《The Reader of Souls》Vol: 1 Ch: 6 The calm before the storm

Abraham was walking down a road. A road that was completely white. On the sides of the road, there was grass. Completely white grass with purple tips. The sky was also white. But it was filled with sparkles and abstracts of different colours. Mainly purple. Abraham continued walking down the roads and found the house. The house was crooked and it looked like a child had drawn it.

Abraham ignored the house and continued walking the road. He found several more bizarre things. Trees with white barks and purple leaves that seemed to have these weird white fruits growing that looked like cocoons. Strange white creatures with deformed heads covered with purple eyes. And much more. He ignored all of them though and continued down the path.

He walked for a while before stopping in front of an enormous tree. The bark of the tree was white. And its leaves were purple. The tree was so enormous that its size couldn’t even be imagined by the human brain. A size that should not exist. Abraham saw a man that was standing near the tree and approached him. “Nice weather we have today.”

The man said casually. The man, in particular, was wearing clothes that looked like they belonged to a pirate. He wore a black robe with slight patterns of the sea and had deep blue hair. However, those were the only normal features Abraham could make out. This man had one of his eyes bulging out of their eye sockets. His head looked like it could fall off from his neck at any moment because of the big and disturbing cut. His eyes were blue. The only blue thing in this place. Apart from his hair and Abraham’s eyes that is.

There… also seemed to be some chains dripping with blood that bound this man. He had a sword on his hilt which looked extremely rusted. And… He had six arms instead of two.

The man gave off a sinister grin and pointed to the top of the tree. “The fruits have almost ripened.”

He spoke.

Abraham looked up to the place the man was pointing at but… He couldn’t see anything. There was far too much amount of fog in that area for anything to be visible. Just then this dream-like space began to crumble. It began swirling in like a wormhole and disoriented. And… Everything went dark.

“Huff Huff Huff Huff”

Abraham breathed heavily. It seemed to him like he had just woken up from a nightmare. ‘Was that a dream?’

He thought. But suddenly, he felt pressure on his neck and he had difficulty breathing. He quickly looked down and saw that his own hands were choking him. ‘What the hell.’

He moved his hands away from his neck and noticed the mark that was left. ‘I tried to kill myself in sleep? But… How is that possible? And… Why would I do that? Could it be related to that strange dream?’

He had several thoughts but most importantly, he was horrified. He felt like he was standing on the edge of a sword on top of a massive cliff. He felt that he could die at any given moment. Chills ran down his spine. ‘This world is fucking insane.’

There was nothing more he could think while he kneeled on the floor trying to catch his breath with a horrified face. ‘What the hell was that bloody dream as well… Ughh I can no longer remember any of it. Except for that damn person… he’s etched into my mind.’

Abraham got up and drank a goblet of water before heading near the door to head out.

‘...Wait what happened to that giant nightmare inducing being that we were fighting…’

He suddenly remembered the incidents that took place before he woke up in that place and got into a state of total confusion. ‘Teleportation? Right… I’ve seen Alfred use it back in the room I was in before. Perhaps that was how we escaped.’

Abraham opened the doors and headed outside to know more albeit still shivering from the incident that just happened.

He walked a few steps outside before running into someone. His skin was light and he was wearing raiment belonging to, well- this era. His hair was brown and somewhat long and his physique was quite fair. In fact he was a bit taller than Abraham. “Oh Abraham! It’s been a while. How have you been?”

The man spoke in an eager voice. This made Abraham quite confused as he had never seen him before. “Have we met before?”

The man smiled and replied “Of course. It’s me. Vincent.”

There was a long silence in the room. Abraham just kept staring at Vincent with disbelief. Not a single sound could be heard. “Prove it.”

He spoke. The man smiled and replied back to him. “Want to know what happened on June 22nd?”

“Shut up.” Abraham spoke with a smile on his face. They laughed and chatted together for a while walking through what seemed to be a rural town. “Vincent. Were you responsible for our transmigration?”

“Sort of. Anyways follow me, I need to show you something.”

