《The Land of the Unknown》Episode 2 (Part 1)

Tommy and Antonio followed the map until they reached a particular spot called The Arching Caves. When they got inside, they found the attendance room empty. Was the place closed for the day? If so, why didn’t they lock it up? Antonio pointed at the entrance door and noticed that it was still open. The boys looked at one another with worry before heading through.
They walked down some human-made paths while looking around at some forms the cavern took. The blue stalactites hung from the ceiling like crystal chandeliers. The yellow stalagmites formed variations of small and big cities, towns, or even people, but neither of them knew what each of them represented.
Tommy and Antonio hugged the brown walls, watched their footing, and traversed lower and lower when they noticed the surrounding areas got darker. As they continued to press on, the Stalactites and Stalagmites got dimmer glows, making it harder to see their footing.
They eventually noticed an off rail path with some lights on the side of the trail and went there. They passed under the tape; the water reflected their visions up to the top of the ceiling and floors.
Eventually, the two stopped at a big metallic door with a speaker system built inside.
“Um, is this the place?” Tommy leaned over and whispered.
“I think so,” Antonio replied. He looked up and saw the ‘DANGER: KEEP OUT’ sign plastered on top of the door. As if anyone would note that and listen, right?
“Maybe this isn’t a good idea after all,” Tommy said, his body fidgeting all over.
“Relax, my uncle’s friendly; there’s nothing to worry about.”
“That wasn’t what I—”
Antonio pressed the intercom and spoke through it. “Hello?”
A robotic monitor soon peeked out and stared at them. “Password?” It spoke to them.

“What? But it’s me...”
“Oh, sorry, Antonio, let me open the doors for you.” The monitor went back inside the door as it slowly opened itself up for the two boys to come in.
“Why is there a place like this inside a cave?” Tommy whispered.
“Beats me.”
.-.-.-.
Antonio and Tommy entered the lab where they’re greeted by an older, tall man who also had short black hair and glasses on.
“Hello, boys.” The man chirped as he walked over and extended his arm for a shake.
“Hey, Sam, long time no see,” Antonio replied, grabbing and shaking his hand.
“I would say the same thing.”
Tommy inspected the two, his eyes widening. “Whoa, you guys look identical!”
“Yeah, we get that a lot...” Sam said, adjusting his white lab coat.
Sam let the two boys in and introduced them to his science partner, Mandy. After some pleasantries, Sam got straight to the point of why he asked for his nephew to come over.
“Hey, would you like to have a look at our latest project?” Sam offered.
“Sure thing!” Antonio replied.
“Are you sure that’s a good idea?” Mandy leaned in and whispered in his ear.
“Why not?” Sam whispered back. “No harm done, as long as—”
“What are you working on?” Tommy interrupted, leaning towards them to get a better listen on the duo.
“We’re trying to create a portal,” Mandy explained, straightening herself. “One that can take you to another dimension!”
“No way, is that even possible?” The boys asked, barely containing their excitement.
“That’s only the fun of it, though,” Sam told them. He turned and looked at the computer screen in front of them, reminiscing. “He always wanted to see if there were other worlds to explore...”

“Uh, what was that you said?” Antonio titled his head in confusion.
“Oh, sorry, it’s nothing you should worry about...” Sam waved it off and headed for the keyboard processor. “We just need to adjust a few more things before testing it out at last.”
Mandy looked over some notes on the table and scratched her head with the eraser of the pencil. “Shouldn’t we find some test subjects for this?”
“That is something we need to consider for this...”
Tommy's and Antonio's faces lit up as they both rushed over to the scientists, practically jumping up and down. “Can we see it when it’s finished? Please!?”
“Oh, uh, sure thing,” Mandy responded hesitantly.
“When will you guys finish?” Tommy asked, out of curiosity. He placed his hands on the table and examined the papers, but she shuffled and stacked them so he couldn't see.
“We’re not sure about that, unfortunately.” Sam crossed his arms and got lost in thought.
“You guys will just have to be patient on this, sorry,” Mandy added. She took picked up the papers and walked over to Sam.
“Aw, man.” Tommy groaned as he went to slump on the bench across the room with Antonio following soon after.
The two looked from a distance and watched Sam and Mandy continue their work.
“I wonder what kind of dimension they’ll uncover...” Antonio pondered, scratching his chin. “The longer I wait, the more anticipated I feel to see it!”
Tommy, however, crossed his arms and groaned. “Can’t we help make it go faster?”
“Tom, we shouldn’t interfere with them and their hard work. Besides, isn’t it more interesting to watch them work and do this amazing stuff?”
“Not really, no.”
“You know, you weren’t interested in science beforehand, so what piqued your interest in—?”
“Will you shut it, Antonio?!” Tommy retorted while he [Antonio] tried to contain his laughter. Both stopped when they overheard the scientists.
“I’m getting exhausted.” Sam groaned. He wiped the sweat off his forehead.
“Why don’t we take a break?” Mandy suggested.
“Good idea.”
Oh, come on! Tommy threw his hands in the air, having just about given up.

