《[NaNoWriMo] Masqueraider of Dofus: Incarnam》Chapter 1: Proving His Worth

*FWOOOSSHH!*
A bright light shone and a whirling portal opened as a young man of about 18 years of age stepped through. The young man was skinny with wild, blood red hair and black eyes. His beige colored skin showed that the young man spent an adequate amount of time out in the sun. The young man wore a white clown-like mask with a red pointy nose and red decorations below the eyes. He wore a black tunic with gold linings and a black and gold trousers held up by a golden rope-like belt with two white skulls dangling by his right hip. He wore black leggings and black socks, and walked in golden brown sandals. If people didn't know any better, they would have assumed he was a traveling street performer.
The young man was known as Kryse Shadowclaw, fifth son of Aladen Shadowclaw the Head of the Shadowclaw family. Because Kryse was born as the fifth son, there wasn't any inheritance left to give. So, Kryse decided to travel the world in search of his own way of living and obtain his own living expenses. During his travels, he received news that the world of Dofus was in danger and help was sorely needed everywhere, especially in the vast continent of Amakna. So, Kryse decided to enlist himself. Now people may wonder what this young man could offer to the table...well, what they didn't know was that Kryse was a Masqueraider warrior. He has the ability to draw power from the masks he wore in order to provide a range of fighting styles. Anyways, once Kryse had enlisted, he was directed to Incarnam, a bright and bustling village.
Upon arriving, he gazed around and took in the wondrous and peaceful landscapes. Suddenly, an eagle beastman wearing green and black leather armor with brown gauntlets and brown leg guards approached him.

"Hello, I presume you are Kryse? My name is Apro Simate. Thanks for coming in our time of need. I welcome you to Incarnam."
"Thanks." Kryse replied.
"Come, follow me. We must make haste to the village." Apro motioned as he left the summoning portal. Kryse nodded in understanding before following after him.
Along the way, they chanced upon a monster known as the Incarnam Scarecrow. This monster wasn't strong at all...just a level 1. Apro asked Kryse if he would be able to defeat it. He said he wanted to see if Kryse had the capabilities Incarnam was in dire need of. Kryse smirked and assured Apro that this was an easy task. He then charged forward towards the monster. Fortunately, the Incarnam Scarecrow did not notice Kryse until the young Masqueraider was right in front of him. Taking advantage of the surprise, Kryse threw a punch at the monster. As expected of a weak monster, the single punch from Kryse knocked the monster flying...it seemed like one more punch from Kryse and the monster would be defeated. As Kryse lunge forward for another punch, the scarecrow spun around, dodging the attack and followed with a counterattack of its own. The weak monster could not faze Kryse one bit. Kryse charged in with another punch, however, the monster leaped back just in time to lessen the damage done. Deciding it was time to end it, Kryse pulled out his Martelo mask and put it on. As the power flowed into him, Kryse jumped towards the Incarnam Scarecrow and executed a front-flip heel-kick combo into the monster. This move was subtly named as Martelo after the mask that was worn and had the special abilities of stealing health from a target and preventing the target's ability to dodge effectively. With this strong attack, the monster collapsed into a heap of rubble.

Seeing Kryse defeat the monster, Apro clapped his hands in admiration. "An excellent battle. At least I know you can defeat low-leveled monsters. But, how well can you fare against a more formidable opponent? You see that monster over there? Show me you can defeat it."
"Hmm...that one? Very well."
"Here, take this shield and sword. It may prove to be useful."
Kryse grabbed the items Apro provided him with and rushed towards the new enemy. As he approached the monster, he saw that it was a Lupus Minimus - a golden brown furred werewolf. However, this monster was alert and quick to see the approaching young Masqueraider. Kryse stopped his charge and approached the monster cautiously. He put on his Coward mask which increased his ability to dodge but prevented him from using any weapons. He knew it would be stupid of him to rush in recklessly...especially against a stronger enemy. As Kryse edged towards the monster, he was caught off guard when the werewolf rushed in and slashed at him with its claws.
However, it was fortunate that Kryse had decided to wear the Coward mask before going into battle. With a sidestep, Kryse dodged the werewolf's attack. Next, Kryse threw in an attack of his own. The punch landed squarely on the werewolf's cheek, knocking it down. The werewolf scrambled to its feet and attacked. This time, it was able to hurt Kryse. The slash, though shallow, wounded Kryse and left him bleeding. The young Masqueraider decided it was time to end it. He switched his Coward mask with his Martelo mask and heel-kicked the werewolf. With Martelo's special ability activated, Kryse was able to regenerate some of his lost health and the slash wound closed. The young Masqueraider did not give the werewolf any time to regroup as he switched his mask once again with his Reinforcement mask. This mask allowed him to both deal damage to the target and knock it back. Using the Reinforcement skill, Kryse kicked the werewolf and knocked it back, killing it.
When Kryse approached Apro after his victory, Apro replied. "Wonderful, you're definitely ready to help Incarnam."
"That's right. Now, no time to lose, let's go."
With that, Kryse and Apro hurried towards Incarnam. There were a few more Incarnam Scarecrows and Lupus Minimus along the way but nothing Kryse couldn't handle. Like how he defeated the two types of monsters earlier, Kryse fought and won against the other monsters. After an hour of traveling and battling, the duo finally arrived at Incarnam.
"I can only guide you here. I need to head back and wait for the other recruits. I'll see you later then. If you have any questions, ask around." Apro explained as he bid the young Masqueraider farewell.
"Okay. Bye."

Leftover Apocalypse
[Participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge] This is a story about the newly-adult Calliope Smith having a terrible day that ends in her getting mysteriously teleported from Phoenix, Arizona to a fantasy world where her life is in constant danger. She considers this an upgrade. Someone evil is looking for her, and she doesn't know why. Someone who seems to know a lot about her has promised they'll help her, but she doesn't know who they are. All that matters to Callie is that magic is real and one way or another she's going to learn it. The end of the world is coming up, sure, but Callie won't need to worry about that. In fact, by the time she even finds out about it one of the doomsday devices will already be destroyed, and the authorities will be well on the way to dealing with the other one. It's fine. Everything will be smooth sailing. Almost certainly. Probably. Chapters are usually about 2500-3500 words, and the goal is to post 2-3 per week but I sometimes get busy or have some writers block. It's your standard portal fantasy / Isekai premise, but unlike some the main character's time on Earth and how she got pulled into another world will (eventually) be explored. Some slight GameLit-feeling stuff later, no menus or level-ups but there's something suspiciously like a skill tree when the magic system gets going. No number crunching, and while the main character will get to do some silly stuff she won't be a god like in some fics (and will in fact spend a lot of time being badly outclassed by her enemies). Some reader interaction, ranging from adding to the worldbuilding to occasionally making big important decisions about skill progression. Please note that the main character is flawed and impulsive, and will make some stupid decisions. That's part of the story, but I get that it's not for everyone. Trigger Warnings: Foster care system references, crappy parenting. Some mental health adjacent stuff, specifically the main character has some issues where she experiences varying levels of empathy and emotional vulnerability depending on the day (it's complicated and not meant to portray any real-world conditions). Occasional violence including mention of death and grievous bodily harm, but no detailed descriptions of gore.
