If I could cry tears of blood I would. Tears streamed down my face as I watched truck kun crush into my sister out of the living room window. "Sister! Noooooo!"
"Daughter!? Nooooo!"
I watched as my mother ran out of the house to try to help my sister. Blood drained of my already pale face as loud beeping filled the street and the truck backtracked, running over my mother in the process. "Mother?! Nooo!!" I cried harder, stretching my hand towards her, feeling powerless and unable to reach her.
"Wife? Daughter?! Nooo!!"
I froze as a deep baritone shout echoed in the garage. Dad stepped out of his car and ran towards his struck wife and daughter.
Thank the heavens the truck stopped moving. I slowly shuffled towards the entryway, blanching at the thick smell of iron in the air. The moment I reached the front door I couldn't stop myself from shouting. "DAD! Watch out!"
But it was too late. Another truck came crashing down from the sky, directly squashing the buff man trying to console his wife.
Everything started spinning as I sagged to the ground and blacked out.
As I came to again, I heard sounds of beeping. My pulse quickened as I hyperventilated, breaths growing quicker and more panicked. Was it my turn now? Is the truck backtracking to get me too?
The beeping intensified and I forced open my eyelids, to see a panicked nurse's lips move. "Uap uap uap woooop? Woap wap op" I couldn't quite make out her words, warped as they sounded but I slowly calmed down. Not today truck kun. Not today.
"Uap are woap. Uap are safe. You are safe." My breathing calmed down as the pounding and ringing in my ears ebbed away. The nurse's words slowly changed from gibberish into legible sounds as she gently held my arm and repeated the sentence over and over again, seeing as it helped me calm down.
"Don't worry mister Greenwood. You are safe here. Everything will be fine." My eyes trained on her, slowly coming into focus to reveal a middle-aged nurse with the gentlest motherly smile I've ever seen. Her hushed words greatly comforted me.
"I see you've calmed down." She beamed at me happily, before her features morphed into a sad smile. "I've got bad news, good news and two letters. But whether the good news would help overshadow the bad news I can't say."

I continued staring at her mutely, trying to gather my thoughts. "The good news is, you are physically completely healthy. You got away from that incident with nary a scare." If that was the good news I dread what's to come. "The bad news is, your parents and sister passed away. Leaving you all alone."
I took deep breaths as realization hit me. They were gone. Wait. "That's not something a nurse should say to comfort her patient who just had a panic attack!! What do you mean leaving me all alone?" My pulse spiked at the audacity of the nurse. How dare she debase me like that!
Her sad smile turned into a smirk. "Well, that's payback." She growled. "How dare you escape truck kun machinations. Now we have to fix all those annoying things because of you and yes, you will get your reincarnation transportation thing with a cheat just without the reincarnation transportation part." Her outfit morphed into something similar a secretary would wear as she put on glasses she pulled out of nowhere. "Can you imagine how annoying it was to change the difficulty to 3 people at the very last second? It was all carefully planned and balanced. Save the world yadda yadda collect a harem and live a peaceful life or something. Or other." She swirled around her hand in clear annoyance.
She was annoyed?! I was the one who just lost his family! Because of some idiotic plans? Before I could open my mouth she interrupted me with a chuckle. "Oh woe is me, I'm the saddest blob alive, surviving a tragedy because of some other people doing stupid things." I closed my mouth and glared at her. Her smile only seemed to widen at that. "Well, here you go. One letter is from your family after they beat the calamity on the other world and the other contains an itinerary of sorts. See it as guidelines for the future. It also contains the vast fortune you inherited and how your special ability works. Tata!" She disappeared in a cloud of smoke as I coughed.
Who does that? What is even.. you know what? Later. I grumbled as I opened up the letter from my family.
If you are reading this, we have already passed on after a gruesome death to the next world.
"What kind of idiot would start the letter with a gruesome joke?!" I shouted angrily at the sky as I stopped myself from tearing apart the letter.

