《Forged in Earth and Fire》Prologue

The pain was awful I’ve never felt anything like it before. In an instant, my mind sent out waves of screeching pain, and just as quickly it vanished. Now, I’m here... wherever here is. Darkness is all there is, not like I can go somewhere else.

My body won't move no matter how hard I try. With all my might I try and command my limbs to move, scream at myself to walk forward to no avail. My body stays motionless as my mind races through each thought and belief I ever had. Only after seemly going through every detail of my life do I see light and along with it, a woman appears.

“Hello, little one.” It softly spoke. I kept my silence skeptical of what was in front of me.

It was defiantly a woman, although an odd one at that. She towered over me and shined like the setting sun. The orange glow that radiated around here complemented her peach-like hair and her darkened skin. She wore a simple yet elegant dress...toga.... robe? Whatever it was she seemed more suited to a Greek myth than whatever was going on now.

“Umm hi?” I croaked out surprised I could still speak. “Who are you exactly?” I questioned doubting I would receive a useful answer.

“Oh, my sweet one I am Evalia Goddess of Entertainment.” She answered in a loud and Goddy voice. She acted as if this information helped me one bit.

“Right Evalia, hi I guess I’m Greg,” I responded without any better response. “Where am I?” I asked another useless question most likely.

“You're in the realm of the dead of course, well at least a part of it.” She responds as one would to a child being told they can’t have ice cream tonight.

“Makes sense.” I flatly respond ignoring her belittling tone.

“Humph. You’re an odd one, Greg. Most mortal freak out after learning about their demise. Why aren't you rambling about how you were too young to die?”

I can’t tell if she is new on the job, or my reaction is just that uncommon. Either way, my first encounter with a god doesn’t seem to be living up to the hype. “Well, I’ve Kinda been lying here for a bit and just assumed that I died. You know black void, all my memories playing in front of me.” I pause before I ask the obvious. “So... are you going to reincarnate me because I would really like to go back to Earth. I don’t need some medieval place with magic, I’m fine with my computers.” I don’t know if this is truly real or not, but I figure cutting to the chase will save me time dream or not.

There is a long pause and I worry that maybe just maybe some hint of fake respect would have been good. Instead, she cackles like a mad witch, kicking her feet up and tearing up for nearly a minute. Shit maybe I’m going to hell, well it's been a good run.

“No silly one.” she finally response after wiping her eyes. “No no, we don’t do reincarnation here little one. You're stuck here for the rest of time.” She responds in a bubbly joyful voice like she didn’t just tell me I’ve been dammed to a black void for eternity.

“Wait what! I’m stuck in this place forever!” I nearly cry.

“Oh no little one, there is a nicer place here where you will stay, but that’s not important. I just need you for a second before you go on” And as Evalia finishes speaking she reaches down to touch my head leaving her finger there for what feels like a lifetime but, is no more than a meager few seconds. Finally, she released with a small golden droplet lying on her finger.

“Wha... what is that?” I woozily speak trying not to fall only to realize my legs won’t let me.

“This? Well, it's your memories or at least some of them, I need them. I’ll try to be quick since you don’t have long till you move on. I’m the god of entertainment, so it is my job to entertain the gods and make sure they’re happy which is just as hard as you could imagine. So, I’ve decided to give a small little knowledge boon to a little one to be” And with those words as Greg desperately tries to understand anything said a piece together a response, his voyage to the true realm of the dead is finally complete leaving the poor god to herself.

“Hmm, odd one he was... oh well.” Slowly and ever so carefully Evalia brings the golden droplet over to her workspace. A world younger than the one that silly mortal came from but vastly more exciting. A world of colorful races and monsters with magic and skills beyond what most worlds are given.

“Now to find the perfect little one to give my bo...ah.” The clumsy goddess tries to pull back her finger as the droplet falls off escaping her view into this young world. “Shoot! Meh oh well I’m sure it will be entertainment enough for them, just hope It didn’t land on like a dragon or something, that’s never fun too strong for my tastes.”

And it's here with the knowledge of a strange mortal and the mistakes of a lazy god that a child is born, unaware of their fate to be.
