《The Beast Gamer》2. Tutorial

Paul and I are talking about Fate in our dorm when our conversation came to the races that were going to be in game. "I was thinking about being a Minotaur warrior," Paul started, "but I really want to use some sort of magic. Even if its just some cool sword skills. But the Minotaurs don't have nearly as much mana as the other races."

I nod in agreement and say, "If you want to be some sort of spell sword then I would suggest being a Sun or night-elf." Paul's brown eyes fill with confusion and he sits up straighter on his bed as he asks, "Wait, you can be an elf? I thought that was a NPC only race."

Realizing my mistake of leaking confidential game information, the demo only showed the world and a few of the classes and races during the launch to let the players discover them, I try to cover it up. "Well... uh... I just thought that... since Fate was made by the same people that made Magic Online, it should have some similarities and I figured that elves will most likely be playable." I said, slowly shifting my weight around a bit.

This was a fact and the creators of Magic Online really were hired by BlindEye Studios to create Fate but, of course, the reason I knew was because I had suggested it to dad for and idea meeting in the early stages of game development. I also knew that if Paul was good at discerning a lie he would know because I came up with it on the spot and it didn't take much logic to break that cover up.

Paul only scratches his head and thinks for a moment before inquiring, "What else do you think will be implemented from Magic Online to Fate?"

I think for a moment before responding, "Well, maybe they will have hidden classes like in Magic Online."

"What are hidden classes?" Paul asks with puzzlement in his voice.

I respond with a sigh. Time for some explanations. "Well, a hidden class is like it sounds a class you have to do certain tasks or accomplishments to achieve. It, usually, but not always, is similar to a different basic class or a combination of two or more classes like for instance an elemental knight. This class is similar to elemental mages and knights and will have bonuses that are similar or better than of the other two classes.“

“The way to receive it would likely be to have high affinities for elements and be a knight or something along those lines. It could also be a quest or a chain of them. Oh, and they are highly difficult to do," I finish with an exhale. My eyes wander towards Paul to judge his reaction. to my relief he seems to have understood the concept of it.

He expresses his interest in such a thing but soon the conversation shifts to talking about other parts of the game we would like to see from Magic Online. Paul had played it but not a lot so our discussion was quite a lively one and I had way more fun than I expected. Before we noticed the evening had come and we had to sleep or risk oversleeping on the first day and missing the opening ceremony. Not something either of us wished for so we said our goodnights and turned the light off.

Sleep found me in seconds.

One night and needlessly long ceremony later...

Paul and I walk together talking about what other games we had played in the past. "- I played that old game called Sky... Hmmm, I can't remember the other half of the name, but it was the one with the dragons," Paul states and I recall more information about it. "I think the game was called Skybrim and it was part of a series that ended when the franchise was made into a MMORPG."

Paul is about to agree when we about get jumped by some, for a lack of better words, video game nerds.

"Hey you two wanna-” He inhales deeply, ”Join the video game club!" the one that looks like the leader shouts then proceeds to gasp as if he just ran a marathon and no exaggeration everyone looks at us and snickers. My usual half smile fades as I see the scene he is making. "I don't really have any particular interests in joining any clubs at the moment, sorry," I say in a fake apologetic voice.

Paul looks at me like I had three heads and asks, "But, Brady, you seem like you would really like the club since you enjoy video games so much. I for one would like to know the information about the club."

I shake my head and respond, "I feel that aside from classes themselves and studying, I would be dedicating most of my time if not all to playing Fate."

The club members and quite a few onlookers all look at me shocked. Sense-Blast, the console, is very expensive so while Fate doesn’t cost too much it is still almost impossible to play the game. That of course wasn't to say that Fate was cheap as it was 80$ which cost more than most games but it was deemed worth it by most people.

Then one of the club members with curly hair and a lot of acne says, "Well, we have been trying to gain sponsors so that we could play all the Sense-Blast games together and make a guild. So are you sure you wouldn't want to join?"

I think about it for a few moments before answering, "I will think about it when you guys get Sense-Blasts and games for them."

The leader then quickly replies, "Great, so since you boys are thinking about joining I will give you two pamphlets! Also, if you come to the club room, ask for James!" And then they bolt off and start asking others to join their club.

At the information centre me and Paul pick up our schedules. I discover we have two classes together. I guess he is a person I really need to not piss off or my life will kinda be shitty. I note this and continue socializing when I realize that Paul is a very popular person as people keep saying hello to him.

I guess he looks pretty good, though judging from all the whispers I hear coming from the girls you would think he is some super handsome person. Paul himself, however, is either used to it or doesn't hear anything so I don't mention it.