I, your father, knows how traumatic that experience should have been for you, especially being left behind while we all go on a cool adventure in another world.. with overpowered cheats and lots of sexy babes hanging off of our every words.
"I wish you weren't my father." I answered the letter as all belief in the good of humanity dried out of my gaze, until they turned into a patented deadfisheyes, patent pending, state.
Of course I, your father, has gotten a harem full of babes, why yes, not only yours truly but even your mother too! Full of the most exotic otherworldly babes to ever exist.
"Yes, yes of course, next you'll tell me my sister had a harem and our pet dog Lucky who died before has been reborn and has a harem too." Annoyance filled my tone. Damn you old man, even after your death you drive me up the wall.
Your sister has found true love. It was a knight in shining white armor, with a beautiful mane of golden hair named Lucky. Oddly he was very excited to meet us, as if he knew is from a past life or something.
I put down the letter, removed the blanket covering my legs and walked towards the window. Deftly turning the handle with flexible hand moves belying my inherent agility, I ripped open the window and shouted as loud as I could. I turned back and sat down on the bed, staring at the wall for an unknown amount, before sighing and picking up the letter again.
Don't worry about us son, for we are very happy in our new life. Nothing could ever threaten us here anymore after we wiped it off the face of the ashen earth. We had to strengthen our hearts and solidify our beliefs, no matter how they tried begging for their life. No matter how much they insisted that they were but humble shepherds or how she was so sure that she was actually the princess of a foreign country. We had to follow the belief of the church to reach the top. So everyone could live in peace.
"Did you seriously genocide innocent people old man?! What do you mean insisting on being a queen! She clearly was just a queen at odds with your summoning country!!" I felt my pulse quicken again. What next? With how twisted everything is that poor princess will be isekaid into our world and I'll have to deal with her!
Love, Dad.
"That's it?! You fuck-"
P.S.: Your mum didn't care about the letter, said you were a big boy and will do fine so it's fine if she doesn't care about you anymore.
"Mother..?" Tears pooled up my eyes, my vision turned blurry as the world started spinning. This can't be true, my mother loved me with all her heart! Dad must be lying!
P.P.S: Not even your sister cared, but ai couldn't leave behind my only son to bask in his sorrow. I still regret not taking you on that father son bonding camping trip. I love you my son and hope you will be happy even without me there to watch you grow into a man with his own family.
"I take it back." I started sobbing, tears running down my cheeks. "I love you too, dad. Please be happy for me too.. in the ither world." Rubbing away the tear out of my eyes I looked over the pictures send with the letter.
I started tearing them apart, putting them into a bucket before pushing the notification button to call for a nurse. I took the pieces out of the bucket again, tearing them into even smaller pieces.
The door opened and a nurse came in, looking over my tear stricken face, with glazed over eyes and a distant look. "Is everything alright?" She asked, concern clear on her delicate features.
"Lighter. Bleach."
"Lighter? Bleach?"
"Lighter to eradicate the sin from this world and bleach to clean my eyes. Even in their death my father has to traumatize me more with pornographic pictures of him and my mother." I said with a monotone pitch, hands slightly shaking.
Her concern turned into outright pity, as she reached into her pocket to take out a pack of cigarettes and a lighter. "Heads up boyo, don't worry. Things shall get better." She said as she lit up a cigarette, giving me another one and her lighter.
Who knew a petite girl could sound like a hardboiled detective with a dark past? I lit the picture pieces on fire and inhaled the smoke of my cigarette, putting on a brooding look. I swear I could hear fangirlish squeaks in the background, but that had to be my imagination after such a traumatic event, right?

The Glyph Queen
When Winnie was thirteen, her settlement taught her how to fire a rifle. Her school practiced drills in case raiders came, and the town grew crops in their greenhouse-adapted homes, which were the only places warm enough during the worldwide nuclear winter. The Lakiran empire invades—a corporate-born nation overseen by their corporate-born queen, Victoria Paladino. They ride silent planes whose repulsion field veered bullets away. Three years of occupation later, an exemplar visits—a member of Victoria’s oversight committee rumored to read minds. He tells Winnie that she may have a unique mental power, or a flair. At the empire’s capital, the queen herself tutors Winnie to help her reach the full potential of whatever power she may have. Meanwhile, in post-war Nigeria, a streetwise teenager named Naema sees a different side of the empire. Between corruption and oppression, everyone lives in squaller. People fight over assembled food pastes. She too is told she has a unique flair, not by the empire, but by a fugitive woman who is the last vestige of an ancient witch coven, and she knows a dark secret about what the exemplars do to people like Winnie and Naema. Updates every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. The most recent chapters of The Glyph Queen are available on its main website.
