When we descended the stairs some things became immediately obvious. Firstly that there was an Elder Aspect active in this dungeon, secondly that we were in the Core Level and finally that we were in for the fight out of lives.

Suffice it to say that this was easily our toughest fight. Nearly 2x as many enemies, a heavily reduced range advantage, lots of enemy control effects, a pile of health to grind down, and plenty of mana for their advanced abilities. The only thing that saved us was the traditional 40m spread between melee lines. Well and that only the weakest enemies had the full 30m range for Light spells.

We actually started off with nearly the same actions as in our last fight. But we might be making some small alterations for later phases. We couldn't afford to get sloppy. We decided to position the Treant and the Shieldmaiden 1 slot out such that every Brute would be at least targetable by one melee party member.
The Kobolds charged forward at top speed frothing to get into range. The weakest mages would be able to attack us after a mere 4s. 3 phases to move and 1 for their attacks to finish. At least the 3 top tier mages would be in Jolt range since their Light Aspect range bonus was diluted by other Aspects. The Light Bringers could sit in range of our melee units but beyond our mages and just spam damage. At least Protective Aura would restrict them from abusing their fastest spell.

We repeated nearly all the same second phase actions as before. I considered trying to Haste the Arcanist or the Cleanser but I really wanted the mana savings from Roiling Ground. The real question was how to handle all the damn Brutes. At least their Light damage was helpfully negated by a protection spell we needed anyways for their mages.
The Kobolds covered another 5-10m with bloodlust clear in their eyes.

I Accelerate the Arcanist to begin stunning mages. 2 other spells finish at the end of the turn and the Crusher is on standby to preserve Alacrity mana. I plan to Haste her next turn instead of the Cleanser. Acid Splash with the boosted range from Mana Channeling will hit the middle 5 Gleaming Brutes next turn.
The Kobolds continued their advance.

I accelerate the Crusher. With Static Field and Forest Heart active there is a 20% reduction in the mana cost of Alacrity. Crucial to keep the Crusher operating at full efficiency. Next turn with Revitalize on her she'll have 66 mana to abuse. Absorb and Acid Splash finish. The Treant casts Amber Armor knowing she'll have the mana for a Grasping Roots next turn. The Eruptor casts her own Mana Well since it is a turn early for Lava Rain. The Arcanist begins the unenviable task of stalling the crap out of the top tier enemy mages. 2 seconds on the Lightning Chieftan and a Void Mage.

Acid Splash was Acid which was Dark/Water/Fire which meants a 15% cosr reduction from Domains and 7% from Mana Efficiency for 40*.78=31 mana. It would deal Base(20)+Warm Air(5)+Static Field(5)+Mana Manipulation(4)+Wand(5)=39-20/2=29 damage to the middle 5 of the 7 Brutes. Then it would have 5+3(Mana Permanence)=8s of 5 dot damage. The Brutes were now in range to attack on their next phase. 2 Light Bringers could attack now, while the other 2 had to move forward because they were too far sideways. Light Ray would actually be completely negated by Protective Aura and Absorb. They were forced to cast either their 2s or move forward 5 more to cast their AoE. Sadly with 20 LGT RES and significant stacks of Physical Absorbtion, which provided halved protection from magic, Sunbeam Spellbomb would be pretty ineffective. The Treant and the Shieldmaiden actually had +10 MGC ABS from their armor and a 10% boost of ABS overall. It just hadn't come into play until now. In previous fights the Crusher took all the magic damage and her armor was different. So in the end 2 Light Bringers started their 2 second attack Solar Blast. 1 each on The Treant and The Shieldmaiden. 2 simple moved into position to do the same next turn.

I cast Quicken on myself and the Cleanser cast Revitalize on the Crusher. She was just so critical to our control strategy and the Arcanist was doing better mana wise. The Arcanist cast one Jolt on the other Void Mage and 1 on the Lightning Chieftain. Next turn she'd cast 1 each on both void mages. The control resistance was quite brutal for our party. Whole turns of control were being absorbed. The Eruptor cast Lava Rain with her last second of Haste. Time to pile on the damage. The Miasmist lacked Haste and really only had the option to Infect. Without Haste her damage stacking was brutally slow. Sadly DoT mages only really picked up a couple extra talents in. She targeted the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Brutes from the left. The Shieldmaiden didn't have a lot of good options. Mostly just Shield Bash. Guardian Angel helped the Treant a lot but penalized her pretty hard. Not that most of her spells would have helped much. She Shield Bashed the farthest right Brute. It dealt a whopping 3 damage with no buffs but she consumed his resistance and added 1s of Stun. At least Static Field and Roiling Ground would start to deal damage on the next enemy Phase. Finally the Treant spent 53 mana to stall the left most 3 Brutes for a turn. Not ideal but not mana options. Bash would just be ignored by their resistance.
Finally it was time for the Crusher to take action. She could either stall the 3 closest enemies or try to take 1 down. In the end considering the control issues she opted to focus her attacks on a single enemy each turn. She would not be able to chase mages but she'd eventually keep her 3 enemies perma locked. She attacked the Brute just right of center 3 times. Bludgeon added a whopping 11s of stun for 45 mana. She also dealt Hammer(10)+Might(10)+Bracelet*2(10)+Brawn/2(10)+Brutality(7)=47-20=27*3=81 physical damage and 10-5=5*3=15 magic damage. 96 damage and 11 seconds of stun was wild for 45 mana. Granted she had stacked 4 buffs to pull it off.