“What is this place?” Abraham asked.

“It’s a type of church. Although it’s not that great since people around here move all the time, it is still quite nice I guess.” Abraham and Vincent stood in front of a statue without a face. The statue was situated in a room resembling a church, however, it was all made of stone and wasn't particularly well built. ”Vincent. About my question earlier…”

“I do. I made a contract. With ‘him’.”

“‘Him’? Do you mean the god these people worship? And what were the details of the contract? And which one exactly is “Him””

“I… Don’t remember. I just know that ‘He’ wasn't particularly… Well, how should I explain it, he didn't feel like a god. I remember talking to him. Being surprised at his appearance. But about how he looked or what we talked about….”

“I don’t remember any of it…”

“I see. Oh well tell me if you ever remember any of it.”

“I sure will.”

Abraham felt a strange feeling. It was as if… He had forgotten something. He didn’t care too much about it though.

Suddenly a change occurred in Abraham.

A month later.

“Hurry up. We're almost at the gate” Abraham spoke, wiping off the sweat on his face. “Damn it… Why is this body so weak?”

Vincent grumbled. He had become extremely tired from walking around the entire village located near the church’s base so many times. “Why do we have to patrol too? Aren’t we supposed to be the special guests?”

“Stop complaining and hurry up. What have you even been doing for the past month we've been here?” Abraham taunted Vincent. Vincent had spent most of his time researching this world’s technology and trying to combine it with theirs. During this, he didn’t give much time to his physical strength.

“Well, one of us needed to do that job! We can’t just abandon all we had learned from our previous lives can we? I just didn’t have enough time.” Vincent quickly caught up to Abraham while complaining. “That’s true I suppose.”

“Anyways, we’re almost there. Hurry up.”

They continued walking through the muddy path surrounded by trees. The forest itself was not that dense. However, it was full of life and green. There were also some water puddles on the ground and the leaves were wet. It seemed to have rained recently. It was quite calm. There was a certain smell in the air- The smell of dirt after the rain. Overall, it was extremely peaceful. There were also a few regular birds around! And some ācweorna on the tree!

However… Abraham noticed something strange. “Vincent. Is this what I think this is?”

“Yeah… They seem to be footprints of the residents of the cursed lands.” They spotted a footprint slightly bigger than an average human. However, It was not like a human. Its shape was more like that of a wolf, but it still had some human-like characteristics. The footprints didn’t seem to be that old either. It had rained just yesterday. ‘This could be bad’

Abraham quickly took out a card from his bag and stood still for a while. ‘Alright. Now I just need to push some mana in this card. And it'll be done’

Some small patterns appeared in the air. Floating around Abraham’s hands. These are the ‘runes’ created through several generations of research to make the usage of mana easier. However, these runes weren't stable. They kept breaking apart. ‘He may not be able to do it…’

Vincent thought. He became quite worried. The problem they were in right now, was that they did not know when they would be attacked. “Abraham. Let’s just go to the gate. It’s nearby… we can ask help from the guards there.”

“And what if they have already been slain? It will only make sense that the enemy kills the gate guards and occupies it to try and block off the exits. Don’t worry Vincent. I got this.” Abraham spoke in a desperate voice. He had slowly begun doubting himself since he isn’t particularly good at using magic. But fortunately, The runes were soon completed and the card disappeared.

“It’s a success!” Vincent exclaimed. He honestly hadn’t been expecting Abraham to pull it off. And was planning to make a run for it.

Huff huff

“They should be here any second now” Abraham responded after panting. His face was dripping from sweat. And he was holding his head with his hands. “Does your head hurt?”

They heard a familiar voice from behind them. “Yes. But more importantly, look at these footprints.”

Abraham showed the footprints they had found earlier to Alfred. “Good job. You stopped a potential tragedy from occurring at this place.”

“Alfred. Handle the rest, please. I have faith in you.”

“Do not worry. I can handle the rest. I think” Alfred responded calmly. It seemed that nothing was wrong with the way he spoke. But his expression said otherwise.
