《Round Two》Chapter 22 - The Industry

Leo called them, he did the orientation, he bought the dumb appraisal ability, and he now knew how to use a gun. He did what was asked of him begrudgingly, but now, with no one to nag him, he was going to do what he wanted. And he only wanted to do one thing, he only wanted to be nagged by one person, and if anyone had anything to say, well… They can go fuck themselves. Leo decides firmly.
Under delusions of peace and love, Leo went back to Nouveau-Ville, and obediently went back to his 9-5 job, and to his weird and freaky girlfriend. But Leo didn’t care what the world thought; he was happy and to disturb that would be blasphemy.
...
…
“Yep, if you just right-click and open the task manager… Yup, and just end the task… How does it look? Working? Awesome. Have a good day.” Leo says, satisfied, before stretching his limbs. Think it’s time for a coffee break. He thinks with a smile.
Leo gets up and picks up his cup before walking off to the break room.
There didn’t seem to be anywhere in there, so unhindered, Leo poured himself a cup of coffee before taking a sip. Leo exhales a breath of relief. Another day in paradise. He thinks with a smile.
Suddenly, someone walks into the room. It was a handsome middle-aged man, the chief financial officer. He gives Leo a courtesy nod and smile before pouring himself a cup of coffee.
Leo smiles back and continues to focus on drinking his coffee. Damn, what does it take to become a CFO? I can only assume it's nepotism. Leo thinks, amused. That’s just the way things are in this world; if you’re more successful than me, it’s automatically unjust! He thinks. He felt quite funny at the moment, and on a whim, Leo decides it would be a good time to test his appraisal ability.

Some information pops up in front of Leo’s eyes. Hmm… A lot of background stuff. Married, kids, yada yada. Oh? He worked his way to CFO from the bottom? Good stuff, bro. Wait, what's this? Frequently has sexual fantasies involving Lizzy Sanders, the secretary? Holy fucking shit man! Should I even be allowed to see information like this!? Leo exclaims with wide eyes.
The man takes a sip of coffee and looks to Leo. “Is something wrong?” He asks, unsure why Leo looked so uncomfortable.
“Ah, huh, no, nothing. Nothing’s wrong.” Leo says before looking away.
Suddenly, someone else walks into the break room.
Leo couldn’t help but let out an exasperated sigh. It was Lizzy.
Lizzy smiles as she walks in. “Hello. Hello.” She says, greeting the other two men in the room.
Leo lets out a bitter smile. “Hi.” He says. Now that she’s here… I kinda have to know… He thinks with a sideways glance. After a hint of hesitation, Leo let go and used the appraisal ability again.
Hmm… Single… Finishing college this year… Lives at home with the family… Responsible, good-natured, outspoken… What a nice girl… Wait, what’s this? Has a submission kink? Attracted to power? Thinks the CFO is cute? Holy fucking shit. I really should not be reading this information. Leo thinks, once again wide-eyed.
Lizzy takes a sip of her coffee and raises an eyebrow. “Is something wrong? You’re sweating.” She says, somewhat concerned.
“Hah hah, no I’m fine. Everything’s fine. I’m just going to get back to work.” Leo says awkwardly before making an abrupt exit.
“That guy’s a little weird.” The middle-aged man comments casually.
“I think it’s the industry.” Lizzy comments before taking another sip of coffee.

Saga of the Jewels VOLUME ONE COMPLETE
Prefer to listen to rather than read Saga of the Jewels? I'm also releasing it as a free audibook serial podcast on iTunes here! Epic YA JRPG-influenced GameLit progression ensemble-cast steampunk romance fantasy! When Ryn’s hometown is destroyed, will he be able to gather together the twelve Primeval Jewels in order to defeat the evil Emperor and save the world of Mid? A fan novelization of an amazing Final Fantasy game that doesn’t actually exist, that currently releases at least one chapter a month. Epic in that this will be very long. “It’s a marathon, not a sprint!” (-Kandaj) YA in that this should be enjoyable to~13-year-olds and upwards. Some gore, some swearing, some sex, but nothing more than PG-13. JRPG-influenced / GameLit in that it uses lots of JRPG tropes, particularly from Final Fantasy. I’ve read a lot of fan Final Fantasy novelisations and you can basically think of this as a fan novelisation of its own Final Fantasy game that doesn’t actually exist as a game... Progression in that the characters level up over time (though not with visible litrpg stat boxes). They grow in ability through training and experience, gain new skills, individually and as a party (think Chrono Trigger) and spend time discussing and stratgeising about how to defeat their opponents. Main protagonist from book three would definitely be able to defeat himself from book one! Ensemble-cast because we've got quite the roster of misfits here. The first volume is all from the main protagonist's POV, but it starts dancing between his and different POVs thereafter. Steampunk in that we’ve also got airships, steam trains, pistols and ambiguous ‘amber bars’ that function a bit like artificial lights… Romance in that there is lots of shipping here, a few love triangles, and you may be kept guessing as to who will actually end up together... Fantasy in that we’re in a vaguely pre-modern setting. We’ve got swords, magic, dragons, dungeons, monsters, all that good stuff. * "This story captures that Final Fantasy quality perfectly. Kiddy but also grim. The characters are great... Severely underrated and needs more favorites/follows. I look forward to seeing how this story will unfold." -Gilgamesh9999 "Starting at the end and jumping backwards is not a writing style seen every day. I'll admit, I was a bit skeptical at first, but you've executed a fairly crazy idea very skillfully so far. Overall, a strong start to what could be a very strong story." -RandomFF.netUser "You definitely have my interest piqued. It'll be interesting to see where the story goes... It definitely has an 'old school Final Fantasy' type feel to it, which I appreciate...Good job! I am glad you are going into more details about the story you laid out in the prologue...of course the big burning question is 'You know they lose in the the first chapter, so how will they end up winning?' That of course, is the story you're writing...so we'll see how it goes! #Following." -KyleQuicksilver (quotes are from reviews on other sites) * If you enjoy it, don’t forget to boost Saga of the Jewels on topwebfiction.com!