Two Days Later, Day of Launch

I open up the Sense-Blast capsule and look at Paul across the room and he is already getting inside. I look back to my console and glance at the clock. The game unlocks in 30 minutes. I slide into the capsule and it shuts over me. My eyes close and when I open them I am in my Sense-Blast hub. It is already reorganized to how I want it so I walk over to the "door" to Fate. There is a timer there that says twenty eight minutes left before the game unlocks. Nothing to do but wait so I look at the setup of my hub, a larger version of my room at Mom's house just each door leading to a game hub, and sit down to wait.

Time remaining 10 Minutes until Fate unlocks

I walk to the Fate Door and open up my settings so that I won't have to use any extra time in game optimizing it. In the menu I see a dozen different tabs but the only one I’m interested in is the gameplay one. There I notice a pain setting with a slider and its default at 35%.

Words underneath the slider catch my attention: 100% Experience. I mess with the slider and see the max it goes up to is 80% pain with 120% Experience and that the lowest is 0% pain and 80% experience. I figure that best option, yet also the most painful, would be the 80%, 120%. I figure that this is definitely the best option as I can deal with pain and I want the extra [XP]. While I continue playing around with other settings a message pops up.

Time remaining 1 Minute until Fate unlocks

I close the window by thinking close and and mentally prepare myself for the game. In a moment I hear the clink of a message notification, but I just enter without looking at it.

When I open my eyes, I find myself facing a woman as she grandly announces, "Welcome to Fate. I am here to remind you to change your pain settings accordingly." She waits a second until, probably, getting the information that I already messed with my settings and continues, "Now you will have to complete the offline tutorial."

I am surprised. I didn't know there was a tutorial, but I guess dad just didn't tell me about it like a lot of other things. Then another thought occurred to me I didn't pick my name or race. Highly alarmed I enter the tutorial.

The first thing I see in the tutorial is a red sky. I sit up and find myself in an other-worldly place. Wait, when did I lay down? I then think status.

Hmmm... These are pretty basic stats... Wait, HELL?

Taken aback by what I read, I decide that I need to investigate more before making any assumptions.

For quickly calming and thinking rationally you are awarded

+10 Wisdom

Well at least there is that. I look around and find myself on a heightened platform above horrible torture going on below. I blink several times unable to believe how graphic this game is. No wonder there is an 18+ limit on it. I look around and see, or more importantly smell burning people. They’re screaming their throats out and I can hear the similar sounds coming from all directions . It is clear the developers weren’t playing with words when they called this place hell.

A strong voice reaches my ears through the cacophony of death cries from those unable to die. "Welcome traveler from another world. We apologize for the inconvenience of having to see Hell but it is the only way we could bring you to this world.”

I turn my head in that direction to see a humanoid in a white robe with shining snow white wings hovering behind me. He’s looking over the torture grounds with eyes like ice cubes. I feel a shiver run down my body and I’m not even the one they’re aimed at.His mouth never moved the entire time. “That is to say that the only available bodies left were ones from Hell. Here is a list of all the races you can be." A multitude of questions bouncing through my head were interrupted by an announcement of a message.

Human

Elf*

Minotaur

Half-Giant

Demi-human* **

Elemental**

*A variety of choices within the race **The intelligent races will often try to enslave you!

I didn't even have to ask or think about it. "Huma-" I try to say in a clear voice but it catches and I immediately cough up blood. It’s very realistic and since I had set the pain to 80% also kind of painful. I had coughed up blood before after I getting kicked by a high schooler when I was still in elementary but it hadn't been as painful.

The voice I assume is an angel’s apologizes, "Oh! I'm so sorry. This one was a screamer so let me fix your throat."

I feel a soothing feeling on my neck and all over my body.

"Anyway. so you want to be a human?” the voice asks again but without waiting for clarification continues. “Okay, so here is a mirror and just say how you want to change the look out loud."

Looking at the mirror I see loads of scars fly off like ashes from this body and it’s shape changes into that of my own. . But I want to have a slightly different looking character. "I would like to be slightly taller... Yep like that... also, uh... I want red eyes... Nah, green eyes and a darker color of brown for hair... more... more... there we go... Wait, actually, can I change my voice?" "Yes," "Ok, I would like the largest vocal range I can get and also make the chords more durable..."

After the angel’s nod I test my new voice and learn that I sound the same but can go higher and lower pitched. I then try to scream and gain a skill

Scream [Beginner]{0.0%}

As a last resort you scream at a high pitched frequency and volume

Chance to stun enemies and large chance to attract predatory beasts

Screaming while in a perilous environment makes you understand animals better when they are being attacked

+5% Affinity with Beasts

Surprised I look at the window just to let that sink in. I then decide to continue testing my new vocal cords which again result in another ability.

