《Catch Me If You Can (a PicYourStory entry)》Chapter 10: Futility

Ten: Futility
I looked up at the big, squarish building, and I could still see traces of the red, white and blue paint that was painted in the upper corner of the building.
I reached out and felt the roughened texture of the weathered concrete. I was amazed that this structure was still up.
Inside, I could just glimpse the metal structure inside. Possibly a spacecraft. At this point, I didn’t really care if it was still repairable.
Truth be told, I knew that I didn’t really have the skills, much more the resources to actually repair it. But when you are at the end of your hope, I guess you tend to delude yourself, and actually manufacture hope when there was really none to be had.
As I contemplated the very large spacecraft assembly building, I heard the whine of electric motors.
“Stop right there,” the voice of the lieutenant yelled. “Don’t move!”
That was ridiculous because I wasn’t moving.
“Get off that bike and raise your hands!”
“Why?” I asked.
“Because we got you. After months of chasing you, we finally got you!” I could hear the gloating in his voice.
“Why?”
“What do you mean why? Because you’re under arrest!”
Several of his people started running towards me. I wasn’t going after my rifle so they weren’t firing.
“I mean, why put me under arrest?”
The Lieutenant laughed. “Because you’re a criminal! And we need to bring you back home…” His voice lost a bit of its confidence. “… I mean, as soon as the rescue expedition finds us.”
I got off the bike and turned to face him. The lieutenant brought up his rifle again, and pointed it at my head.
“Don’t move!” he yelled.
“Do you really think there will be anyone coming for us?” I asked.

“Of course! I mean… I mean, there will eventually be… I mean…” He lost his determined demeanor. “I mean, it might take time… but, eventually, someone will come for us.”
He tightened his grip on his rifle. “And when they do, then we’ll bring you back home, and bring you to face justice.”
I might have reacted to that before, but not now.
“But, Lieutenant,” I said, “don’t you know where you are?”
He didn’t expect that. “What?” he said.
“Lieutenant – we’re already home. This is Cape Canaveral.”
Everyone stopped.
“We’re in the United States of America.”
I mutely pointed at the big building, and, now that I told them where we were, they finally recognized the almost-completely-faded painting of the flag on one side, and the blue NASA logo on the other side.
“Oh, my God,” the one beside me whispered. “What happened?”
“It’s not true…” another one said.
I felt beyond sad now. I tried to think of what to do now. But I didn’t know.
Instead, I decided to take off my pack. I took out the containers, sat on the concrete and started eating my dinner.
It was pork chops this time.
I really wished the food wasn’t cold.

Blue Hills
Nothing had ever felt quite right for Alexander Adamson. He'd worked his way up to a job he could tolerate, a few casual friends, and even a nice little apartment that he could call his own, though it really wasn't. The problem was that none of it was satisfying. It was as though he were going through the motions of a life, rather than having one of his own. Of course, it didn't exactly feel right when he woke up in a strange bed in the middle of nowhere. Nor when he was told that he was now the proud owner and operator of a local farm. A farm that had belonged to a late uncle he'd never known. But with the first train out of town a full 'season' away, he had plenty of time to get used to the idea. Plenty of time, perhaps, to even get to like the strange little town of Blue Hills. I have a discord now. Marvel at my ability to somehow still be antisocial on the other side of a screen! Back from hiatus along with my other fiction. Chapters are on a Thurs/Sun schedule until book 3 of that fiction is completed, at which point I'll be updating this daily. At which point uh.... I dunno what I'm going to do.

Limitless Adaptation
Jamie, 19, was walking into the kitchen for dinner when he suddenly found himself walking down a street in another world, a world with a game system. There, he meets a half-dragon, half-human named Adam, who faces adversity in most places, because of his parentage, and not long after they meet, the two of them are forced to leave town, due to Adam's beast nature. In the world of Tielmar, there are species of all varieties, a Class exists for nearly everything, and Skills come in quite a few forms. Jamie starts off with a Skill called "Limitless Adaptation", which supposedly allows him to adapt to any need, but is it really as powerful as it sounds? And more importantly - can it help him survive in a world where his first friend is a reject in all communities? Will Jamie, Adam, and the other friends and teammates they make in their journey find peace, allies, and love? Or will they fall to the powerful Adventurers that soon begin to hunt their team, to claim the bounties on several of its members, a bounty Jamie himself quickly finds on his own head? All of Book 1 is now posted, and Limitless Adaptation is officially done with the decision to rewrite. Credits for the cover go to me. That duck decided it wanted to nest in the flowerpot in front of my bank, so I took a picture of it.

The Adventures Of Heegan, Bleegan, Hoogan, and Bloogan: The Search For The Enchanted Toad Of Delarmir
This is a tale of four young goblin brothers, whose adventures and calamities are told as legends and jokes throughout the land. But they were first inspired by legends they heard, before ascending into one themselves; a reminder that simple beginnings can be the start of something great. Written for my D&D 5e party after they demanded I write an actual story about a children's book they found in one of our sessions, so I wrote it as it would appear in game as a childrens story. I took a very different approach on writing it, so do not be too disappointed when you find out it's not written at first grade reading level. Feedback is much appreciated, as I have never produced anything like this and I do hope I manage to entertain at least a few of you. New chapter releases to be within 3-5 days of one another (Work is now complete, do not expect new chapters).