Lava Rain dealt 39-20/2=29 damage to all enemies. It would tick for a 4th second thanks to Mana Permanence. It could hit 5 enemies with the boosted 9m AoE from Mana Channeling. Each of the middle 5 Brutes took 34 from ENV and DoTs combined. Unfortunately for the party while Static Field did a solid 5 mgc dmg Roiling Ground merely zeroed out the ABS after applying the bonus to magic damage of 50% penetration. At least Static Field hit all 7 enemies.
2 Brutes were ready to attack, while 2 Light Bringers would finish and 2 would start. Luckily Light Bringers had no control or we'd be in real trouble. 40 LGT and 40 PHYS header to both the Treant and the Shieldmaiden. The Treant had 22 ABS plus a 20% bonus from her own skills. She had 26 from Absorb as well and 10 from Armor + another 10% and 5 from Defensive Line. That was 63*1.3=81.9=82. She had 1.28*20=25.6=26+10 Magic ABS from her armor and Protective Aura modified by Harden. Sadly %ABS didn't modify the magic version. Solar Blast dealt 40 and 40 meaning 40 ABS nullified the physical damage and 36+21=57 nullified the magical. It seemed like the Light Bringers couldn't even harm the Treant. A costly waste of 2s and 50 mana.
The Shieldmaiden had the same 36 MABS but only 26+10+5+5=46 base physical armor and a 10% modifier making it 51. She took 0 physical and 36+11/2=41 taking no damage. Also basically untouchable by the Light Bringers. Sadly 2 more of the fools had already started to cast. Well no one said Kobolds were geniuses. One Gleaming Brute had also attacked the Shieldmaiden dealing 0 damage for 30 mana but getting a Stun off. She'd be stuck for a turn. It would foolishly try the longer 2s higher damage 2s stun next turn freeing her.
A final Brute attempted to attack the Crusher. It used the most powerful 2s strike attack with 2s of stun. It didn't know she had 2s of control resistance. It would probably deal some raw damage since she lacked the armor magic abs boost and the physical component was a full 80, but nothing relevant. I haven't displayed the healing factor on the party sheet yet since it hasn't been needed. You can thank me for saving your eyes later. Suffice it to say that unless we lose the control battle we will not take meaningful long term damage.

I cast Accelerate on the Miasmist hoping that DoT immunity to absorbtion, ABS, could carry the day. A final double Jolt connected with the 2 void mages. She didn't have the mana to keep it up so I avoided re-Hasting her. Infect finished though it'd take another turn to start ticking. The Eruptor had almost no good options even if she had had Haste. In the end a Sear was cast on the Brute to the left of the Crusher. A good Crunch and 2 Bludgeons would lock it up and prepare it for heavy malady damage. Since Sear was an Ash spell it was discounted to 63% and dealt 10 bonus damage. 32 mana for 40 damage and a mark. And it cast in a single turn. Revitalize finished on the Crusher to keep her mana up. The Maiden would be freed from stun next phase. The Treant had a mere 33 mana, not enough to do much. She bashed in the end for Brawn/2(9)+Ferocity(14)+Bash(10)=33-20=13 damage. Couldn't even apply a stun.
Finally it came to the Crusher again. With only 39 mana she was forced to attack the middle Brute wtih 3 basic attacks for 91 damage and only 5 seconds of Stun. The Crunch/Double Bludgeon on the leftward Kobold would have to wait a turn.

The main mages continue to be useless thanks to Jolt. Sadly all but 2 Brutes are free to attack. 2 Light Bringers finish wasting their time. 2 more begin to attempt attacks on the Crusher. 3 Brutes begin to attack the Treant. They all use their best move. 2 Brutes do the same to the Shieldmaiden who will be permalocked. 39 to 5 and 5 to 2 for the damage to the Brutes. Plus 91 damage to the central Brute.