Battlecry[Beginner]{0.0%}

As close to a roar as a human can get

+10% Morality if you are not part of the group (but are supporting them)

+50% Morality if you are apart of the group

+150% Morality if you are leading the group

[Opposite bonuses for the enemy morality]

Understanding how roaring helps beasts in fights you grow closer to them

+5 affinity with Beasts

Smiling I think about how best to use them while charging into battle and when things get crazy. I start to think about possible situations where I would need to use those abilities when I hear an impatient angel say, "You can stay as long as you want, all I have to say is that you should try not to fall off the edge and when you are ready to leave just say you're read-" "I'm ready," I interrupt.

After a flash of light I appear in a dimly lit room with an ajar wooden door that leads to what looks like a hall. r and another one made of iron that I assume leads to a closet or bathroom.

I decide to look around the room and first check under the bed and find a book. It is called Feratus. I open it and see extraordinary artwork and fancy calligraphy. I check who the author is but there doesn't seem like there is one.

Once upon a time a mage skillful in the art of fusion and polymorphy had a pet dog he loved very much. His dog was his only companion as he was exiled for his potentially dangerous magic and he left without a word. The Mage enhanced the dog so that it could speak with him and help so he wouldn't go mad and to do so he used great and powerful magic. The world could sense his magic and the same king that exiled him sent spies to check up. When they arrived the dog was talking like an intelligent being while the Mage cried tears of joy. Later he asked the dog about what he felt about certain methods and since the dog answered with useful information..

When the spies, of the king who exiled him left, the two talked about fusion of biological beings and tested on one another parts of the theories causing them to grow in strength and intelligence.

The king hearing of an intelligent dog thought nothing of it but his daughter instantly decided she wanted it. She was his babygirl so the king amassed his armies and went to get it. The dog and the mage were now at the levels of magic the same as the demigods of legend.

They wished no one harm, just wanted knowledge.

When the king's army came, they were slaughtered as they attacked the mage. His dog though not with strength in magic but rather one in might. She ripped through the army with enchanted claws while the Mage with his summoned army of ethereal elementals.

Yet the army of knights eventually did win. There had been just too many of them. The Mage was thrown into prison at the brink of death while his dog brought to the princess.

But the dog, she was able to escape to the prison where her master was dying. She used her fusion magic and they became one. They slaughtered that ancient city.In time it became overgrown and known as Feral city.

As for the two beings that fused together, it is told that they then became the Dark God Faratus. She stands for the dark side of nature and that of survival of the fittest. While not among the original gods she became very powerful as she had a mortal body which allowed her to interfere with mortals.

Wow that was kind of short but also informational about gods and other such beings. A message then appeared on my screen.

You discovered Faratus the Dark God of nature

Would you like to join Her religion?

Yes No

I stop and think about what advantages I could gain and what could be lost. I could possibly receive some of the mentioned abilities or I could get jack squat. Since its a dark god then I probably would be the first to join it. Contemplating I decide to choose the yes button as I could always act as if I were of another god so that I could get stronger. Also Faratus should appreciate that as strength and survival of the fittest.

Congratulations! You are the first to join a Dark God's religion

I see a large gain from this religion, although the other religions may have some better stat boosts but its hard to tell.

So then I continue searching the room. Under and behind chairs I find some copper coins. Not far stands a dresser. Inside one of the drawers I find a key and put it in a pouch I found earlier. A look in the closet proves that its open. Near one of the walls a chest stands with a simple note on top.

It says: The chest holds a weapon and it will be a weak type of weapon that you think of. Your religion may affect the contents of this chest.

I try to open the chest but it has no way of opening so I concentrate hard on a quick and reliable weapon. Then the top disappears and inside I find a spell tome with a paper inside. I open to the page and the paper says, "Use the tome!" As suggested I think the words use tome and gain an ability while the book burns away in my hands.

Grinning a sadistic smile I realize that this is the best possible early game and possibly later game ability Since I got it so early I bet I can level it up into an even better one. I look around some more and seeing nothing decide I have gotten all possible loot. Then I exit the room.

Walking down the dark hallway I practice using Faratus' claws. They add a new joint to my finger at about halfway to where the top of my fingertip is and it is a dark brown color. I then think Faratus' claws ability status window.

Transformation ability: Faratus' claws [Beginner]{5.6%}

Although, they aren't her actual claws they are still powerful

Thinking about how to use it most effectively I decide to just let them stay out as they only require [MP] for casting and dispelling the ability. I then think to himself, well I most likely will get more XP for the ability if I use it in combat.

