《There Is A Monster Among Us》Chapter 19: Fingerpointing (II)

"To glory and victory!"
My shout rings true. As Pink's senior officer, I bravely take the first step. Since Yellow here is the first person to unsheathe their blade, I decide that he will be my target.
Pink, on the other hand, shall have to face Red.
Yellow and I exchange blows, blocking and dodging when we see fit. After an overhead swing from Yellow misses, I take advantage of his open side. However, I barely miss the gap of his armor at the armpit and only have my sword bounce off of the metal. With potential blunders on both our parts, we pull away from each other, pausing to a defensive stance.
My fight is equal so far. We have no blood drawn, and neither of us is yet exhausted. Unfortunately, military tactics generally dictate that a battle in equilibrium does not look good at all. Who is to say for sure that the opponent will make the first mistake after all?
Pink, meanwhile, is visibly overpowering Red. That is a relief on my part. The faster Pink neutralizes Red, the quicker she can reach to assist me.
Captain Greene is still confused at the echoing battle, while White seems to be the same for some reason.
I am thankful that White has not yet entered the fray, though. That will be bad news if he does.
Nonetheless, I have this uneasy feeling. With Yellow several feet away from me, I risk looking behind my back.
There, I see Orange, the maid, staring at me with a dagger in hand. My heart skips a beat in horror. Yes, she's a beauty, but that's beside the point. Withal, it registers in my mind two things as Yellow charges at me at that opportunity.
Dodging Yellow with a sidestep so that Yellow, Red, and Orange are all in my vision, I realize that Orange is not going after me in the first place.

My observation is that (a) Orange is closer to Capt. Greene than I. And (b) she is still slowly but surely nearing the stunned ship captain while observing everyone.
Orange is targeting Capt. Greene!
"Captain!" I shout, snapping Capt. Greene's focus to me. I swiftly point my finger at the maid. "Look out for the maid!"
At that moment, I hear Orange click her tongue before running towards the naval officer, who is fumbling at his belt for the cutlass.
I fear that Yellow won't let me, but shall I come to the rescue?

The Dungeon Child
Argus was a dungeon, sprawling for miles under the cities of man above all the way until a human, angry at the death of one of his companions, murdered him. When he discovered where he was, he found that he had come back to life as nothing more or less than a human being, complete with its own nervous system, organs, and brain. Worst of all, his precious System is gone, and he has to actually grow up. How disgusting.
8 233Vast Asleep
The story of Kingard the Binder in the aftermath of Broken This short story is the epilogue of Broken, the second book of the Chronicles of Mother's Gate series. It’s a great follow-up to the novel, a bonus story that adds extra layers but is set apart from the full-length narrative. Vast Asleep follows the story of Kingard, who finds himself caught in a world called Mother's realm, bathed in glowing light but strangely stuck in place. He encounters his greatson Varyan there, and learns that his experiences are likely dreams. As he grows more accustomed to the loving realm around him, Kingard remembers fear and trepidation about the face of the world, and he loses contact with his companion. This story answers the question, Is Kingard really dead? with a tentative no, and new mysteries brewing. It also raises the question, What's happening while he's awake? and includes an excerpt from the sister story Ride Awake, about Kingard's situation with the Colkh'rak. Praise for Tales of the Known World Bookends: Loved it. The difference between the two stories is great! The difference between the epilogue and prologue is astounding. So much light and love in the first story. You feel safe reading it. Healing. The second, so much darkness, pain and despair. The choice of vocabulary is awesome and makes an impact. And this set of short stories ties the two books together so well. -- Dana V. of Texas ★★★★★
