"Little bro!" Sun cried out as she rushed to embrace Moon. "Where did you go? You missed our big party!"

Moon smiled coolly at his sister. "I figured I'd surprise you with something."

"Ooh! Don't keep me waiting, what is it?"

Moon pulled out a beautiful white flower with a small black spot in its center. It was small and looked so fragile. Sun took it in her hand and thanked her brother.

"Put it in your hair. It'll look great on you sis." Moon seemed nervous and was fidgeting with the sword on his hip.

But poor Sun, she didn't notice. She was too focused on the gift. Her thoughts went back as she realized this was the first gift he had ever given her. Of course, they were always too busy for things like that, but maybe this was a sign of things to come. Maybe now that they ruled the heavens together, they would have more time to make these sorts of gestures.

"Oh no! I didn't think to get you anything!" she exclaimed as she felt a pang of shame for having not been as thoughtful as her brother.

"Don't worry about it. You'll give me something, I'm sure." cooed Moon as a shadow fell over his face.

"Little bro? Why do you..." a great inky blackness rose up behind Moon and cut Sun off. "Look out! Void is back!" With a quick shove, she threw her brother far away from the encroaching giant as it spilled out of the Earth.

"I am not gotten rid of so easily," snarled Void

"Hurry little bro." Sun whispered in Moon's mind. "We can take care of him again. We just have to work together."

"You think I will fall for the same trickery twice?" laughed Void. "No, your combined efforts will not be enough to save you this time Sun."

Sun was stunned, Void was acting like it could hear her. Then, a sharp pain spread throughout her body. She fell to a knee as her brightness started to dim. Meanwhile, the flower in her hair started to grow. Its white flowers turned a dull yellow as the black center grew bigger and bigger.

Void laughed even louder as she felt her power drain away. Moon rushed to her side, and she felt a surge of relief. Whatever was happening, her brother would help her. But something was wrong. Moon wasn't as bright. Half of him seemed to be consumed in shadow. She began to panic. Whatever Void had done to her, it must have also done to Moon.

"Little bro! It'll be alright," she reassured him. "No matter what curse he has stricken us with, we can beat him together."

"Don't worry Sun," sneered Moon. "Everything will work out."

Sun's eyes went wide as Moon's blade pierced through her chest. She stared into his eyes and only saw coldness. No drive, no fury, just indifference. He pulled his sword back, and Sun fell to the ground.

"Cursed Sun," he spat out with venom. "May you now see which of us is truly superior, and may your arrogance bind you to this fragile flower forever more."

There was another jolt of pain through Sun as the flower in her hair grew brighter and brighter. Until it grew too big to stay in her hair and fell to the ground.

As Moon finished the ceremony Void smiled. Then rushed towards Sun. Moon looked surprised, as Void opened its maw and devoured his sister. With one gulp she was gone, and as she fell deeper into Void the many holes in its skin began to twinkle and glow.

The giant monster let out another haughty laugh as it declared, "I am no longer Void. Now I am Night! For I have caused the absence of your hope and the goodness of Sun! Look upon me and despair!"

"This wasn't!" Moon looked on with shock and fear as he saw his sister fade away. "We were just supposed to defeat her! You weren't supposed to devour her!"

Night leaned down to Moon and smiled. "How else could we hope to truly beat her? No, the only way was for us to take her power for our own."

Moon's face scrunched up in rage as he realized he had been tricked. He gripped his sword with a shaky hand and roared as he jumped at Night, who was formerly the great beast Void. "I'll kill you!"

But no matter what he did he could not strike at Night. As his face stood half covered in shadow Night let out a resounding laugh. "We are bound together now starling. Half of my soul lives in you. My darkness has infected you to your core, and you can't raise a hand against me any longer."

"You tricked me!"

"No, I gave you what you truly wanted dear Moon. Now no one can compare to your brightness. You'll forever be known as the one who killed the sun."

Slowly Night rose back into the heavens to claim its place once again. "Under your light the world shall flourish. We have no need of Sun now that we claim her powers. Rise with me now and let us rule over the pathetic remnants of this world."

Moon slumped his shoulders down. He had made a mistake, and now there was no going back. Sun was gone, and he could not help her anymore. At least, not directly. So, he rose up with Night and the world was indeed illuminated, just not as much as when Sun was there. Though when the dark soul of Night overcame Moon, true darkness seemed to reign once again.

All was not lost though. Moon watched and searched while he ruled in the heavens. One day, a lone wanderer caught his eye. A mighty human who had slain entire towns of monsters with nothing but his own two fists. No magic, or ancient runes. Simply using his wits and physical skill to come out on top. Finally, Moon had hope. Keeping his plans hidden from Night as best he could, he channeled his own spirit into his sword. He placed it next to the warrior while he slept. Without being able to do anything himself, the best Moon could do was place his hopes in this lone man.
