《Dimensional Market System》(VII)

Oreth stepped away from the door and sat back down, he didn't know what the damn demon was planning but he didn't know what Vernes would do if he didn't accept the plan let alone hear it.
"Alright then, I'm a little bit short on time so could ya speed it up and stop trying to act so mysterious?"
"HAHA, I guess you are right. Well, the deal is pretty simple, in exchange for protection I want you to work for me. How about it?"
Oreth looked at Vernes and used his hand to signal the demon to continue.
"You see, in my family, there is a long tradition where the son with the most power takes over the family when the father is ready to step down. In my case that is my older brother and I, though not by much he already has an advantage of being older and having already been accepted to the Academy. To make my brother lower his guard I have pretended to be a lazy, muscle brain demon while I make plans in the shadows."
Oreth imagined himself being sucked deeper and deeper into a worse situation, 'If this is all true now I have no other choice than to accept. This idiot just told me his little secret, couldn't he have waited till I gave him my answer?'
"So what? you want to kill your brother?"
Vernes laughed and shook his head, "If only things were that easy, you see my family has a few rules in order to succeed in the position. First, we can't kill any demon without a reason, our family set this rule to make sure that we understand restraint. That's why I didn't do anything to Turgas until today since I was personally affected by his actions. Even then it's falling into the grey area but it fits my made-up personality so I went with it. One of the other rules is that we can't kill each other, we both had to sign a soul contract that basically made us unable to attempt for each other's life in pretty much every way. After all, if my family loses one of us, that would be a great loss of power."

Oreth didn't like the sound of being between the competition for power of the two brothers. Just because they couldn't kill each other didn't mean that they couldn't kill him.
"Well I don't really see what you get out of lying to me so I guess that you are telling the truth, but I have one question. Why did you choose me to work for you and if I accept, you still haven't told me what it is that I would have to do."
The blue-haired demon nodded and pointed his finger in the air, a grey stickman appeared out of grey light and then other stickmen appeared and began creating somewhat of a cartoon. "You're only job is to create allies out of the wastes of our school and the Acedemy if you get in. I need you to win their loyalty and have them do everything that you ask. If I ever call upon you I want them to accompany you. See you're pretty much a recruiter, since I can't do it myself I have to have others help me. You all might be weak now but it's possible for some of them to graduate from the Academy and become stronger. As for those that don't well it's better to have more and not need them than to need them and not have them."
"So we are basically just chess pieces that you and your brother will use to become heads."
Vernes tilted his head in confusion, "What is this chess?... Anyway, the reason that I'm letting you in on this secret of mine is because I saw the face that you showed earlier today when you were walking away from Turgas. Instead of groveling for your life you kept yourself calm and were ready to bring Turgas down along with you. This is very different from your file and my read of you, I'd like to think that like me you were hiding your true personality. So what do you say? If we stay here much longer my plan will not work, meaning that you will most likely be killed by Anithal."

Oreth looked at the blue demon while he thought about the offer, 'Yesterday I declared that I wouldn't let anyone or anything get in the way of me being the strongest. I don't like being manipulated by this but it needs to be done in order for me to gain more time and a better understanding of the system.'
"I have to say that all this sounds interesting. I'm in since it's the only realistic way for me to survive but will I receive any benefits?"
Vernes laughed and nodded, "You'll keep your life, one that is in danger of being ended by me! ....Just kidding you'll be left alone most of the time, so I don't plan to give you too many benefits. My brother will be closely monitoring me so I need to be careful. All I will give you is a partner that is strong enough to protect you for the next four years. I feel like this is enough now let's stop wasting time."
Vernes raised his hand and a paper appeared, he handed it to Oreth to read.
The paper was a soul contract that would kill the person who broke it. The one that he was handed was basically telling him that he couldn't contact Vernes if he wasn't asked to by someone who had a certain crest. The second was that he couldn't talk about anything that Vernes had told him about himself or anyone else involved. The third was that he would assist Vernis if ever needed. In exchange Vernes would save him from Anithal and provide him with an assistant that would follow his instructions. He would be freed from having to assist Vernes and his assistant will no longer have to follow his instructions when the competition for the position of family head was over. Vernes also added that once everything was over he would not hurt the other party unless they target him, if the demon who signed this contract attempts to kill him they would die.
"You see I've learned that I have to make these agreements as loose as possible. The simpler things are, the easier it is for me to manage everyone. If I treat all of you fairly then the probability that you'll betray me or try to find a way to escape our contract will be diminished."
Oreth was alright with the agreements he would even get an assistant that would follow his orders, though it probably is just a method to monitor him. He used his sharpened nails to dig into his skin and soak it with his blood and used that to sign his name. As soon he had signed the paper began to burn and created dark particles that entered his body. At that moment the terms that he had agreed to became etched in his memory making it unable for him to forget them.
Vernes put everything back into his storage space and smiled. "I look forward to seeing what you can accomplish now, listen up and do exactly what I tell you to do."