Embrace the Blade
Born crippled, it was no surprise when James Ransom died young, but he was offered an opportunity - a mission: to go to a new world and become strong enough to kill the hidden boss behind the final boss. Now in a new world he must research and study the system to take advantage of it, find his strengths; form alliances and find party members to become strong enough to face the end. This story does use Multiple perspectives and tells stories that add to the MC's. I've been given this feedback enough that I feel the need to mention that growth (levels, skills, classes, etc.) is slow, intentionally so, but constant. Credit for the cover goes to a commission for KemptBones from DeviantArt for the cover. This book is a rewrite of the original Embrace the Blade. The timeline for this one is completely separate and you do not need to read the original to understand what is going on. If you want to check out the original you can find it here (just a warning that they are NOT good): ETB Drafts 1&2 If you came here from the original EtB, WELCOME!!

Alex was dying, and all the millions his father had left him meant nothing. The life he had been so eager to embrace, to do the memory of his father proud, would soon come to an end. Cancer. That ugly, terrible word. He had tried to be strong for his mother, even when the treatments left him violently ill, his body wracked with pain, his friends and even his girlfriend leaving him almost as fast as his once impressive physique wasted to nothing under the ravages of his illness. And just when he thought all hope was dead, a couple discrete referals placed by high-powered friends of his family got him an exclusive spot at the most sophisticated cryonic facility in the world. He didn't know if there was such a thing as an afterlife, but part of the package included uploading a copy of his cortex into a digital universe filled countless worlds to explore, where he could embrace whatever class or profession he could dream of. All of which sounded hell of a lot better than the miserable death waiting for him in the real world. In the end, he signed the paperwork, putting his pathetic flickering life in the hands of potential quacks and charlatans. After all, with death just days away, what did he have to lose? Even if he could never be successfully revived, he could at least adventure his heart out. (Authors Note: Books 1-6 are now live on Amazon and here is a link if you wanted to check it out! Luck And Chronomancy
Time Magic is the best magic as everyone knows, although there are lots of unique Talents in the world. Most people only remember Haste because it is hard to get to higher Phases of Chronomancy. That is still enough to make the Talent iconic. A lucky enough Aleatory Talent can position you for greatness or leave you languishing in obscurity. The only true equality in the world is when that glowing message pops up at 8 years old. Even if it doesn't activate until you are an adult at 16 you still know. Sure you can find a new dungeon spawn and get another chance at a rare Talent, even this one, but you have to already be ready to delve into the *Far Wilds*, which is far easier with wealth or family power. This is the story of where my good fortune took me and the difference it made, even among a party of 7 others including an Arcanist. It is a journey of magic and monsters but also math, which some think is actually worse. Luckily I was born with Intelligence and Focus as my personal traits, and my parents were scholars. Of course Chronomancy can also be a frontline combat talent. Versitility well beyond other Elder Talents like Gravity, Abstraction, or Arcana. Might could have worked for me, too. I also met a runaway princess. All the best adventures have a princess. She hated being a noble and we didn't get married but it still counts. Besides she really filled out our front line. All that Leadership training came in handy. I still don't know where she's from. Who cares? How well Haste goes with giant hammers is what's important. I never learned much about anyone in the party, except the one I grew up with. I'm not a people person. I just wanted to optimize dungeon clearing time. *******Story Details******* No romance, politics, or traumatizing content, slice of life, or even dialogue. 1st person narration, like a guide/adventure log. 2000-7000 words a day, maybe 40-60% rpgish combat log with some reasoning on combat decisions, with the rest character Talent discussion and progression stuff. 8 person party with a decent variety in roles. Party members usually have 2 primary functions. Told from the support/control Chronomancer's perspective. Each party member will have 6 Basic/Background Traits, then 3 actual Talents with abilities. Capstone from their Educational Institution, Arbritrary as a gift from the temples, and Aleatory which is decided at birth, revealed at 8, and activated after adulthood at 16. Aleatory Traits ignore requirements and are random why is why they are so important. They'll gain new Talents from finding Dungeons to consume in the *Wilds*. Mature dungeons in cities can provide *Challenges* to raise the Phase of a Talent, up to 3 times from 1 to 4. Each character will get to roughly 8 non-Trait Talents. Attributes come exclusive from Talents, are required by Talents, and provide various effects as well. I designed about 220 Talents with abilities, 4 in each of 4 phases. "Traits" are just Attribute stuff. I'm not sure how many will be detailed in the story, more than 100 for sure. I used Talents because I want to be free of the legacy of tabletop. Half those rules are just because of the limitations inherent in a pre-computer ttrpg. This story mostly uses combat Talents, although like 1/3 of the 220 are for crafting and other society and economy stuff. If you really wanted to be a Thief you might take Intuition, Awarness, and Might for Basic Traits and Deftness, Manipulation, and Trickery for Family/Education. Then you'd pick Acrobatics, and Climbing for Educational Capstone and Arbitrary traits. You Aleatory Trait might be Shadow(Light/Dark) Magic, Umbramancy. A Bard might swap Dexterity for Charisma, Music for Acrobatics, and have gotten Illusion(Shadow/Sound(Air/Force)) for their Aleatory Trait.