The main 3 mages still held down. Only 3 Brutes able to act. 1 finished his attack on the Shieldmaiden. 2 finish their attacks on the Treant. The Shieldmaiden takes 4 magic damage and a painful 29 physical damage. She is stunned for 2 seconds. The Treant takes 6 magical and 0 physical damage and 3 seconds of stun. We are in serious danger now. 2 Lightbringers begin attacks on the Crusher. 2 finish them. It is very lucky that the Light Bringers in both cases didn't get to see their allied spells finishing on our frontliners before they had to start casting. They wasted a total of 8s of action on the Treant and Shieldmaiden. How would things go on the Crusher? 40 magical and 40 physical. The Crusher had 5 and 5 ABS from Robustness and Defensive Line. She had 26 from Absorbtion and 5 from Amber Armor. That was 41. She had 10 more from armor. 51 armor and 26 magical protection. The Crusher blocked all 40 physical damage and donated 11=5 protection so she took 18 magical damage. She'd take another 18 next turn. Laughable when she had Amber Armor(5)+Vigor Crest(5)+Forest Heart(5)+Revitalize(5) of Recovery. Sadly the multiple Revitalizes don't stack their recovery affect. Sadly the other front liners were still in danger especially if the main mages finally outlasted the control. Or the Brutes went hard. An extra Brute attack was available next turn.

I cast Stagnation on the farthest left Brute right away. We needed to break these stun chains and he'd take 4 turns to land his attack now. The Arcanist Jolted the right most Gleaming Brute since it was in the middle of an attack. We had to free the Maiden. Absorb was almost gone. Given the middle situation the Crusher attacks the middle Brute and lands a double Bludgeon then moves right next to the Maiden. While in most cases you can't both move and act since an action takes the full second, Haste and/or Alacrity can provide a loophole since they are extra action buffs. Applying 54 damage and 7 seconds of Stun will keep the central Brute out of the fight for a long time. Relatively speaking obviously.
The 3 central Brutes have 9, 11, and 9 seconds of control effects on them meaning they are currently quite harmless. The farthest right Brute has 3 seconds. Next turn the Crusher will hammer the second Brute which will be in the middle of an attack and get him out of commission as well. That will allow the Shieldmaidento cast Absorb and then Shieldbash in time to keep the far right Brute locked up.
Really the Arcanist should have Jolted a right side Brute ealier. Would have saved the Shieldmaiden 2 turns and some heavy damage. She was probably afraid of not keeping the Void mages and their heavy control locked down. We risk dropping Protective Aura as well which is brutal. The Miasmist drops Envenom on the heavily marked Brute. The Eruptor begins a 2 turn Suffocation cast. That damage will be quite intense.

Their mana will burn out in 3 more attacks each but that is a long way off. 1 Brute prepares to attack the Shieldmaiden. 2 of the main mages remain controlled but 1 is free. He moves 5m to get into spell range. The Crusher took 18 magical damage from the 2 Light Bringers who cast blind last phase. 2 Light Bringers are free to move or attack. They move 5m to get into backline range.

I cast Quicken on myself to regain Haste. The Arcanist casts Jolt on a a Void Mage. Suffocation finished and the Shieldmaiden is almost free for Absorb. Barely in time. The Treant has 1s. He'll get hit by 2 more soon. The Miasmist casts Envenom again. The Crusher is on her last second of both Haste and Alacrity. She prepares and executes exactly 3 Bludgeons costing all 45 of her mana. She deals 81 damage and applies 11 seconds of Stun to the Brute halfway through his attack. Finally the Cleanser is forced to cast Unbind on the Treant. He will take another 1s of control in the upcoming enemy phase meaning Unbind will clear 2s and leave him able to cast Grasping Roots to stall his enemies. It cost 50 mana.

A Void Mage walks forward. The Chieftain starts to cast Lightning Burst on the front line. Another Void Mage needs 1 more turn for Void Chains. 2 Lightbringers need another turn for Sunbeam Spellbomb. 2 finish casting it. Both Spellbombs fail to damage the frontliners in range. Each backline mage takes 50-Aura(20)-Robe(10)=20. The Cleanser in range of both also takes 20 due to having Absorb(20/2).

The Crusher uses 2 Bludgeons to add 3s of control 2 to a Void Mage and a Light Bringer. I Accelerate her. The Cleanser Revitalizes the Arcanist. The Miasmist casts Gloom while the Bashers Bash. Jolt hits the other Void Mage. The Eruptor Sears the second left most Brute.
In the end we have the ability to permanently lock down 2 Brutes, kill a third, and wait for 2 to die. That leaves us only with the mages. The Crusher can lock down 3. The Cleanser plus the Arcanist can lock down the other 2. It takes 3 turns to deal 40 damage while the mages heal 10 a turn. We eventually kill all the Kobolds. Some of our mages were below half health and I ran out of mana for Hasting but we did it.
We all grabbed the Dungeon Core and a bright blue light flared overtaking our vision. We came to our sense about 20 minutes later, which is a bit scary your first time, and sat down in the core room to discuss things. Needless to say everyone was super excited especially given the kind of Dungeon we had found. This was definitely an auspicious start to our adventures. None of us would ever forget this early day.
