you and evolution exist?’

‘I created the most primal animals and let evolution take it from there. It’s like an automated correction system but instead of correcting, it has a chance of fucking it up more.’

‘If you were omnipotent, could you heat a burrito too hot that even you can’t eat it.’

‘Who said I was omnipotent!? I just have complete rule over the universe and I’ve seen more than every other being. I know history because I’ve witnessed myself.’ I looked at the man in sheer awe. I couldn’t really think of anything else to ask. He returned to his seat at his desk. I looked up and asked the ultimate question.

‘Can my fate be changed?’ God looked at me, intrigued. He looked like he didn’t expect that question. ‘You said I will die again due to my fate but is it possible to change that?’ The man stood up and grabbed my shoulders. He looked me straight in the eyes. He had beautiful, round, brown eyes.

‘I don’t know. It’s up to you. If you don’t do anything different, your fate won’t change. You are the first person that has had that question. Even Michael didn’t ask me that. He lived his life and died at 19 twice. I’ve never witnessed someone change their fate. I don’t think it could happen but I have a high chance of being wrong.’

I shook off his hands off my shoulders.

‘If I change my fate, what could happen?’

‘I… don’t know. In the whole universe, no one had done that.’

‘You know, I want to go back now. I feel satisfied with your answers.’

‘Okay. If you have anything else to ask, come on a Thursday between 5 PM and 6 PM. That’s when my connection with the world is strongest.’

‘Wait… I thought time was a human concept.’

‘You thought you idiots could come up with something as complicated as that!? You only gave it those stupid names.’ His tone changed from calm to agitated.

‘Alright. Send me back.’

‘See you, kid. Stay safe.’ He squeezed those last words before I blacked out.

I awoke with my hand still on the altar. I felt numbness crawl through my body and I began falling backwards. Fortunately, Mike was behind me so he caught me. He helped me get back on my feet and instructed me to the exit. The exit was an emergency exit, used in case of a fire. It was much closer to the altar but Mike wanted me to use the other one so I could see him sleeping and wake him up. I didn’t know if he was really lazy or really smart. Well, lazy people are smarter… I think.

I went home quietly. I tried my best not to alert my parents who were either furious at me for running out without saying a word or they are sleeping soundly, oblivious to the charade that happened not more than 5 minutes ago. I was kind of anxious about going home. I could either get away with it or get in big trouble. I could get a hotel or sleep at a friend’s house. Only problem was I had 2$ worth of pocket change and my friends definitely won’t take me in on a whim. My only option was to return home and suffer the consequences.

I opened the front door very slowly as to not alert any members of my family. I had to be most wary of my dad, who was notorious for being able to wake up for even a mosquito’s buzzer. I’m around 50kg. and that makes my footsteps pretty easy to distinguish. I sneaked around with my hands tucked up like and walking on my tip toes.

My footsteps made almost no sound… ALMOST no sound. Nevertheless, the unobtrusive sound of my steps was heard by the man himself. I realized as soon as I heard his steps above me. Our house has two floors. On the first floor is our kitchen and living room and on the second floor are the bedrooms. It’s not a big house by any means. I hear the steps above me slowly move towards the stairs. I drop all of my outdoor items and ran towards the kitchen as quietly as possible.

“Jake!? Jake, is that you!?” he yelled in his drowsy voice. I made my voice to match.

”Yeah, I’m just get a… a water. Yes… one...um... water.” I was so anxious I didn’t even notice the mistakes in my grammar while I was speaking. Luckily, neither did my dad.

”Go to sleep otherwise you’ll be late tomorrow!” He yelled down across the house. If his steps didn’t wake mom up, that shout definitely did.

After my dad went up again, after waiting for a bit I also went to my room. I was really tired so I just went to sleep immediately. Next morning I woke up and my phone was charging, which I didn’t really think about. It was at 100% so I guessed I just put it before I went to sleep.

I checked my phone, as per usual, when I noticed a strange message from an unknown number. It wasn’t even from this side of the country. I opened the message expecting one of those “Nigerian Prince” types of scams, but instead, I was met with something even more surprising.

UNKNOWN /06:54 – Hello Jake. I’m not someone you recognize nor do you know me personally, but I have been watching you from afar and I know you quite well. Please meet me at 16:00 on Friday. Please note that I am a friend, not an enemy. I only wish to talk.-
