《Kanu》1.12 - Heroes' Welcome

The return to the Cafila was a quiet one. The three were consumed with thoughts. What they had seen, what they had done, and what they would become. Hassain carried several books and relics found in the chamber, proof of the necromancer’s works. In a bag the woman carried jewels, gold and anything that looked expensive. Kanu carried something more, he brought the sorcerers broken and withered body, draped over his shoulders. A reminder of what they had done in that chamber, proof of their actions. The woman spoke directly to Kanu, he understood none of it. He could mimic words Hassian used, but had no understanding of them. He turned to Hassian to translate.

“Rōs wants to know if we should burry the body before returning,” Hassian asked Kanu.

“What is a Rōs,” Kanu asked. The woman got excited and pointed to herself.

“Rōs is the woman,” Hassian pointed to her.

Rōs was no stranger to dead bodies, having watched many die and killed others. She had come to this land on a pirates’ vessel. She was not a pirate, as women were not allowed to be on pirate ships where she came from. Instead, she snuck aboard the ship with her lover after they murdered her fiancé; she was determined to see the world. When she was discovered she was given a row boat and knife. By the time she had been captured she had become an excellent thief and experienced fighter. However, she was no match for the experienced merchants in the cafila. She was caught stealing and arrested. A foreigner, with knowledge of the language. Had Hassian not studied a multitude of languages, she would have still been captive. While dead bodies were no shock, she was confused by carrying the body instead of hiding it.

“Tell her, they need to see this,” Kanu’s only words.

There was plenty of commotion as they finally entered the territory of The Grand Cafila. Shouts of treason, betrayal and damnation. The sun was setting and they didn’t waste any time making there way to the leaders, walking past those in line. Nobody seemed to want to argue with those who carried a dead body as if it were an accessory. As the leaders prepared to end their open discussion for the day they were silenced as Kanu dropped a body before them.

“We have brought the Necromancer,” Hassian spoke to his father and other leaders.

Hassain emptied the bag of items he was carrying, books, tools and artifacts fell before them, reunited with the body. Chaos followed, demands for instant execution and beheading. Hassian had broken unwritten laws by bringing these items. Kanu had been disrespectful as a guest to present them with a dead body instead of gifts. Rōs had been prepared for a fight, as she was a prisoner, but nobody seemed to notice.

Someone shouted for guards to arrest them. Kanu quickly buried his fist in a guard’s face. As Kanu defended himself from capture Hassian shouted for him not to fight back. As Kanu finally surrendered Hassian noticed Rōs was missing. During the commotion, she had escaped. It was no concern to him, she had tormented him since Kanu was poisoned. Kanu and Hassian were to be detained until it was decided that they would be executed. Hassian’s father cried out in defense of his son, doing what the others were afraid of. It made no difference as they were carried off.

Rōs watched the commotion from the crowd, seemingly unphased. She quickly scooped up any loose clothing, moving away from the commotion and building her disguise. Kanu shouted but his words meant nothing, even to those in attendance that spoke his language. They had killed the necromancer, and their reward was to be jailed.
