Chapter 12 - To Change Fate

As if by fate, as soon as they arrived at the gate, a guardsman ran toward them and shouted

“HELP! ROLAND, THIS MONSTER IS TOO STRONG FOR US TO HANDLE!”

Roland dashed to the gate and saw it. It was that vile creature. The same malicious aura. The same disgusting face. Same gruesome grin.

History had come to repeat itself.

“Hey there big boy, you wanna go round 2?”

It's voice was less scratchy and more human like. That could only mean one thing. He killed more people.

Veins popped out of Roland's forehead. His eyes turned red. Much difference from the gentle and warm ocean blue eyes he had.

Roland's flame red hair turned white and started moving wildly as his anger rose.

Roland’s face distorted until it was no longer what it once was. As if a demon had taken control of him and was about to fight in his place.

When Maha blinked his scanning eyes, he saw a translucent dragon serpent coiling around Roland. As if the snake planned to cover Roland until Roland could no longer be seen.

Maha felt around his body with his mind. Maha pulled out the white qi and turned it into a dart and struck the snake’s eyes.

The snake receded away and into Roland's body.

At this rate Roland would be consumed by rage before he would be able to move to attack the monster.

Maha reached out to Roland. “Roland! You need to snap out of it! Was this what your sis gave her life for? So you could die by being consumed by the sin of wrath? Wake up!”

Roland had a hard time awakening, after a long struggle internally, Roland woke up from his state. During the time, many of Roland's comrades had sacrificed themselves to protect the border and Roland. Despite being low ranked, they had iron bonds that couldn't be cut through by concepts of life and death.

Roland's eyes reddened and teared up. Wiping away his tears, he pointed his spear at the monster and roared “Vile creature, I, Roland Kinst challenge thou to single man combat! Doth Thou accept.”

Maha thought all was safe, but then, Maha realized, there was a crack in the lance, and that monster noticed too. Roland who was reliving memories of hate, didn't notice the crack as he was too enraged.

Maha quickly prepared to set up a contract with Roland before they could battle, but the monster, as if knowing what Maha wanted, dashed in with a charge.

The vile creature slashed upward at the crack in the spear. The spear broke. By then all seemed lost, but as if expecting it, Roland used the spear as a staff and continued to beat the monster back.

The vile creature lost its momentum in battle and started falling back. Roland picked up a spear from his fallen comrade, and quickly finished the monster off.

As if melting, the monster had melted away it's rough and ugly skin, and underneath was a pale skinned beauty.

His comrades didn't know why he was so sad, but Roland knew. It was his sister.

“Why? How did this happen?”

“Heh…. heh… back then, you were so busy torturing the monster, that you forgot to deal the finishing blow.

In revenge, it wanted to take my ashes and transform into me to kill you in my form.

After being stuck together for 6 years we came to understand one another.

It was like he was another human being.

As time went on I forgave him, but because of pride, he couldn't forgive you…

Monsters aren't vile. They too have human emotions, intelligence, desires…

Please don't hate monsters so...

Dear brother… this will be the true last time we meet, could you dry your eyes and give me one last smile…?”

Roland wanted to deny reality. To tell her she won't die. He wouldn't let her this time. But the words were caught at his throat.

Roland dried his eyes and gave his sister a gentle smile.

Without regard for the people around, he brought his head down to give her a kiss, but his sister was unable to reciprocate.

She had passed on.

Roland's tears fell silently as he just sat there with his sister’s corpse. He talked about everything that had happened in the past six years. He sighed, and cremated his sister the second time.

Both times, he had killed his sister. Both times, he had to cremate her. Both times, he spread her ashes.

First time imprisoned him mind and soul, but this time it felt like a true release.

Maha watched from afar. Feeling it was rude to intrude upon this moment, he sat on a tree far away, observing Roland.

Roland remembers him, but if he allowed Roland to use Hero’s strength, he would gain plot armor for the day, and everything would happen perfectly. His sister would be alive. Was it okay for Maha to stay silent about this because of his greed?

Filled with guilt, Maha couldn't face Roland, the sweet and kind Roland anymore. Maha turned away from Liberality and left after whispering “It wasn't long, but I enjoyed every moment of it.”

Although this experience made Maha grow, he still couldn't handle the guilt.

Roland wasn’t the scapegoat. It was his sister. His sister became the monster. Maha failed to change fate.
