《The Black》Public Log Entry 6

We arrived at Rin yesterday. There was a funeral procession, but it was not the soldier's body they were carrying. Only an empty wooden box. The family was told that the casket's sealing function had malfunctioned, and it was unable to be opened. It wasn't really a lie, but not the truth either.
The real caskets were burned. The medical officers on board as well as the captain saw no other alternative. They were thrown into the incinerator. The captain gave them what honor he could, though, and burned them alone. No trash or waste along with it. After, the ashes were jettisoned into space. That was honorable, I think. The fake funeral procession I don't think was. Take it as you will. There is something brewing and I think I may be in the middle of it.
I have managed not to get sick from what I had found in those caskets. Several others can't claim to be so lucky, even though they weren't anywhere near the caskets. The medical staff think they may have had contact with the second wave of infected or something that any of the infected had contact with themselves. Regardless, they are being quarantined. Anybody that is showing any kind of symptom related to what was happening is getting the same treatment. But wait, it gets better.
Remember how I said that some of the men that were sick were getting better? Their vitals stabilized in the days after we had left Kyou. We're getting reports now of more infected. Not only that, but those that were recovering have started acting 'strange' as the medical staff of Kyou reported. It started with the occasional unwanted and unjustified touch. A thank you from them to the medical staff with the slight touch of their hand to the arm of the attendee. Several of the medical staff had gotten the same sickness, as well as reports of what I had told the captain. Most of those that do not make it deteriorate into puddles of pink and green mounds and tendrils. They've begun to speculate that the transmission is by touch and possibly airborne.

The latest news from Kyou is that the situation is rapidly deteriorating. Those that had gotten better went from passive and thankful to outright aggression. I saw a holo-vid of a news reporter say that a 'mysterious sickness has taken over a major residential district on the planet' and that medical staff are 'taking precautions to contain the outbreak'. Several staff and civilians have died due to this aggression, and those that showed they would be unwilling to back down were shot. Several times.
This might be the start of something we have not yet experienced. My imagination is running wild with this. When I was younger I read stories about zombies and plagues that destroyed worlds but it was all just fiction. If some new infection was seriously out there it could mean the end of the space corps if it isn't contained. I know that the upper ranks of government have plans for things like this, regardless of how far-fetched they are, but surely nobody takes it seriously.
Who knows. Maybe it's all just a hoax and it'll be done in a couple months. But then again, maybe what I was finding on the ship was just the beginning. Maybe it is some form of alien life that infiltrates the ranks of their enemy, only to kill them from the inside and morph their dead body's mass into something more suitable to their needs. Sounds like a video game to me. We won't know until more information comes to us.
The captain seems on edge. I gave him my weekly situation report yesterday and he was uneasy. I'm sure he was concerned about some high-ranking information that is classified higher than my security clearance allows. It's nothing that I can help with, so there's no sense in me worrying about it.

My only concern is those that are sick on board. If it were me and my paranoid ass, I'd kill them, burn them, and shoot their ashes out of the airlock. They are good men, though. They deserve better than that. If we end up having to fight to survive, though...I haven't picked up a rifle in years. I remember what they taught us at basic though. Squeeze, don't pull, and the like. I wouldn't hesitate if it meant seeing my wife again. Maybe I'll take some leave when we reach the next planet. Go home and spend time with her.
If it is aliens, though, I wouldn't mind being one of the first to see them. Even if they are a race of bloodthirsty conqueuring mauraders. I'm not sure exactly what to shoot at if it's not a human, but there is one thing that will kill any living creature though: woodchippers. Goodluck finding one out in the middle of space, though.

Macabre Mim
*Note: This story is on hiatus. I intend to pick it up again, but the mood of my life has shifted for the time being and I'm going to be working on a side project for a bit.* What would you give to live the life of your dreams? What kind of deal would you make? And when you were there, forced to stare your dreams in the eye and live them every day, how long would it be... before they broke you? Author's note: This is my first excursion outside the realm of villain fan fiction and I welcome feedback. The thing I've loved most about RRL so far is the potential for writing to be an interactive experience with excited readers. That said, also, the primary genre this is intended for is the blossoming realm of LitRPG. Namely, a slice of life tale in the manner of Grimgar or Re:Zero. So, likewise, I don't expect there will ever be a clear beginning-middle-and-end type of pattern to this story. It will likewise always be a bit more of a reactionary, exploratory novel into realms unknown - much like the 1800 travel-novel theme used by Jules Verne. Or, at least, that is my ambition.

A healthy mind in a healthy body
288 A.D, he was born. 297 A.D, he realised he had evil impulses. 298 A.D he heard of Anthony of Egypt, and sought to follow his example to learn how to suppress his impulses. 303 A.D, he saw his people be persecuted. 306 A.D, his world changed thrice, the persecutions ended forever, this fact and his hermit lifestyle brought him peace which came with strange abilities, and through them he joined the Hidden Side of the World, back then not yet hidden. 307 A.D, he sought for a way to cure myself, yet he stumbled across something more. A reckless ritual connected him to a well of knowledge, driving him insane and immortal, causing him to be treated as a commodity in the supernatural community, an Oracle. 2019 A.D, its been 1712 years, and the lusitanian has ended up in the other side of the world in less than wholesome hands, a place which may have answers about the mysteries of his abilities, when an unexpected event cuts the connection and his sanity and mortality return. Gaius Atiius Quadratus will not forget this kindness. The MC is based on the monk class of many rpgs, but the story isn't Litrpg. Also he will gain non monk abilities after a while. Fair warning I don't understand the rating system but I'll say M-rated just in case. This is my first story, I accept criticism but I would like the critic to explain the reasoning behind it. Also I'm still figuring how this site works and I have no schedule so updates may be sporadic, at least once a week. Not a native speaker but in the practices, too lazy to actually get the diploma, I got an average of 9.7 out of 10 at the Cambridge C1 level, the CAE, second highest european level for foreign languages, so it should be no problem. Mistbound: Eternity
The world is said to be formed out of duality of man. Good and evil, right and wrong, light and dark. And with duality, comes conflict. A meaningless clash of ideals results in pointless wars. Azlan is wanderer who doesn't falls in either category. Tired and done with the redundant world, he lives his secluded life, hunting monstrosites for coin in the crumbling province of Mountaliya, situated in the land of Forsa. The premise follows Azlan as he explores the province, experiencing the culture and its people as they try to stand unshaken amidst a cold and unforgiving world. The story is a dark fantasy that is a balance of action and world building but most importantly, it follows the people going about their daily lives. The world has entered a state of stasis, there are no high stakes, no glory to be had, only a decaying realm of ice remains. Everyone awaits for Heaven's descent, an event prophesied to bring the world out of stasis, by granting the champion of the event a wish. Heaven Shall Descend. I wanted to write a high fantasy story that doesn't focuses too much on Magic and Swordfights, but rather interactions between people, a bit of politics and ideals. This is my first attempt at writing something this huge, please let me know if you see mistakes or any problems in general, so I can learn from them. (The cover picture is from the year 1818, "Wanderer Above the Mist" by Caspar David Friedrich). I also write Short stories set in the same shared universe. You can read them here: Dark Fantasy Short Stories.
