《Cross Roads: God's Reminder (Book Two)》Chapter 16

The next morning in New York City, Rahkaze decided to go to Mordechai’s apartment and surprise him. He used his spare emergency key to gain access to his apartment only to find nothing. It appears he hasn’t been home since yesterday. It didn’t really take him long to find him since Mordechai was already at Zayne Enterprises. Mordechai was tending to his wounds he sustained last night with the help of Sylvia.

“Usually, you are late, Mordechai. I hope at least got some sleep last night,” Sylvia said while sewing up his open wound.

“Well, let’s just say things have become more complicated as of late,” Mordechai defended.

“Welcome to election season, may I?” Sylvia offered.

“Sure,” Mordechai watch as Sylvia reached over to her medical bag and pulled out some medicated gauze. She disinfected the area and began to wrap up the wound. Amazingly to her surprise, Mordechai didn’t flinch at all.

“I thought your gear was resistant towards tearing,” Sylvia making small talk.

“My latest upgrade will be better at being tear-resistant. Along with being bulletproof,” Mordechai announced. “Also, my gear will have Draconite ore woven into it, so my aura will be completely undetectable and negate weaker magical attacks.”

“But not monster bites?” Sylvia teased.

“It was a dog last time. However, I would avoid being bitten altogether from now on,” Mordechai answered.

“Was it a demon dog?” Sylvia questioned.

“No, just a huge dog,” Mordechai clarified.

“I’ll check on your order. Better play it safe today and take some rest. You have been at it three days straight,” Sylvia suggested as she walked over to the monitors, surveying the city.

Meanwhile, Rahkaze shows up in Mordechai’s office. As always, he decides to be more lighthearted about the situation, “here he is! The talk of the town.”

“Yeah, for all the wrong reasons,” Mordechai dreaded as he was gingerly putting back on his shirt, not before Rahkaze took a good look at his injuries. Mordechai was sporting a black eye, a bruised torso, and a bitten arm.

“Shit, man! What the hell happened to you?!” Rahkaze wondered.

“Crooked cops… Old mysterious men… Dogs…” Mordechai summarized.

“I remember. You’re not really a dog lover,” Rahkaze mentioned.

“Oh, I do love dogs when they don’t try to kill me,” Mordechai joked as Rahkaze laughed.

“Good point.”

Mordechai tried to walk around, but he was still sore, “they’re at it again, brother. They are more of them popping up this time. I forgot to mention that. The other night, these ‘pretenders’ were carrying tasers and shotguns.”

Hearing this news, all Rahkaze could do was shake his head, “I just don’t get it. Besides her good looks and incredible banging body, what makes Natalia so appealing to others? Her personality is equivalent of dog shit.”

“Many men like that sort of thing,” Mordechai defended. “Being unapproachable yet desirable.”

Rahkaze scoffed at the idea, “You mean introverted male losers? Please… I would rather have my dick fried off and be burned alive afterward than to ever go near that swamp. Forcibly over two billion served, like McDonald’s.”

“That’s a bit emo, don’t you think, Johnny Razorblades?” Sylvia teased out loud.

“Oh, be quiet and--” Rahkaze looked over his shoulder only to see Sylvia hasn’t gotten over her bad habits. “Are you watching cartoons again?!”

Knowing she was caught, Sylvia tried to make an excuse, “no, I’m not. What I am doing is surveying a doctor, and he is doing lab experiments with her son and his dog--”

“THAT IS AN EPISODE OF ADVENTURE TIME, SYLVIA! TURN THAT SHIT OFF!” Rahkaze demanded. “And as for you, brother, you can forget about training. Go home and get some rest for a few days.”

“And give the Red Arrow the upper hand? Right now, there is a civil war brewing in that organization, and innocent people are being caught in the crossfire. Even with their old leader in custody, there will be some resistance.”

“And you want to be that substitute?” Rahkaze probed. “Let the goth-punk detective and her old manhandle the strays. The hard part’s over. Shayna’s in custody. The whole world can go without Memento Dark for a few days. You’re not some avenging angel or what others who claim you to be. You do have limits, Mordechai.”

“And every limit that I discover, I will try to break it,” Mordechai said with determination as this worries his older brother.

“I know. You’re just like mother. But even she knew when enough is enough and had to step away for a while. What you need to do now is to focus not only on fighting for everyone’s freedom and safety but your own.”

“Perhaps that is why I am Memento, and you’re not?”

Rahkaze was taken aback by his younger brother’s passive-aggressive insult, “I would have, but I could never have been what she wanted me to be even if I tried. The price was too high for me. But it doesn’t mean you should throw away your own life or happiness. It’s not worth that kind of sacrifice.”

Mordechai never really meant to insult his brother. He was genuinely sarcastic. Mordechai’s sense of humor has never been his strong point. Knowing this common error, he corrected himself, “you don’t have to worry about me, and I’ve always thought you would have been great as the next Memento, always being the worrywart and a perfectionist.”

Rahkaze shook his head, forgiving his brother’s failed attempt at humor, “I have to be worrisome since everyone around here doesn’t give a shit.”

With a pat on the head, Rahkaze left his brother to get dressed. Rahkaze knew in his heart that one day, Mordechai will hit that wall. It’s just a matter of time. And when he does, he and his loved ones will catch him. For now, Mordechai knows he is not invincible and does have limits. But just like every genius, he has a blind spot.

“Hey, boys! You have got to see this! Your baby girl is on the news again, Kaz!” Sylvia hollered out.

The two brothers walked to the workstation as Sylvia played a YouTube video of Jocelyn and what happened to her last night: “At this point, we do not know what truly happened to Assistant District Attorney Jocelyn Shane last night, but with leaked medical reports say that she had an injury to the left knee and the three broken ribs.”

Suddenly, the YouTube video stopped playing, but it did show footage of her being carried out on a gurney last night. Sylvia looked away from the screen as she tries her hardest not to laugh but hysterically does.

Naturally, Mordecai was mortified by Sylvia’s actions, “Why are you laughing?! That’s horrible!”

“Finally, that bitch got what she deserved…” Rahkaze scoffed.

“By getting mugged a couple of intruders in her own home?! What if it was any of you?” Mordecai contradicted, being the voice of reason.

“According to Reddit forums in New York, it was a house invasion,” Sylvia reported. “However, there was no sign of breaking and entering. The locks on the door were intact and never tampered with.”

“So, she was attacked in a place she should have felt the safest. In which, we shouldn’t be jumping for joy,” Mordecai contemplated limping back and forth. “And that’s just plain nonsense with the locks not being tampered with. With the right tools and skills, you can get in anywhere unnoticeably. Highly unlikely, but she is an Assistant District Attorney… Maybe she was attacked by somebody that she knew… Sylvia, where there any working security cameras--?”

“No, little brother! This is not your business! Let them handle it. You’ve already been beaten to shit!” Rahkaze rejected.

“No one on the police force is going to help Shane!” Mordecai pushed forward. “They all hate her as much as you do. Despite your feelings, she is still an officer of the court, Kaz.”

“Morrie, please go home. And get some rest…” Rahkaze demanded.

“Fine, but when I get back, I want those surveillance tapes,” Mordecai relents.

“Sorry, Morrie. They don’t have any. But they do have a doorman,” Sylvia replied.

“They have a doorman, but no surveillance cameras. Did they at least question--?”

“MORRIE, PLEASE GO HOME!” Rahkaze demanded again.

Mordecai shrugged his shoulders, “Okay! You don’t have to yell, brother. I am going…” Mordechai surrendered as he limped towards the elevator.