Being able to see the end of the hallway I start to run. I find I am quicker than in real life as expected but I notice I get tired very fast. Thinking of a possible stat gain, I decide to keep running even if it starts to hurts. I see several messages talking about endurance but just wave them away. When exhaustion threatens to overwhelm me I decide to rest at the end of the long hallway. Sitting there I see a door and after I finish resting I continue through the door.

First thing that catches my eyes there is a guard looking person fighting a silver wolf. That is all I can see when I get a update on the tutorial quest.

I quickly think: Who is the threat the guard or the wolf? Well, the easy answer is the wolf but the guard may be a disguise. And since it didn't specify how to eliminate the threat, I guess I will just befriend the wolf and, hopefully, cause peace or reward me in some way.

I run up to the fight and yell, "Get back!" The only one who moved was the guard. The wolf now had its attention on me and I showed it the palms...of my claw hands... oops... it growls and starts circling me so I put the claws away and slowly approach the silver wolf. It stops growling and I put my cupped hands near its muzzle and it licks my hand.

I quickly reactivate Feratus' claws and spin around in time to see the "guard" charge at me. Luminous and I claw at his face and dodge his flurry of attacks. He screams in my face and I know I hit him and I quickly retreat backwards. His blood is dripping down his face and his eyes were damaged so I start to sneak around him. Not being able to see makes him go berserk at where I and Luminous were and we both approach his back unnoticed. When he stops and screams out in rage, I move out of instinct and I use Battle Cry as me and Luminous pounce, knocking him flat. We then claw at his chest repeatedly until it eventually turns into a pile of bloody mush with several bones.

I then notice that there see-through windows had appeared at the side of my vision, talking about how to fight and stuff. I close them all, not thinking I would need them.

I start to wonder how powerful I was getting. Is this normal? But before I got to equip Dark Doesn't Mean Evil and check my stats I hear a voice, "This is usually where I would show you the religions of light you could choose, but it appears you have already chosen your path." I quickly look to see whom it is and notice Luminous. I open my mouth in disbelief, but the silver wolf vanishes and I hear the angel once more, "Congratulations on completing the tutorial. When you want to leave just say the word, leave." Thinking back to the key I obtained I decide to stay and look around.

I had been so immersed in combat that I had not looked at my surroundings. This was a courtyard of sorts and there were two doors, the one I came from, the hallway, and another that I knew nothing of. I go to that door and try to open it, but it’s locked. Key comes to my mind and bingo, it works.

I grin and look within the room. It’s filled with six chests that resist my attempt to open them like the one in the closet. Should I try thinking of a skill again then? An ability to move faster and more efficiently, I say in my mind and the chest opens. From inside magic flies into my face and forces itself down my throat. The pain is uncomparable to anything I have endured before as I feel my whole body start to change.

My leg muscles and what I assume are my bones shift and crack. Arms do the same while I wring in agony. I have no idea how long it takes but even when it stops pain recedes slowly. At some point I decide I’m strong enough to open my eyes again and see a window open.

Ask and you shall receive!

You have gained an ability from your goddess Faratus

Quadrupedalism[Passive]{0.0%}

While you can still walk on two legs your agility doubles while on all fours.

Bonus: For having Faratus' claws you now also have the claws on your feet and you gain a permanent 20 agility.

I sigh feeling light headed from the transformation and feel slightly afraid of the next five chests. Maybe magic would be easier? I should try focusing on it next.

I then walk on all fours to the next chests. First one present me with Fusion ability which at beginner may only combine weak magic items and spirits. Next are fingerless gloves that increase magic power by about 5%, Flame Breath which at beginner doesn't even fully leave my throat. It kinda sucks, if you ask me, but I find it can heat things up in my mouth pretty nicely. Last two are Tendrils, an ability with one yard long range that starts at my torso, and Parasite. It essentially changes the blood of people and animals I drink into health and mana. Also it synergizes with Tendrils so I can use Parasite through them.

Satisfied I leave the treasure room. I see the body of Maurinthac is still there and decide to look in his bags, take his sword. He had quite a few gold coins and some nice dri fit like clothing so I take them but leave the mangled armor. I identify all of the items and they are pretty standard. What interests me is that the sword does about the same damage as my claws so I check the ability to make sure.

Faratus' claws[Beginner 4]{53.6%}

Although they aren't her actual claws they are still powerful

[MP] cost: 20

80-120 damage

Can rip through armor after repeated hits

My eyes widen. This now does way more than this noob sword! I will just have to take my chances with close combat. I then quickly open my stat window
